Speaker: Robert A. Mittelstaedt 1:45pm - 2:45pm Substance Abuse, Chemical Dependency, and Mental Health Concerns in the Legal Profession This session will focus on causes, effects, and solutions relating to substance abuse and mental health concerns in the legal profession. Speaker: Dr. Steven Berglas 2:55pm - 3:55pm Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My! Exploring Legal Bias Issues Through Film Explore the thorny issues of discrimination, harassment, and managing diversity through the eyes of some of Hollywood s finest television and motion picture writers and directors. We ll use the magic of motion pictures to examine legal, historical, and cultural aspects of bias in a stimulating new way, through the eyes of unforgettable characters ranging from Don Corleone to Darth Vader. Biographies Jonn R. Beeson advises and counsels a broad range of companies, from smaller private companies to large publicly traded corporations, on corporate and transactional matters, primarily negotiated mergers and acquisitions, takeovers, takeover preparedness, corporate finance, corporate governance, and general corporate counseling. His experience includes many complex cross-border matters. Thomas A. Briggs (Tom) focuses on commercial transactions where intellectual property, technology, information, and knowledge or other intangible assets are a significant factor. He has particular experience in licenses, joint development, strategic alliances, joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and settlement agreements. Tom is coleader of the Licensing & Technology Transactions Services of the Firm s IP Practice. Kevin B. Espinola counsels a wide spectrum of public and private companies in mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, general corporate counseling, and corporate finance matters. He has worked on a wide variety of acquisitions and dispositions, including public-company mergers, hostile takeovers, leveraged buyouts, asset divestitures, and asset acquisitions. His corporate counseling experience spans a broad range of industries, including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, gaming, hotels and hospitality, cruise lines, nutritional supplements, and real estate. Steven N. Geise (Steve) is a trial lawyer who focuses on defending companies in product liability lawsuits in state and federal courtrooms throughout the country. In that work, he has represented manufacturers of airplanes, cigarettes, elevators, off-road vehicles, pharmaceuticals, and other consumer goods in both individual and class-action litigation. In addition, Steve represents clients in general, commercial, and intellectual property litigation matters.

Biographies Shawn Harpen is a partner in the Firm s Securities and Shareholder Litigation & SEC Enforcement Practice who assists public and private companies, directors, and officers in complex commercial litigation, securities class and derivative actions, and proper corporate governance policies and procedures. Her practice involves both domestic and cross-border work. Shawn is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America and currently serves as vice chair of the State Bar of California s Standing Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct (COPRAC) and as cochair of the Orange County Bar Association s Professionalism and Ethics Committee. Allison R. Michael is a partner in the Labor & Employment Practice, representing corporations and executives in all aspects of labor and employment law. She was named one of the Top 50 Women Litigators in California by her peers and the Daily Journal and recently won $4.7 million for a client while defending a sexual harassment lawsuit. Robert A. Mittelstaedt (Bob) is a trial lawyer with more than 30 years experience in complex commercial cases, including antitrust, unfair business practice, international law claims under the Alien Tort Statute, and employment law. Bob has served as lead trial counsel or national coordinating counsel in state and federal antitrust matters for industries ranging from computer games and petroleum to high-speed internet access and online music stores. He has been responsible for the defense of nationwide class and parens patriae actions and for complex arbitration, grand jury, and other criminal matters. Most recently, Bob obtained a defense verdict in a five-week jury trial in a high-profile Alien Tort Statute case in San Francisco federal court that was recognized as the California Defense Verdict of 2008 by the Daily Journal and for which he received the California Lawyer Attorney of the Year award for litigation.

Biographies DR. STEVEN BERGLAS is an executive coach and management consultant who spent more than 30 years on the faculty of Harvard Medical School s Department of Psychiatry. From 1980 to 1985, he held a Career Scientist Development Award from the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration for his work on success-induced alcohol abuse, which was based on the self-handicapping theory that he formulated. Dr. Berglas s self-handicapping theory has stimulated over 500 journal articles.
