Interesting facts that we have found out: A turtle can extend it s neck to catch its prey When an octopus feels endangered it squirts out black ink Sharks do not have bones their bodies are made from cartilage An octopus can grow its tentacles back Questions that we would like to find out: Why does an octopus have suckers? How does the ocean create waves that travel onto the sand? What causes the waves to grow bigger? How do starfish swim? How does a daddy seahorse carry its babies? How does a pufferfish puff? How much plastic is in our oceans?

Dialogue from Year 1 Assembly Wednesday 23 rd January 2019 Laila: Welcome Asmara: We created under the sea pictures on our Topic launch day Omer: We ve been reading Can you Catch a mermaid? Mohned: Did you know that sometimes a mermaid s tail can turn into legs? Lamar: But she needs to keep something from her ocean home to return to the water. Yafet: This is the story of Eliza who really saw a mermaid Ali D: Eliza lived with her father Tom who was a fisherman Hussain -Tom You are my little dolphin Osama: Everyday Eliza waved goodbye to her father in his fishing boat Hussain: What shall I bring you for tea? Emma: Can you catch a mermaid? Zainab: One evening Eliza saw a little girl playing on the beach Aaron: The little girl gave Eliza a shell when she put it her ear it sang Hana: Can I be your friend? Come and play with me. Samuel: The girls played with each other all day as if they d known each other all their lives

Aasayiah: Her name was Freya and she had long greeny gold hair and pale skin. Her eyes were the colour of stormy seas and all about her was the scent of salt and rock pools. Around her neck she carried a beautiful little mirror, inlaid with pieces of coral and mother of pearl. Daniel: Eliza didn t know where Freya came from or where she went to at night Rumaisa: Then one day something terrible happened Hana Freya: I ve lost my mirror it s gone it s gone Isaac: Tom had told Eliza all about mermaids. Freya was a mermaid. And the mirror was her special thing. They searched for the mirror all day. But they couldn t find the mirror. That night, Freya went home with Eliza. Freya s Mother: Where s my daughter? Hamoudi; Saley, Leo: Freya is stranded! She has lost her mirror! Ali S: Eliza had a secret. She had Freya s mirror. She hid it in her secret box. She didn t want Freya to ever leave. I ll give it to Freya tomorrow I thought. But she never did. And the days passed and Eliza kept the mirror. Elizabeth: Freya grew thinner and thinner looking for her mirror. And the sea started to become stormy and dangerous. Sophia: The fishermen did not catch any fish in the stormy seas Danika: One night, Eliza heard Freya saying let me go home, let me go home - Eliza knew what she must do. She tucked the mirror gently into Freya s hand. Then she climbed back into bed and fell asleep.

Talia: In the morning the seas were calm. Freya was gone. Tom set sail on a calm sea. Hussain: What shall I bring you today my little dolphin? Talia: Eliza smiled a sad little smile. Osama & Kya: That day Eliza made new friends. And she could hear Freya s sweet voice singing in the ocean. Sometimes when Eliza looked into the sea she could see Freya smiling up at her through the water. Aydin: Thank you Elizabeth: Next time you re on the beach watch out for a mermaid! - The end -
