Quilt Along Mug Block Rotary Cut, Pieced Block Finished size 12 square, Unfinished size 12 ½ square Overview This block features rotary cut pieces and stitch and flip corners. The text can be computer printed or embroidered. Requirements Tools: Sewing machine, rotary cutter, cutting mat, scissors, ruler, water-soluble marker or pencil, and iron. An ink jet printer can print the text on fabric, or embroidery floss may be used. Pattern Notes: Use a ¼ seam allowance, sewing right sides together. Press as indicated.
2 Fabrics: Fabric A: Beige Text Fabric B: Turquoise Text Border Fabric C: Orange Background Fabric D: Light Purple Mug Handle Cut (1) 5 ½ x 6 ½ rectangle For Computer Printing: Print the text on the fabric and then cut it to size. Cut (2) 1 ½ x 6 ½ strips Cut (2) 1 ½ x 7 ½ strips Cut (1) 2 ½ x 12 ½ strip Cut (1) 2 x 8 ½ strip Cut (2) 2 ½ x 4 rectangles Cut (1) 2 x 2 ½ rectangle Cut (1) 1 ½ x 4 ½ strip Cut (2) 1 ½ x 1 ½ squares Cut (1) 1 ½ x 2 ½ strip Cut (2) 1 ½ x 3 strips Fabric E: Dark Purple Table Cut (1) 2 ½ x 12 ½ strip Safety Note: Care needs to be used when cutting with a rotary cutter. Blades are sharp. Only cut fabric with rulers that are designed to be used with rotary cutters. Assembly Computer Printing the Text: 1. Using the actual size text printed on page 6, print the text on a fabric sheet made for ink jet printers. Please use the manufacturer s directions, including how to make the printing color-fast. Be sure to set your printer on 100% scale or Actual Size. 2. Using a rotary ruler and rotary cutter, cut the printed fabric to a 5 ½ x 6 ½ rectangle (Fabric A). Be sure that the text is centered and that the 6 ½ length is vertical as shown in the illustration.
3 Note: If you prefer, the text can be hand embroidered after the block is pieced. Simply trace the text on the rectangle and embroider it with your favorite stitch, using 3 strands of embroidery floss. Adding the Borders to the Text Rectangle: 1. Sew turquoise Fabric B 1 ½ x 6 ½ strips to each side of the text rectangle. Press away from the center. 2. Sew one turquoise Fabric B 1 ½ x 7 ½ strip to the top of the text rectangle. Press away from the center. 3. Add the orange Fabric C background triangles to the bottom border strip using the stitch and flip method: First draw a diagonal line on wrong side of each orange Fabric C 1 ½ square. Align the squares as shown, right sides together and sew along the marked line. Trim the seam to ¼ and press away from the strip. 4. Sew the completed strip to the bottom of the text rectangle and press away from the center. Adding the Mug Handle: 1. Sew one light purple Fabric D 1 ½ x 2 ½ strip to one orange Fabric C 2 x 2 ½ strip. Press toward the mug handle. 2. Sew one light purple Fabric D 1 ½ x 3 strip to the top of the mug handle and one to the bottom of the handle as shown. Press toward the mug handle.
4 3. Sew one orange Fabric C 1 ½ x 4 ½ strip to the mug handle as shown. Press away from the mug handle. 4. Sew one orange Fabric C 2 ½ x 4 strip to the top of the mug handle and one to the bottom of the mug handle. Press away from the mug handle. Complete the Block: 1. Sew the mug handle to the right-hand side of the mug. Press away from the mug handle. 2. Sew the orange Fabric C 2 x 8 ½ strip to the left-hand side of the mug. Press away from the mug. 3. Sew the orange Fabric C 2 ½ x 12 ½ strip to the top of the block and the dark purple Fabric E 2 ½ x 12 ½ strip to the bottom of the mug. Press away from the mug.
