Instrument Level Instructor Description Mountain Dulcimer B Joellen Lapidus Just the Basics. Learn how to tune your dulcimer and change your strings. We ll learn to read dulcimer tablature, play 3 different strums, chords, fingerpicking or flatpicking and play in 3 different tunings. We ll cover all the basics you need to start your dulcimer journey! Mountain Dulcimer B/I Jessica Comeau Ancient & Medieval Hymns. Many traditional hymns of faith have roots that go back to earlier centuries AD, either through their melodies or lyrics. You will be introduced to songs that connect with ancient prayers and melodies. Mountain Dulcimer B/I Janita Baker Learning Songs By Ear. This skill does not require any special gift, anyone can learn to do it! This is the way traditional music has always been shared and preserved. Working with familiar and easy songs we ll explore simple ways to figure out the melody line and then add the chords. This will help improve your musical ear, your ability to memorize tunes, and to hear chords and chord changes. Bring blank paper or tab paper for taking notes. DAD tuning. We ll learn pieces from Bach, Beethoven, and Praetorius. This class includes various techniques for phrasing, interpretation, playing melodies across the strings and a few with two parts. DAD Banjammer Bowed Dulcimer - 2 Mountain Dulcimer & Hammered Dulcimer Together B/I & Up B/I & Up B/I & Up Aaron O'Rourke The simplicity of the dulcimer fret-board meets the tone of a banjo! We ll explore how you can get the most out of this unique instrument whether you re adding a new voice to a dulcimer jam or playing it solo in your living room. 3 and 4-string banjammers welcome! Ken Bloom This is a continuation of Bowed Dulcimer - 1 along with more interesting bowing and fingering challenges. The goals will be advancing your bowed dulcimer technique in this fun class! Erin Mae / Steve Eulberg Can these dulcimers play well together? You bet! Erin and Steve perform as a duo and have played in a trio that weaves the different timbres and techniques of both instruments into tasty tunes. You don t need a playing partner to be in this class, either instrument is welcome. We ll put it all together for an amazing sound! Hammered Dulcimer B Karen Ashbrook Getting to Know Your Hammered Dulcimer. We ll learn fun repertoire that teaches ear training, good hammering skills and intervals.

Hammered Dulcimer B/I Martha Richard A Tune A Day! We ll learn a new tune every day geared for beginning players. All new songs for you in 2019 KMW. Hammered Dulcimer B/I Ken Kolodner Chord Mapping: Finding and Applying Chords & Arpeggios. Much like guitar players, we can use a multitude of shapes and basic chord theory to play most of the chords (including inversions) you will ever need. Using a few simple tunes we will explore concepts such as harmonizing a scale and the many patterns that hold the keys to arranging. (Written music will be provided but please bring a recording device such as a smart phone. Hammered Dulcimer B/I-I Ruth Smith Gaining Confidence. This class will help fill in the gaps and tackle any concerns you have. Nothing is too basic or too dumb to ask. We ll work on mastering basic skills along with important techniques while learning new tunes. Hammered Dulcimer I Matt Dickerson How to Write Original Music. Learn to reach within your own creativity to produce quality musical tunes on the hammered dulcimer. Each class member will compose their own tune by the end of the week. Though this class is for HD players, musicians of other instruments are welcome as well. Hammered Dulcimer I - A Rick Thum Droning Gone Wild. Droning is not just adding one note. It can be simple or complicated. It is one technique that will affect everything you play and make it interesting and exquisite. Lots of hands on playing. Hammered Dulcimer I/A-A Mark Alan Wade Melodic Embellishments. Learn tried and true ways to dress up your melodies to make them new again. We ll cover methods that work great on both slow and fast tunes. Bonus! Some of these tricks help you cover mistakes by working with them to sound intentional! Ukulele B/I Rick Quisol In beginning/intermediate ukulele you will learn more advanced chords and strum patterns. Basic theory, chord transposition, fingerpicking and tablature will be introduced. Lots of tunes and playing. Ukulele I Danny Shepherd Carter Family Songs for Ukulele. Play songs made famous by the original Carter Family. Learn to play the Mother Maybelle Carter scratch fingerpicking style. You will also learn to read and play melody using tablature.

Vocal All Trish Ross Psalms, Hymns, & Spiritual Songs. We ll look at how the church music of the past informs how music informs the music we enjoy today. Explore creative ways to sing and make songs of the past your own by adding simple instrumentation and more! Guitar B David Brooks Beginning Guitar! We ll learn to play chords in the keys of D and A and develop solid right-hand rhythm techniques to play in jams and to accompany your singing. Emphasis will be on learning to hear the chord changes. Guitar B/I-I Paul Oorts A Tuning A Day For Guitar. Tired of the same old basic guitar chords? Here s something to challenge you and open new horizons: explore a new tuning each day from Drop-D tuning, to DADGAD, to open G tuning, and more. For guitarists who have solid roots in Standard tuning. Fiddle B Tom Cunningham This class is for folks that have no experience playing the fiddle. We ll learn how to hold the bow and the fiddle, then learn a few simple tunes to play as well as beginning techniques. Fiddle I/A Karen Jones Learn slightly more difficult old time and Irish fiddle tunes like Hangman s Reel, Temperance Reel and a few jigs, and learn a jazz/swing/blues standard or two with easy improvisation (the blues scale will be emphasized for improvisation). (Note and tab transcriptions provided.) Banjo B/I Steve Smith Clawhammer Banjo for Accompanying Singing. Learn some great mountain folk songs played and sung in the old timey way. This class will teach and play various tunes in the most used clawhammer tunings, including Double C/D and Standard G/A. Banjo I Jon Pickow Intermediate Old Time Banjo. This class is for those who have mastered the basic frailing strum pattern. We will focus on tunes that introduce drop thumbing and various tunings. We ll also look at accompaniment techniques. Mandolin B David Wilson This class is for those just learning to play. You will learn about the instrument, basic chords, how to use the pick, strumming and rhythm, tuning, and how to play simple tunes everyone knows.

Mandolin B/I Jim Miller Carter Family Tunes for Mandolin. You ll learn several familiar and not so familiar tunes recorded by the Carter Family that are in the public domain. Some of the finest old time music to add to your repertoire! We ll cover picking, rhythm, and more! All different material from previous years. Upright Acoustic Bass B/I Eric Jarboe Walking the Upright Acoustic Bass. The principles of walking bass will be explained and applied. Principles can be applied to other bass instruments as well. Autoharp B+ - B/I Mary Jo Ward Beginner Melody Picking. It s not as hard as you think! You need to have taken at least one absolute beginner class. We ll unlock the secrets to picking out melodies on your Autoharp. Bowed Psaltery I - I/A Tish Westman Harmonies & Dynamics. You will learn to create your own harmonies by using a bit of theory, and we ll learn how and where to put in or take out notes for the effects you want in your arrangement. Folk Harp B/I DeeDee Tibbits How do I get better? Let s discover some lovely tunes that will help us play with others, and improve our technique. We ll also learn how to arrange our tunes more creatively. Penny Whistle B/I-I Carrie Pasma Whistle Harmony. You ll learn to find harmonies on your whistle plus cover enough theory to understand and apply harmony, even on the spot! We will write melodies, practice playing by ear, and learn some tunes of your choice, time permitting. We ll discuss options based on the key, limitations with a D whistle, and additional keys you may later acquire. Penny Whistle I/A Cathy Wilde Irish It Up Already playing tinwhistle but wonder how to sound more Irish? We ll learn a few tunes and then how to dress them up with cuts, rolls, triplets, and staccato/legato articulation in addition to phrasing and variations. Bring a D tinwhistle, recording device and a tune you like, and we ll explore ways to Irish It Up a bit! Notation provided for class tunes. Native American Style Flute B/I-I Marsha Harris Exploring Extended Scales. This class will begin to explore other music within your flute. There are a variety of extended scales that will add interest in your music, playing those notes that you usually don t try to play. Lots of tips to increase your skill level.

Ensemble - Social Orchestra I & Up Bryan Thomas We ll be taking some familiar tunes and turn them into grooving arrangements with some room for improvisation! All instruments are welcome to join this fun opportunity to play together in a group. Folk Dancing All Elwood Donnelly Folk Dancing for Everyone!
