He attended Clemson University on scholarship until his sophomore year, when he left to join the U.S. Army. Dorsey started basic training in February 1944 at Camp Blanding, Florida, then received additional communications training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Dorsey's unit, the 71st Infantry Division, arrived in France in February 1945. The division fought in France, Germany, and Austria, and on May 4, participated in the liberation of Gunskirchen Lager, a German concentration camp near Lambach, Austria. Photographs and negatives taken by the unit's photographer, Joe Daurer, were given to Dorsey by Daurer's widow Rosemary after his death. After the war, Dorsey resumed his studies in textile engineering at Clemson University. He worked for companies in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Hazlehurst, Georgia, then returned to Charlotte and started his own company, Lubromation, Inc. Mickey Dorsey papers Page 3

Collection Overview The collection consists of letters, photographs, negatives, and other papers of Mickey Dorsey, an American soldier with the 71st Infantry Division, who participated in the liberation of Gunskirchen Lager, a German concentration camp in Austria. Photographs and negatives taken by Joe Daurer, the photographer for Dorsey's unit, show victims and survivors in the camp. Also contains a photocopy of Surviving the Holocaust, a memoir written by Judita Hruza, who was imprisoned in Gunskirchen. Wartime negatives given to Dorsey by Rosemary Daurer, widow of Joe Daurer, the photographer for Dorsey's unit. Included are images of soldiers, civilians, street scenes, war damage, and Gunskirchen concentration camp.
