Tapestry Weaving in Santa Fe November 6 13, 2019 A Hands-On Tapestry Weaving Workshop and Cultural Immersion

Uncommon Textile Journeys that Change Lives Meet Our Instructors Cari Sample Malver is an award-winning weaver trained in the Rio Grande tradition of weaving unique to the Southwest. This style of the art was brought to Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado by the Spanish settlers in the 16th century and is a result of the interweaving of the Spanish, Mexican native and local Indian pueblo weaving cultures. Cari is passionate about weaving and exposing others to the many forms of fiber art around the world. Cari founded Loom Dancer Odysseys and has been a specialty tour company owner since 1992. She weaves on a variety of different looms and in many countries. In addition to leading Loom Dancer s textile expeditions, she loves to teach weaving classes. When not exploring the world, Cari splits her time between Telluride, Colorado and Santa Fe, New Mexico where the natural landscapes and cultures are her muse. First Light Over Georgia s Mountain Handwoven Tapestry by Cari Sample Malver Ginger Snip Doggone Good Weaving Handwoven Tapestry by Ginger Snip Born in Germany and raised in Texas, Ginger learned to sew and knit as a child. In addition to being an award-winning weaver, Ginger is an Assistant Guide for Loom Dancer Odysseys. She is a grandmother of 2, a mother of 3 and lives in Telluride, Colorado with her husband, dog and 4 horses. She weaves on Rio Grande, Mirrix, and SAORI looms at home and loves to travel and interact with fiber enthusiasts everywhere. Tapestry Weaving in Santa Fe A Unique Fiber Getaway in the Legendary Artist Mecca of the Southwest Wednesday, November 6 Arrive Santa Fe, New Mexico Today you travel from your home to Santa Fe, New Mexico. We will be happy to make recommendations for your travel arrangements. Travel options include flights directly into Santa Fe or Albuquerque. Upon arrival, you will transfer on your own to the charming Inn on the Alameda. Nestled in the heart of Santa Fe, between the historic Plaza and the artfilled galleries of Canyon Road, the Inn on the Alameda offers quintessential Santa Fe hospitality. This evening, we will gather for a welcome reception. Dinner is on your own so that you can experience one of Santa Fe s marvelous restaurants. Overnight at Inn on the Alameda. (Welcome reception)

Thursday Friday, November 7-8 Tapestry Weaving Workshop We will begin the first two days of our workshop learning various weaving techniques including curves, geometric designs and landscapes creating various shapes and color blending. Learning these techniques enables the weaver to create many styles of tapestry including pictorials, abstract or traditional design. You will come away with a completed tapestry, not just a sampler. This very personalized class is suitable for all levels of weaving experience, even beginners. Overnight at Inn on the Alameda. (B and Happy Hour daily)

Saturday, November 9 Full Day Tour of Northern Chimayo and Surroundings Today we have the entire day to explore some of Northern New Mexico s iconic sites. We ll begin with a visit to the Historic Nambe Trading Post for an introduction to one of the last historic trading posts of the Real West and showcasing the New Spirit of Old Santa Fe. Everything is made by hand by local artists and craftsmen from the surrounding pueblos and communities. Next, we visit the famous weavers of Chimayo. The town of Chimayo was founded near the end of the 17 th century by Spanish settlers who became proficient at farming, raising stock and wool weaving. Their descendants are still experts in many of these traditions. Ortega s Weaving is a family of ninth generation weavers offering traditional textile creations. Nearby, Centinela Weavers is a tapestry gallery specializing in in hand woven tapestry wool products using natural dyes, custom-dyed yarns, handspun yarns, and the traditional Chimayo and Rio Grande weaving styles. The gallery is run by Irvin and Lisa Trujillo, both award winner weavers. Their work has been shown in many museums worldwide including the Smithsonian. Here we learn more first hand from Irvin about the entire Rio Grande weaving process which is closely linked to the history of New Mexico and is indigenous to this area. Photos of beautiful weavings from Centinela Weavers

Chimayo is also renowned for its traditional Tewa Indian and Hispanic arts. These include wood carving, retablos, tin working, pottery, red and green chilis and colcha embroidery. We take a break for lunch at an iconic restaurant that has been serving authentic cuisine of New Mexico since 1965. Filled up with the delicious flavors of New Mexico, we journey to the nearby Santuario de Chimayó which is believed to be the home of a miracle over 200 years ago. Built in 1816, the site is the destination for thousands of pilgrims and travelers every year to be healed by its famous soil. Lastly, we travel on the spectacularly scenic High Road to Taos with vistas in every direction. Our destination is La Chiripada Winery located in the charming Embudo Valley. They have been creating award-winning wines for over 35 years and is New Mexico s oldest winery. The vineyard was established in 1977, following the traditions of the first Spanish settlers. The name La Chiripada (meaning a stroke of luck ) was adopted from the original ranch where the winery is located. Here we will have the opportunity to taste some of their twenty varieties of wines before heading back to Santa Fe filled with memories of an extraordinary day. Overnight at Inn on the Alameda. (B)

Sunday, November 10 Free Day to Explore Santa Fe Today the day is entirely at your leisure to discover the many wonders of Santa Fe at your own pace. Armed with your complimentary Cultural Pass for free entrances, you may wish to visit some of the many museums including the International Folk Art Museum, The Indian Museum, the Georgia O Keefe Museum and others. The shopping in Santa Fe is legendary and the many galleries feature world class art. Don t miss the Native American artists that show their creations in front of the Governor s Palace. They travel from miles around and are allotted space each day based on a lottery system. Today s options are seemingly endless! We recommend having lunch at one of the iconic restaurants to break up the day. The offerings range from traditional local s favorites to five-star dining experiences. Overnight at Inn on the Alameda. (B, Happy Hour)

Monday Tuesday, November 10 11 Tapestry Weaving Workshop We continue our weaving workshop for these two days completing our amazing creations. It is always such a pleasure to see where the various forms of inspiration take each weaver! Where will yours lead you? At the end of the workshop, we may all choose to have a farewell dinner together and celebrate our week of adventure in the Southwest (not included). Overnight at Inn on the Alameda. (B, Happy Hour)
