In this issue: Editor s Notes From the President Open Photo Comp statistics Open Photo Comp - September Menangle Park Show 2015 Open Photo Competition - October Club Calendar Weblinks Editor s Notes Welcome to the October edition of Macarthur Photographic Society s newsletter. I hope you re all enjoying the beautiful spring weather. As you will see on page 4, members of the Macarthur Photographic Society almost did a clean sweep of the photography competition held the Tabcorp Menangle Park Show last month. Our members scooped the pools and took out first and second prizes as well as a slew of Highly Commended awards - congratulations to you all! Locally, Mount Annan Botanical Gardens currently have a beautiful display of their increasingly popular paper daisies. It s amazing floral photography give it a go. how many different angles you can shoot flowers from and the image at left won me an (online) award, so if you re interested in From the President s Desk Greetings all - Lately I ve been speaking about the merchandise that MPS organised, with shirts, jackets and caps embroidered with the MPS logo, and the order has arrived. If you placed an order please see me or Heather in the break to receive your order, and see our Treasurer, Doug, for payment and he will issue a receipt. I think they look great! In other news, our Social Secretary Jen Delaporte is organising a day outing to Pioneer Village at Wilberforce. We don t have a date yet as Jen needs to determine the level of interest first, so if you feel like a day out with your camera and friends from MPS, please see Jen at the meeting or respond to her post on our Facebook page. We are still in the planning stages of the Tasmania trip but it s a definite go-ahead for April 2016. It will be around 2 weeks duration and we ll cover many of the prime photographic hotspots around Tasmania, so pencil in some tentative dates for April. We ll continue to update you as we move along. I look forward to seeing you all at our Wednesday Open Photo comp. Regards, That s all from me this month enjoy your meeting. For September, we had 32 members entering a total of 134 images, 24 Distinctions & 37 Credits were awarded as follows: Colour Prints 48 Images 7 Distinctions 10 Credits Monochrome Prints 27 Images 4 Distinctions 7 Credits Projected Images 23 Images 7 Distinctions 10 Credits Projected Images - Blue 25 Images 6 Distinctions 10 Credits Image of the Month - Sam Semaan s Projected Image - Tamar River Blues (see next page for Sam s story) Page 2 October 2015

September Open Photo Competition The MPS Image of the Month as awarded by our September guest judge David Johnson, is Sam Semaan s image from our Blue category entitled Tamar River Blues. Sam took this shot on a recent Tasmanian holiday which culminated in a cruise on the Tamar River in Launceston. Sam said I found that the Tamar is no Hawksbury for scenery so I turned my lens to the gentle wake of our boat and snapped several shots of the rolling undulations that we were leaving behind us. This shot appealed to me the most for its depiction of the peacefulness of the Tamar River and for its blueness. The image was taken with a Canon EOS 60D, Tamron 18-270mm lens at a focal length of 200mm. Manual exposure at 1/100s, f/9.0 and ISO 200. Using the basic software that came with the camera, the image was cropped, slight adjustments made of the brightness, contrast and saturation, and the image was sharpened a little. Well done Sam on winning this month s Image of the Month. Page 3 October 2015

Menangle Park Show 2015 Photography Competition In September some MPS members entered the photography competition at the Menangle Park Show - this is a first for Menangle Park and we hope it s the first of many. The display in the Pavilion was something to behold - beautiful images beautifully displayed. It s heartening to see that local talent is being showcased in this way. The judge was Luke Fuda, who is a freelance photographer involved in a wide array of photography genres, who has won many awards in sports photography and reportage. The following table sets out MPS member placements at the Menangle Park Show. Well done to everyone! Judge for the October 2015 Open Photo Competition The judge for the October Open Photo Competition is Jim Crew. Jim has judged for MPS several times previously and he is a founding member of the Lane Cove Camera Club, as well as its President for 11 years. Jim was awarded the State Service to Photography (an award provided by the Australian Photographic Society), and has been involved in the running of the Sydney International Exhibition of Photography.
