DECEMBER 2016 In this issue: A Word from the President - pg. 1 Artwork of the Month pg. 1 & 2 Demo Programs list pg. 1 News from AAA pg. 2 Member News pg. 2 Pictures Page 3, 4 Venue listings pg. 5 Treasurer s Report pg.5 Raffle Winners - pg.2 A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT We presented Mayor Giles with four pieces of art, which he promised would hang in his office, during the lunch with the veterans on November 10th at Red Mountain Multi- Generational Center. ARTWORK OF THE MONTH An oil by Anthony Billings I started painting when I was in medical school in 1962. I had asked this girl on a date and we were supposed to meet in a department store. She stood me up and I wandered into the art department to kill some time. I thought that I would like to paint so I bought some oil paints and went back to my fraternity house and painted a portrait of her. The rest is history. I really enjoy painting and now that I am retired, I paint almost every day. I find that figure painting challenges me the most although I do other subject matter when the spirit moves me. I am basically self-taught by copying the artists I admire. I always tease that my art education hangs on the walls of my studio. I enjoy painting beautiful subjects. I think that one of the most important components of a painting is the subject matter. It should be beautiful and make the observer feel good. I do not paint gross subject matter. Don't forget to bring your ATC cards (artists trading cards) to the December meeting. It should be fun to see what everyone has done. Best wishes for the holidays and hope for a happy and prosperous new year. Thank you for all you do. Keep on creating, Loralee UPCOMING IMPORTANT DATES: MAL Board Meeting Wednesday, Dec 02 MAL Meeting - Tuesday, Dec 13 DEMOS: No demo for Dec ATC card exchange and voting for Artwork of the Year Con t pg 2 1

Con t from pg 1 I have tried to develop skill in the technical craft of oil painting in order to achieve some element of skill in depicting realistic subject matter. I would describe my style as realistic impressionism. The subject is real and the technique is impressionistic. I served in the US Air Force as a medical officer during the Viet Nam War in Tripoli, Libya. I moved to Texas and did a residency in Neurological Surgery at the Baylor Medical Center in Houston, Texas. I began a Neurosurgery practice in Tulsa, OK where I practiced for 35 years. I retired to Phoenix where I was raised and moved to Mesa 1n 2005. Anthony C. Billings REMEMBER TO BRING - Bring in photos of events you have participated in for the history books.
