MATT-FINISH GLASSES 3.2 300 MATT-FINISH GLASSES Introduction Matt-finish glasses fit the current trend towards minimalism, pure forms and simplicity. AGC uses several techniques to create a matt finish: > Painting (see Matelac) > Acid-etching (see Matelux, Matelac) > Sandblasting (see Planibel, Imagin) > Safety laminating with matt PVB (see Stratobel White). The particular technique used will depend on the type of application and on the degree of translucence and level of safety required. A matt-finish is also often chosen to filter light softly and to provide a degree of privacy. Depending on the technique used, the level of light transmission of a translucent glass can also be higher than that of clear glass. RANGE Use the following table to determine your choice of look, level of light transmission and possible applications. PVB acoustic laminating PVB laminating transmission (1) Int. Ext. PAINTED GLASSES 3.3 PAINTED GLASSES Introduction Lacobel and Matelac are two brands of opaque float glass designed for interior use only. The opaque appearance is achieved by applying a high-quality paint to the back of the glass. Lacobel and Matelac have different looks: LACOBEL Painted glasses PAINTED GLASSES 3.3 > Lacobel: reflective and shiny (paint + float glass) > Matelac: satin matt finish (paint + acid-etched float glass). Both types of glass are used in a wide variety of furniture applications and as wall cladding. They should not be used outdoors. Both glasses can have a SAFE or SAFE+ safety backing applied on request. Lacobel DESCRIPTION > Planibel float glass coated on one side with a high-quality paint > Opaque, bright appearance > Durable solution (paint protected by the glass) > 25 standard colours > Customised colours on request from 200 m² (see MyColour by Lacobel pg 318) 312 Matelac Red Dark 3004 furniture doors > Available in SAFE and SAFE + version: this is a polypropylene film applied to the back of the glass to ensure safety > Available with antibacterial process > For interior use only: wall covering, wardrobe doors and furniture. BENEFITS > Durable appearance: to protect it against damage, the back of the glass with the layer of paint is always positioned against the surface to be covered. Positioning it in this way also preserves the colour and appearance of the glass 313

PAINTED GLASSES 3.3 LACOBEL Heat resistance Moisture resistance UV resistance Stress resistance Lacobel paints can withstand temperatures up to 80 C. Special note for splashbacks: n-tempered glass can break if there is a temperature difference of 30 C or more on the same sheet of glass. For instance, a hot cooking vessel that touches the glass could cause it to break. If the hob is positioned near the splashback, the best and safest way to avoid thermal breakage is to position another piece of material right behind the hob up to the same height as the cooking vessels (approximately 10 to 15 cm), so as to prevent the cooking vessels from touching the Lacobel splashback. This additional piece is often made of the same material used for the worktop. Another possible solution is to place a small piece of transparent tempered glass in front of the Lacobel. - All Lacobel colours can be used in humid environments (bathrooms and kitchens) but should never be immersed in water - The metallic colours (Metal Grey, Metal Blue, Metal Taupe, Rich Copper, Rich Aluminium and Rich Gold) require a SAFE or SAFE+ film to be applied in such locations - Lacobel should be protected from any water leaking in behind the glass (silicone should be used for seals). The colours are fixed during the manufacturing process (no discolouration) USES Single glazing Insulating glazing APPLICATIONS Interior Exterior see applications LACOBEL - Furniture: partitions, tables, shelves, fixed and sliding doors for cupboards and wardrobes, display cases and glass bases - Wall coverings Lacobel cannot be used in façade double glazing, even if the painted side faces inwards (risk of thermal shock) STANDARD THICKNESSES (mm) 4 and 6 mm. Other Lacobel thicknesses and colours: depending on minimum quantities. PAINTED GLASSES 3.3 316 BONDING/SETTING AGC recommends the following fixing methods: > Bonding: tile-adhesive: Lacobel silicone: Lacobel and Lacobel SAFE / SAFE+ adhesive tape: Lacobel and Lacobel SAFE / SAFE+. > Mechanical: framing metal clips screws fixed directly into the glass. Please refer to the cutting and installation guides available at www. yourglass.com Lacobel. 317

SAFE and SAFE + Safety backing for Lacobel and Matelac DESCRIPTION SAFE is a polypropylene film applied to the painted side of the glass and has a dual function: > if the glass breaks, the splinters adhere to the film thereby preventing injury and damage > the film protects the paint from scratches. SAFE exists in two versions: SAFE and SAFE+. > SAFE This film is available from AGC in cut sizes only. The glass can be bonded with silicone as long as a primer is applied beforehand on the film side. > SAFE+ The new SAFE+ film is designed for use with DLF glass formats. It offers several advantages compared with the traditional SAFE film: no overlap of the polypropylene film: the SAFE+ film is applied to the entire sheet making the cutting process easier (special cutting recommendations available from your local agent) bonds more easily: glass with a SAFE+ film can be bonded with silicone (a primer is not always required). SAFETY LEVELS When impacted on the glass side, the SAFE or SAFE+ film complies with the requirements set out in standard EN 12600. The tests performed by an independent institute in respect of standard EN 12600 clearly demonstrate that as from a thickness of 3 mm, Lacobel and Matelac glasses featuring SAFE or SAFE+ have a breakage pattern similar to a laminated glass (type B). As such, Lacobel/Matelac SAFE / SAFE+ can now be used in broad glass walls. PAINTED GLASSES 3.3 325

MIRRORS 3.4 MIROLD MORENA BONDING/SETTING AGC recommends two methods: > Bonding: Silicone Adhesive tape. > Mechanical fixing: Rebate Metal clips. Please refer to the cutting and installation guides available at Mirox. SAFE and SAFE + Safety backing for Mirox MNGE, Mirox 3G Lacobel, Matelac and Mirold Morena DESCRIPTION SAFE is a polypropylene film applied to the silvered side of the glass and has a dual function: > if the glass breaks, the splinters adhere to the film thereby preventing injury and damage > the film protects the varnish or silvered side from scratches. SAFE exists in two versions: SAFE and SAFE+. > SAFE This film is available from AGC in cut sizes only. The glass can be bonded with silicone as long as a primer is applied to the back of the film beforehand on the film side. MIRRORS 3.4 USES Single glazing Insulating glazing > SAFE+ The new SAFE+ film is designed for use with DLF glass formats. It offers several advantages compared with the traditional SAFE film: APPLICATIONS Interior Exterior - Furniture: partitions, tables, shelves, fixed and sliding doors for cupboards and wardrobes, display cases and glass bases - Wall cladding no overlap of the polypropylene film: the SAFE+ film is applied to the entire sheet making the cutting process easier (special cutting recommendations available from your local agent) bonds more easily: glass with a SAFE+ film can be bonded with silicone (a primer is not always required). 338 STANDARD THICKNESSES (mm) 4 and 6 mm. SAFETY LEVELS When impacted on the glass side, the SAFE or SAFE+ film complies with the requirements of standard EN 12600. 339

MIRRORS 3.4 SAFE and SAFE + The tests performed by an independent institute in respect of standard EN 12600 clearly demonstrate that as from a thickness of 3 mm, the SAFE and SAFE+ versions of Mirox and Mirold have a breakage pattern similar to a laminated glass. As such, Mirox SAFE/SAFE+ can now be used in broad glass walls.
