Hermione Granger Style Bag Finished size: 6 x 6 x 6 Read all of the instructions before you begin. All Rights Reserved Page 1

Materials: 11 x 14 (28 x 35 cm) of four different purple fabrics (I used velvet, satin and cotton) for the outside 4 (10 cm) square of cotton fabric for centre circle 4 (10 cm) square of medium weight interfacing for centre circle 20 (50 cm) square of cotton fabric for the lining 2 ½ wide strips of cotton fabric measuring 55 (135 cm) when joined together for the strap ½ wide strips of batting measuring 55 (135 cm) when joined together for the strap 20 (50 cm) square of fleece/batting 40 (1m) of braided trim Small black seed beads 2 ¾ yd. (2.5 m) thin black cord for drawstring 2 wooden black beads for the ends of the drawstrings Card board/template plastic for templates Sewing machine and general sewing supplies All seam allowances are ¼ (6mm) unless otherwise stated. Do not iron directly on satin and velvet, use an iron cloth and low heat. Make a template from the pattern provided in a separate PDF file or see instructions on how to make your own template at the end of this tutorial. All Rights Reserved Page 2

Cut out 2 pieces from each of the purple fabrics using the wedge template (A). Use the template to draw a circle divided in to eight wedges on the 20 square/circle of fleece. Place two purple wedges right sides together on the fleece using the marked wedges as a guide. Place the tip so the seam line tip matches the centre on the fleece. Stitch one side and open up the pieces and finger press the seam. Place the next wedge right sides together with one of the wedges and stitch the raw edges together. Open up the wedges and finger press the seam. Continue the same way around the circle with all the eight wedges. On the last seam fold ¼ on the raw edge and place on top on the first wedge. Topstitch in place. Decorate the seams between the wedges with trim, lace, embroidery and/or beads as desired. This bag has a braided ribbon on four seams and a crazy quilt like machine embroidery stitch on the other four. The embroidery has small black seed beads hand stitched evenly along the seams. All Rights Reserved Page 3

The centre of the circle will be covered in the next step. To avoid bulk and needle breakage it is not necessary to sew lace and ribbon on the centre. Use template B or a round object like a cup that s about 3 in diameter to trace a circle on the medium weight interfacing. Cut out the circle and iron on or glue to the back of the 4 fabric square. Cut about 1/4 outside the interfacing circle. Sew a running stitch close to the edge and pull the stitches so the extra fabric is folded over the interfacing but not so hard that the circle bends. Pin or baste over the centre of the bag and attach by sewing a machine embroidery stitch or a zig zag stitch. Make the strap by joining the 2 ¼ strips with a diagonal seam to make a 55 (135 cm) long strip. Fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and press. Unfold and fold the raw long edges in to the middle crease and refold the first fold. This will make a 5/8 (15 mm) wide strap. All Rights Reserved Page 4

Unfold the strip on one side and put the ½ (12 mm) strip/strips of thin batting inside and refold. Press and topstitch close to each long edge. If desired stitch an embroidery stitch along the centre of the strap. Cut two 1 ½ squares from scrap fabric and draw a ½ square in the centre on both. Pin right side down on two opposite sides on the bag, ½ from the edge. Sew on the drawn squares. Cut a cross inside the squares as close to the corners as possible but don t cut the stitches. Turn the square of fabric to the back of the bag through the cut opening, press and topstitch close to the edge. All Rights Reserved Page 5

Baste each end of the strap even with the raw edges, right sides together, above the openings, making sure the strap is not twisted. Fold the lining twice so the centre of the square is in the bottom left corner. Measure the outside of the bag from the centre to the raw edge (radius). Measure and mark the same measurement from the bottom left corner several times across the folded lining. Cut out the quarter circle and unfold the lining to a circle that should be the same size as the outside of the bag. Place the lining right sides together with the outer bag, with the strap in between the layers. Stitch around the circle, leaving a 3-4 opening for turning to the right side. Turn to the right side and push out the seam really well. Hand stitch the opening closed and top stitch close to the edge all the way around. All Rights Reserved Page 6

Stitch two seams around the circle to make the casing for the drawstring. The openings on the front of the bag should be in between the seams. The first seam is approximately 5/8 (15 mm) from the edge and the second one a scant 1 ¼ (30 mm). Cut the cord in half. Put a safety pin on one of them and thread it through one of the openings all the way around and out of the same hole. Put both ends through a wooden bead and make a knot. Repeat with the second half of the cord for the second opening. Close the bag by pulling the cords in opposite direction. All Rights Reserved Page 7

How to make the wedge template Draw two 10 lines with a 45 angle between them using a quilting ruler. Mark 10 from the spot where the lines meet to several places in between the lines. Use the markings to draw a line between the lines to make a pie slice shape. All Rights Reserved Page 8
