PIECEMAKER S NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2019 PRESIDENT Dodi Fouts SECRETARY Judy Kikendall NEWSLETTER- Mary Quinan PROGRAM Debbie Brown & Mary Ann Burch TREASURER Debra Miller JANUARY PROGRAM JANUARY 22, 2019, 7 P.M. At our January meeting we will be talking about tips, tricks and tools. If you have a great time saving tip or trick, or a tool you can t live without please share it with the group. MINUTES OF THE DECEMBER GUILD MEETING CENTRAL KENTUCKY HOMEMAKERS QUILT GUILD MEETING December 18, 2019 Dodi called the meeting to order. The next Board meeting will be on January 08, 2019 at 5:30 pm and the next Guild meeting will be on January 22, 2019 at 7:00pm. Dodi and Judy delivered about 60 stockings to the Senior Citizen's Center. We would like to thank everyone for their participation. The Center was so pleased to get them. Debbie Brown and Mary Ann Burch had many handmade items and raffle tickets for sale to raise money for Honduras. So far, 24 people had signed up for the Beginning Quilting class. Some of these attending do not have sewing machines, so the 4-H will be donating the use of their machines. The Board is thinking of having a Saturday Sew Day to make Kid's Pillow cases. We have done this before and it worked out great. This meeting was right before Christmas and of course, it was our annual Christmas Party. We started out by playing a fun game called "Twas The NIght Before Christmas". Debbie Brown and Mary Ann Burch

were the announcers and everyone had a great time playing. Plus, there were three prizes for three winners. After the game, we had food and beverages, lots of good food. The drawing for the door prize was next. Show and tell was the last thing on the agenda. So many quilts were shown with questions asked about each one. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 pm. UPCOMING EVENTS Dear Quilters- I would like to invite you to a quilt show at Berea College. I promise you it will be like no other quilt show you've seen - because the quilts are made of wood! Using salvaged wood collected after natural disasters, I make quilts. Instead of sewing the material into patchwork designs, I use table saws, mitre saws and sanders to create my quilts. If you are curious about this exhibit, please join me on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 4:30-6:00 at Berea College's Doris Ullman Gallery. A press release is included in this email. Also, if you are interested in having me be a guest speaker at your quilt event, please let me know. I will be in Kentucky the week Feb. 4th and would love to talk with quilters! Thanks! Laura Going Against the Grain Wood Quilts by Laura Petrovich-Cheney Berea College The Doris Ulmann Gallery On view January 14 - February 15, 2019 Reception with the artist: Thursday, Feb. 7 from 4:30-6:00 Boston, MA. Laura Petrovich-Cheney is a sculptor whose work mirrors the human experience, so full of transformation, second chances, reinvention, and resilience. Her work finds meaning within experienced natural disasters and the debris that litters the affected communities. The once organized neighborhoods became recognizable only as piles of rubble haphazardly distributed during the chaos. Inspired by contemporary and traditional quilts, she pieced together found wood from the homes destroyed by these storms. These devastations, including Hurricane Sandy and the Gatlinburg, TN fires, serve as evidence to how we all suffer loss regardless of color, language or economic status. Our hearts break equally and painfully. Laura s own story unfolded when her parents lost their home after Hurricane Sandy; and subsequently, her father eventually lost his life repairing that home. However, the main focus of the work is not loss, rather the work is about the creation of something healing, meaningful and hopeful in the wake of severe destruction. As the artist writes, The work is rooted in repetition and pattern to mimic life, growth, regeneration.

The Doris Ulmann Galleries educate, inspire, and challenge the broader Berea College community by showcasing high-quality art exhibitions and by interpreting and preserving the culturally significant Berea College Art Collection. Gallery Hours: Mon - Thur: 8am-6pm, Fri: 8am-5pm, Sun: 1pm-5pm Location: The Doris Ulmann Galleries Rogers-Traylor Art Building, Corner of Ellipse St. & Chestnut St., Berea, KY 40404 Artist will present at the gallery during the week of February 4-10, 2019 For more information about the exhibit, please contact: Molly K. Baker Manager, Doris Ulmann Galleries Assistant Curator, College Art Collections CPO 2162 Berea, KY 40404 859-985-3083 molly_baker@berea.edu http://dulmanngalleries.berea.edu For more information about the artist, please visit www.lauracheney.com CHARITY QUILTS Quilts For Kids- We donated 68 quilts for Quilts for Kids in 2018. We also made 85 bead bags for UK Hospital. Thanks so much for your continued support! Stockings for Seniors- Ellie Roberts made greeting cards to include in the stockings.
