LESSONPLAN DIVERSITY CARDS Rules: 1. This is a no talking activity. After the rules have been discussed at each table the participants can not talk to the other participants or the facilitator. 2. Once a game has been completed at a table, the winner will move to the next table. 3. Winners will not move to the next table until all tables have completed their game. Time 10-15 minutes Activity Level Low OVERVIEW Description: Invite the players to play this interesting card game that challenges the participants to not only work on their non-verbal skills, but also understand the differences in written and unwritten rules within a culture. Set up the cards on four different tables with the instructions for each table. Be sure to not let the participants read or see the rules until the activity is started and the participants have taken their seats. Tell the group that this is a non-talking activity and they will not be able to talk until the entire activity is over. The only time that the group can talk is at the very beginning of the activity when the participants read the rules. Ask the participants to read the instructions at their table and make sure that each participant understands the rules at their table, but they can not ask the other tables for help or clarification. After the rules have been read and discussed, the group can not talk until the end of the activity, and the facilitator removes the rules from each table. Participants 16-32 Materials 4 Decks of Cards and instructions (included) for each table Objective To win the card game and move to the next table. LESSONPLAN OVERVIEW QUESTIONS If each table follows the rules, the winner will move to the next table which has completely different rules than the previous table. This will create chaos, confusion and misunderstandings to the new group members. More often than not, someone at the table who did not win will gladly tell the new member how wrong he/she is when they think they have won the hand (non-verbally of course). The new member will be very confused when another participant wins the hand with a 2 of Diamonds instead of an Ace of Spades. There will be four rounds to allow a different player to move to the four different tables if they continue winning. After the four rounds, allow the group members to talk and discuss what transpired during the activity. I typically ask the participants to think about the different cultures at each table, and if the winners or the participants at the tables had different perspectives of how the activity went. 1. What were the differences at the individual tables? 2. Did any of the participants who didn t win know that the rules changed at each table? If not, how did the new members of the group act during the hands? 3. What did any of the winners think when they moved to a table with different rules? 4. Did any participants get upset or frustrated when another participant thought they had won because of the their previous tables rules? 5. How do other cultures around the world view some of the things we do that are social norms? 6. Have any participants traveled around the world and noticed cultural differences from the USA? 7. How can we become aware of the rules or social norms of those around us?
