Diary January 27, 2018 After 30 years, my musical collaborator Paul Ford retired. I wasn t sure if that meant I would have to as well. But my dear friend Bob Hurwitz introduced me to Thomas Bartlett, who introduced me to an entirely new way of making music in his studio, hours of playing, singing, and recording, never searching for the illusion of perfection. We ve decided to share our music-making journey with you, in the form of a Diary. 1. I Have Found My Happiness (Teitur) 2. Dayton, Ohio - 1903 (Randy Newman) 3. Living Without You (Randy Newman) 4. 1. I HAVE FOUND MY HAPPINESS Lyric by Teitur Lassen; Music by Teitur Lassen and Lucio Mantel Arlo & Betty Music (KODA/ASCAP)/Hotelbar Publishing GmbH/ Warner Chappell Music the furthest place I went When I was alone and lost with all my money spent digging in the dirt In fact that s where my happiness it came to me at first in beer and gin and wine When I was so high and drunk, I could not see the signs When the next day she was gone and I was on my own That winter when I understood the meaning of alone When it comes to happiness you know that there are two The one I found in pleasures and the one I found in you Relations are what makes me happy, that s what makes me sing in a silver ring 2. DAYTON, OHIO - 1903 Randy Newman Unichappell Music Inc. (BMI) Sing a song of long ago When things were green and movin slow And people d stop to say hello Or they d say hi to you Would you like to come over for tea With the missus and me? It s a real nice way To spend the day In Dayton, Ohio On a lazy Sunday afternoon in 1903 Sing a song of long ago When trees could grow And days flowed quietly The air was clean and you could see And folks were nice to you Would you like to come over for tea With the missus and me? It s a real nice way To spend the day In Dayton, Ohio On a lazy Sunday afternoon in 1903 3. LIVING WITHOUT YOU Randy Newman Unichappell Music Inc. (BMI) The milk truck hauls the sun up And the paper hits the door The subway shakes my floor And I think about you Time to face the dawning gray Of another lonely day It s so hard Everyone s got something And they re out trying to get some more They got something to get up for Well, I ain t about to Nothing s gonna happen Nothing s gonna change It s so hard 4. MY MOM Marc Anthony Thompson Genghis Music (ASCAP) They got five televisions in a house built for three Look upon that fake fireplace, you know the bucktoothed boy is me See that wood-paneled room? That s where I learned to drink You see that hole in the wall? That was Seagram s I think And that tree was a goalpost, that bathroom it was a shroud That closet it was a phone booth, and that mirror it was a crowd See that guy with the bad knees and his heart on his sleeve? Watch him slip me ten dollars when it comes time to leave It s been five years and some change And this world is getting so strange But this house smells just the same And my mom, my sweet mom, she don t remember my name My mom She can t remember my name, not my mom
I sit on her bed, and I kiss her right behind the ear She calls out for a dog that s been dead for a year I say, How is it going? just like I didn t know I hold on the both of her hands too afraid to let her go And five times exactly, no more and no less She says, How you ve been eatin, boy? and I say, OK, I guess In this room where she made me, each day she grows weak She flips on the Golden Girls and the first tear hits my cheek It s been five years and some change And this world is getting so strange But this old house smells just the same And my mom, my sweet mom, she don t remember my name My mom, can t remember my name She s my mom, now she can t remember my name My mom can t remember my name My mom 5. GOING TO A TOWN Rufus Wainwright (with lyric alterations by Mandy Patinkin) WB Music Corp. obo Put Tit on Music (ASCAP) I m going to a town that has already been burnt down I m going to a place that has already been disgraced I m gonna see some folks who have already been let down I m so tired of America I m gonna make it up for all of the Sunday Times I m gonna make it up for all of the nursery rhymes They never really seem to want to tell the truth I m so tired of you, Jerusalem I ve got a life to lead, Jerusalem I ve got a life to lead Tell me, do you really think you go to hell for having loved? Tell me, enough of thinking everything that you ve done is good I really need to know, after soaking the bodies in blood I m so tired of Jerusalem I really need to know I may just never see you again, or might as well You took advantage of a world that loved you well I m going to a town that has already been burnt down I m so tired of you, Jerusalem I ve got a life to lead, Jerusalem I ve got a life to lead I got a soul to feed I got a dream to heed And that s all I need I m going to a town That has already been burnt down 6. DREAMING Loudon Wainwright III Spirit Two Music obo Snowden Music (ASCAP) I d rather be dreaming than living Living s just too hard to do It s chances not choices Noises not voices A day s just a thing to get through Living s just too hard to do I d rather be dreaming than talking There s nothing to hear or to say With ears covered, mouth closed The world is opposed Nothing gets in or away There s nothing to hear or to say I d rather be dreaming than thinking Thoughts are small comfort to me Dreams might be pretend But at least dreams end And I just can t stop thinking, you see Thoughts are small comfort to me I d rather be dreaming than sleeping Just sleeping you re just as well dead In dreams I can fly In dreams I don t die That s why I lie here in this bed Just sleeping you re just as well dead 7.
