Thank you Gwen, for leading us through 2008-2009. You are a hard act to follow. Economic recovery is still a concern for all of us. However as of this date, GIOS is doing okay. I urge all members to be involved not only because of your interest in orchids but to enjoy the fellowship also. Let the Board members know of your concerns. We always welcome new ideas and suggestions from the membership. The first of the events for 2010 is the upcoming Spring Orchid Show, March 26 and 27 So start grooming your plants and bring them for display at the spring show. The theme of our show will be Arts and Flowers. Our Spring Fantasy show will again be held in conjunction with the Hanapepe Economic Alliance. Our part of the show will be held on March 26 and 27. As usual, set up for the show is on Thursday afternoon, March 26 starting at 1:00 p.m. at our usual venue, the United Church of Christ in Hanapepe. We will not supply Thursday evening dinner this year for the volunteers who are there to help with the set-up. Thus there will be Makana Award points given for this set-up participation. Those bringing plants to display should notify Stella Shimatsu via phone 651-2692; by mail at: 3733 Elau Rd., Kalaheo, HI 96741; or by email at skshima@ hawaiiantel.net two weeks before the show or no later than Wednesday evening, March 24th with the complete name of the plant and the owner s name (as you wish it to appear on the label). If you find a plant that has opened at the last minute, bring it and we will block-print the name tag. Display plants must arrive between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon to be considered for judging the next day. Everyone, please bring at least one orchid to display. Even if you do not think it is a prize winner, let us be the judge. It looks a lot better to the public when our amateurs and enthusiasts care enough about our organization to participate rather than leave ail the work up to the commercial growers. Both ribbons and cash rewards are given to the first, second and third places. Judging of the display plants will take place on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. The show will open to the public at 1:00 p.m. or later, if the judging takes longer than anticipated. January - February 2010 Page 3 GIOS 2009 Christmas Party in Photos The Annual GIOS Christmas Party was held on December 5 th and was enjoyed by everyone. A new Board was sworn in for 2010 and 2011 and outgoing President Gwen Teragawa thanked all of her former board members for their hard work the past two years. What we needed to do was to thank Gwen for the wonderful job she did as our leader and for giving her all in making the club a success. The food was excellent. After dinner, Morgan Lopez presented a slide show that she had made from Ada Koene s photos showing the club in action over the past year. Some games were also played such as Bingo and an interesting version of Jan-ken-pon (rock, paper, scissors), see photos on the following pages. It may look like our members are mad at each other but it was all in good fun. So many orchids were given away as part of the Makana Point System. It is nice to see how many members turned out to help with the shows, tours, workshops and meetings. We can look forward to another successful year under the guidance of our incoming president Carol Kanna. Ada Koene
