Underwater Stripes Bag Skill Level: Beginner Designed By Sara Lawson Sewn By Sara Lawson www.sewsweetness.com Fabric Needed Exterior Lining Materials Needed Pellon TP971F Thermolam Plus Pellon SF101 Shape-Flex 12 zipper Thread Fabric Marker 1/2 yard each of two different fabrics 1/2 yard 1/2 yard 1 1/2 yards Tools Needed Rotary Cutting tools and mat Ruler Sewing machine and related supplies

Cutting and Assembly Instructions All seam allowances are 1/2 unless other noted. Finished Size: 15 x 9 3/4 Cutting Instructions Cut four each 3 1/2 strips from the two exterior fabrics. Cut these strips into 3 1/2 squares. If the fabric has only 40 usable width, cut additional squares until there are 48 squares of each fabric. Fabric A Fabric B Cut fabrics and interfacings following instructions on the template page. Cut two pieces 1 1/2 x 3 from the lining fabric for the zipper tabs. Cut two strips 1 x 30 from the Pellon Thermolam Plus for the strap inserts. Cut two strips 3 1/2 x 30 from the Pellon Shape-Flex. Half Square Triangle Units Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the lighter of the two fabrics from corner to corner as shown. Drawn Line Underwater Stripes Bag Page 2

Layer one fabric A and one fabric B, right sides together. Stitch 1/4 from the drawn line on both sides. It is very important to keep a straight a 1/4 seam allowance. This will make the points match perfectly when combining units. Drawn Line Stitched Line Cut the half square triangles apart on the drawn line. Drawn Line/ Cutting Line Press the seam while closed, then open the half square triangle and press the seam toward the darker of the two triangles. Trim the nibs from both corners. Check dimension of the half square triangle. It should measure 3 1/8 at this point (finished half square triangle unit will be 2 5/8 ). Nib Underwater Stripes Bag Page 3

Making one each for the front and back of the bag, lay the half square triangle units out as shown. Sew five rows of seven units using a 1/4 seam allowance. Press the seams for rows 1, 3, and 5 towards the right and the seams for rows 2 and 4 towards the left. Sew the rows together using a 1/4 seam allowance. Press the seams open. Fold the pieced units in half. Using the main panel pattern template, cut one on the fold for the front of the bag and one for the back of the bag. Straps - Make two Divide the remaining half square triangle units into two equal piles. Place two units right sides together as a mirror image. Sew using a 1/4 seam allowance. Press seam open. Continue adding pieces in a long row until all pieces are stitched for both straps. Straps should be equal in length. Underwater Stripes Bag Page 4

Fusing Fabrics Fuse the corresponding pieces of Thermolam Plus to the exterior main panels. NOTE: Exterior main panels may be quilted as desired at this time. Fuse the Shape-Flex to the corresponding pocket pieces, both lining main panels and both straps. Assemble the Straps Fold one strap in half lengthwise. Press. Fold the bottom long edge of the strap up 1/4. Press. Also fold the top long edge of the strap down 1/4. Press. Repeat for the other strap. Open up one strap and place the strap insert inside. The insert should fit between the pressed creases. Repeat for other strap. Fold straps back together. Press to fuse Thermolam in place. Topstitch along both long edges 1/8 from the edge on both straps. Straps may be quilted if desired. Underwater Stripes Bag Page 5

Measure and mark the top of the exterior main panels, 1 in from both the left and right edges. Place one end of the straps to the inside of the marks as shown. Make sure the straps are not twisted. The raw edges of the straps should be even with the raw edges of the top of the exterior main panels. Baste in place with a 1/4 seam allowance. Assemble the Lining Place the two pocket pieces right sides together. Sew along the top straight edge only. Press the seam open. Turn pocket pieces wrong sides together. Topstitch along the sewn edge with a 1/8 seam allowance. Place the curved edge of the pocket even with the curved bottom/side edge of the lining main panel. Pin in place. Baste the pinned edge using a 1/4 seam allowance. Also fingerpress a crease down the center of the main panel. Sew down the creased edge on the pocket only. This will divide the pocket area in half. Underwater Stripes Bag Page 6

Sew the Darts Transfer the dart markings to the left and right side of both the lining and exterior main panels on the wrong side of the fabric using a fabric marker or chalk. Fold the dart right sides together matching the marks. Pin in place and stitch. Trim seam allowance. Press seam open. Install the Zipper Press the 1 1/2 x 3 pieces in half right sides together so that both short ends meet. Press. Open fabric. Fold one end in to the crease. Open fabric again. Fold the other edge in to the crease as shown. Two tiny pieces of double-fold tape were created. Underwater Stripes Bag Page 7

If necessary, trim the zipper to 11 including the zipper tape. Slide one end of the zipper inbetween the double fold tape with the end of the zipper snug against the center crease. Pin in place. Topstitch 1/8 from the edge next to the zipper. Repeat for the other end of the zipper with the other piece of double fold tape. Trim the excess fabric on either end of the zipper so that it is the same width as the zipper. Place one of the exterior main panels right side up. Align the zipper with the top 1 1/2 in from each side edge. Pin in place. Sew the zipper in place with a 1/4 seam allowance, including both zipper tabs. NOTE: Stitching will cover the top of the straps. Place one of the lining main panels right side up. Align the exterior main panel with the stitched zipper right side down on the lining panel. Pin in place. Sew directly on top of the stitching from the previous step (do not sew the beginning and ending 1/2 ). Repeat these two steps for the other side of the zipper. Underwater Stripes Bag Page 8

Unzip the zipper halfway for turning the bag after sewing. Open out the fabric pieces so that both the exterior and lining fabrics are right sides together on either side of the zipper and pin in place. Starting at one end of the zipper on the exterior fabric side, stitch using a 1/2 seam allowance around the edge of the pieces, pivoting at each corner and finishing at the zipper on the other side. Do not sew on top of the zipper tabs. Repeat this step for the lining fabrics, using a 5/8 seam allowance and leaving a 6 opening along the bottom for turning. Turn the bag right side out through the opening in the lining. Fold the opening in the lining in 1/2 on each side and topstitch or slipstitch the opening closed. Press the whole bag for a finished look. Underwater Stripes Bag Page 9
