July 2016 A program of the Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce Join us at our next meeting this Friday, July 15, 2016 @ 7:45am July Meeting: Business Boot Camp Our July meeting will offer you an opportunity to analyze your strengths and opportunities. You will evaluate yourself and work on a quarterly action plan to help you grow your business! Also - Discussion with Commissioner Karla Bigham & Senator Katie Sieben Karla and Katie will be joining us for a brief discussion about the role of government in business and their experiences as a woman in politics. Some background on Senator Sieben: Senator Katie Sieben represents residents of Minnesota Senate District 54, which includes the cities of Newport, Saint Paul Park, Cottage Grove, South Saint Paul, Hastings, and Afton; and Denmark, Nininger and Grey Cloud Island townships. Senator Sieben was re-elected to the Minnesota Senate in November 2012 after serving two terms in the Minnesota House of Representatives and two terms in the Senate. She serves as the Assistant Majority Leader, the Chair of the Subcommittee on Elections and as a member of the Rules, Environment and Energy, Finance, and Capital Investment committees. Katie grew up in Newport and attended South Washington public schools. She graduated from Colorado College and was a policy fellow at

the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute for Public Affairs, and received her Masters degree in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School. Prior to her election, Katie worked as an aide in the United States Senate. Katie, her husband, Josh Straka, and their three children live in Cottage Grove. Some background about Commissioner Bigham: Commissioner Karla Bigham was elected to the Washington County Board on November 4, 2014. She is a life-long resident of Washington County. Bigham served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2007 until 2011. She was the vice chair of the Public Safety and Civil Justice Committee, and served on the Public Safety Finance, State Government Finance, and Veteran Affairs Committees. From 2005 until 2007, Commissioner Bigham served on the Cottage Grove City Council. She led the effort to secure funding and establish partnerships for the police department's K9 Unit. Prior to serving on the city council, she chaired the Cottage Grove Public Safety, Health, and Welfare Commission. Additionally, Commissioner Bigham has chaired the Cottage Grove Charter Commission and has been a member of the Cottage Grove Environmental Commission. Commissioner Bigham obtained a Master of Public Affairs Degree from the University of Minnesota in 2013. She received her Bachelor's Degree as a paralegal, with minors in sociology and political science from Winona State University in 2001. Karla is a 1997 graduate from Park High School in Cottage Grove. Commissioner Bigham and her husband, John, are residents of Cottage Grove, Minnesota.
