11 From the Prez Unbelievably the year is quickly coming to a close it seems just like yesterday that we started on the 2013 program of work that the Board laid out for the club. Where did the time go? Congratulations to the newly elected officers for 2014 and 2015; President Norm Desjardins, Vice President Fran Crandall and Secretary Bob Roehrig. Continuing on the board will be Treasurer George Hutton who s current term goes through the end of 2014. At the Board meeting earlier this week they have already began planning for next years program. The year will start off with the Wood Turning Show at the Edison Ford Winter Estates on January 18 and 19 featuring our club and the award winning replica of the 1904 Edison Phonograph. The two day event will allow our members to display, and sell their turnings if they wish, provide demonstrations of wood turning projects and meet the public. With any luck we may even generate some new members. Within the last couple of days we have also been invited to participate in the Florida Winter National Wood Art Expo and Competition that this year will be held at the Charlotte Harbor Event Center in Punta Gorda on January 11th and 12th. This participation will be discussed at our meeting on December 5th. Certainly it makes for a tight schedule given that we are committed to the Edison program the following weekend. We will solicit member input before we commit. It s unfortunate that every thing gets packed together but that s the reality when everybody wants to do their intensive program during the season. Then on March 2nd, the local Wood Carvers clubs are having their annual show, also at the Event Center and we have committed to participate in that show. So the bottom line is get turning you ll have lots of opportunities to show off your efforts and maybe even make a buck or two!! The next major event for the club will be the Annual Holiday Dinner and Party to be held December 12 at Twin Isles Country Club, 301` Madrid, Punta Gorda. In the event you haven t already signed up and made your menu selections there is still time to do so. Another notice will be sent out so please get back to me as soon as possible. I will need to notify the club by December 8 of the number attending and what every one wants sto have for their dinner. (continued) 11
12 We are going to try to do another professional demonstration day sometime between the middle of February and the end of March in conjunction with the Sarasota Club. The demonstration just concluded by Avelino Samuel was most interesting and intriguing. It will be interesting to see how many of our members follow through and attempt to replicate his fluted hollow-forms. I know that I m going to give it a go once I can carve out some time for experimenting! Our nominee for the AAW scholarship was Dave Brethauer. There were 105 clubs submitting 168 names for the 27 available scholarships to either Arrowmont or John C Campbell. I have not been advised yet if Dave won in the AAW drawing but just learned that Vic Goetz, who was nominated by his club in Kentucky, did win a scholarship to Arrowmont. Congrats to Vic.. Both of these schools are a great experience and at sometime in a turners life he or she should attend one or the other. Well enough for now keep turning and we ll see you at the meeting on December 5. Have a great Thanksgiving. Jim 12
