RECREATING A FAMOUS PAINTING Art and Design 2200

RECREATING A FAMOUS PAINTING For this project, everyone will create a small painting based on a coloured block. When these paintings are combined, they will produce a famous painting!

HOW TO COMPLETE YOUR PAINTING: 1. When you get your small coloured block, write the number and letter of the block in your folder. Then glue the block in your folder so you do not lose it. 2. Write your name, your number and your letter on the back of your painting paper. 3. Using a light pencil like a 4H or 2H, draw the lines that you see in the small square on your painting paper. Try to place the lines in the proper places. If you have a complicated design, divide it in half vertically and horizontally. Do the same thing with your painting paper. This will help you when drawing, since now you only have to look in one quadrant at a time. 4. When you are happy with your drawing, start painting by matching the colours in the small square as closely as possible. You really need your painting to look like the small square so take your time with this step. 5. When you're finished you can put your paintings together to reveal which painting you've created!

THE KISS BY GUSTAV KLIMT (1907-1908)

THE KISS BY GUSTAV KLIMT (1907-1908) This glittering, golden image of a man kissing a women was created over 100 years ago by Gustav Klimt. When you look at the couple, only their heads, hands and feet stand out the rest is a swirl of shape and colour.

THE KISS BY GUSTAV KLIMT (1907-1908) Different patterns define each of their bodies, but the patterns overlap and mingle, symbolizing their togetherness. The effect is rich and decorative.

THE KISS BY GUSTAV KLIMT (1907-1908) The couple kneel on a carpet of bright, jewellike flowers, but the background is plain and empty. The lack of a specific setting makes it feel as if the picture could come from any time and place.

THE KISS BY GUSTAV KLIMT (1907-1908) The picture is painted in oils and coated with paper-thin pieces of gold and silver leaf. Klimt used so much gold in his pictures at the time, it has been called his golden period.

THE GREAT WAVE BY KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI (1829-33)

THE GREAT WAVE BY KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI (1829-33) Made nearly 200 years ago, this dramatic scene shows a huge wave about to crash over three tiny boats, with Japan s Mount Fuji just visible in the distance. This print (not a painting), has become one of the best-known examples of Japanese art.

THE GREAT WAVE BY KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI (1829-33) This picture was printed using carved wooden blocks one block for each colour. One by one, the blocks were coated with ink, and paper was pressed onto them, to build up the final image. Because it was a print, the artist could sell lots of copies cheaply.

THE GREAT WAVE BY KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI (1829-33) The wave towers over everything else in the picture, even the peak of Mount Fuji. The low horizon lines helps make the wave seem even bigger. It makes you feel as if you re down among the waves with the sailors, as they fight this great force of nature.

STARRY NIGHT BY VINCENT VAN GOGH (1889)

STARRY NIGHT BY VINCENT VAN GOGH (1889) The StarryNight is an oil painting on canvas. It is one of Vincent Van Gogh s most recognizable paintings. This painting is a postimpressionism painting. Post-impressionism emerged as a reaction against Impressionists concern for the natural depiction of light and colour.

STARRY NIGHT BY VINCENT VAN GOGH (1889) Painted in June, 1889, it shows the view from the window of Van Gogh s asylum room, just before sunrise. It has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941.

STARRY NIGHT BY VINCENT VAN GOGH (1889) Sunflowers, starry nights, a severed ear and suicide create a compelling story to anyone looking for an example of a tragic genius. Painting at a fantastic rate, Van Gogh achieved his greatest works during the last two years of his life.
