We welcme individuals frm academia and industry with different appraches, including, but nt limited t, hands-n design and art practices, thery, design thinking and industrial practise. Themes We invite prfessinals, researchers and artists t submit prpsals (details belw) that discuss and explre exemplary and imaginative cllabratins in relatin t the theme f the cnference, Arund the Campfire: Resilience and Intelligence. We welcme cntributins frm academia and practitiners t jin the cnversatin - arund the campfire in Rvaniemi! We are particularly interested in prpsals that develp, explre, investigate, and generate new knwledge in design, art r media, with the fllwing themes in mind: 1. Resilience and Intelligence in Design, Art and Media The theme f resilience and intelligence are especially emphasized in Cumulus Rvaniemi. What are the means, tl and methds in design that can assist prcesses f grwth and advancement in gegraphical r scietal margins? Hw can design supprt and facilitate resilience? What frms d resilience and intelligence take n in design, art and media? Hw have resilience and intelligence been present in the varius cntexts f art, design and media practice? What difference des the advancing intelligent technlgy make and hw des it cntribute t resilience? 2. Arctic and Sustainable Art and Design Envirnmental values are in the cre f designing sustainable futures. What are the netwrks and cntents discussed abve the Arctic Circle? Hw is design cnnected with gegraphies and plitics in the Nrth? What new appraches and case studies are taking place in sustainable design? What are the lessns learnt fr academics and practitiners in sustainable art and design? Situated at the Arctic Circle, Cumulus Rvaniemi will take a special interest in tpics that relate t sustainability and Arctic Art and Design. 3. Crss-disciplinary Paths fr Art, Design and Media Crss-disciplinary cllabratins between different fields are grwing and becming increasingly imprtant. What kind f crss-disciplinary practice, research and ther cllabratins are taking place in art, design and media? Hw can crss-disciplinary cllabratins in art, design and media build resilience? This track invites presentatins and discussins n crss-disciplinary prjects and cllabratins that will cme abut arund the campfire at Cumulus Rvaniemi.

4. The Future f Design Teaching This theme addresses the future f design teaching by cnsidering hw educatrs can keep up with the challenges psed by present day scieties, business and glbal issues. The bjects f design are cmplex, transient and multidimensinal, and thus the design cmpetence taught in higher educatin is hlistic and crss-discipline even mre than befre. The value f learning thrugh making and the creative relatinships between design, art, media and research will be explred with a crss-disciplinary fcus n change. Questins related t hw design educatin facilitate these learning prcesses will be addressed in this theme. 5. Creative Industries and Entrepreneurship The challenges f sustainable entrepreneurship are manifld, especially fr the cmmercialisatin f gd prduct and service ideas. Hw can creative prductin ffer livelihds in the times f AI and nvel technlgies? What are the lessns learnt in bridging prduct-service design and cmmercialisatin jurneys? Practitiners and researchers are invited t submit presentatins and papers that investigate the challenges f sustainable entrepreneurship in creative industries. 6. Cultural and Participatry Perspectives Cultural and participatry perspectives have permeated the areas f practice and research in art, design and media fields. This cnference seeks t bring tgether discussins and presentatins frm practitiners and researchers n hw resilience and intelligence sustain, r are sustained by, cultural and participatry perspectives in art, design and media. Hw d envirnments, and specifically the Arctic envirnment, impact n resilient and intelligent cultural and participatry perspectives in art, design and media? 7. Innvative Techniques, Methds and Thery Practitiners and researchers are invited t share and present new and innvative art, design and media techniques, methds and thery that have been develped. Hw is the materiality explred and expressed? This cnference is interested in cllating and discussing new and innvative methds and thery in bth practice and research that draw n intelligence t cntribute t resilience and sustainable futures fr creative industries. Types f Cntributins a. Academic papers, with a fcus n research: thery, methdlgy and findings, describing cntributins t new knwledge. b. Prfessinal papers, including industrial and educatinal, with a fcus n practical applicatin. c. Psters, with a fcus n the cnference s main theme and its visual cmmunicatin frm either an academic r a prfessinal perspective.

Participatin can be individual r cllective. Please send an academic abstract f n mre than 500 wrds t any categry f yur chice fr duble blind peer review. N restrictins are placed n the amunt f submissins per persn. Instructins fr authrs All submissins (academic and prfessinal papers, psters and wrks f art) will underg duble blind peer review by an internatinal team f peer reviewers. All accepted abstracts will be published in the Cumulus Rvaniemi 2019 Cnference prgram (with a University f Lapland Faculty f Art and Design ISBN). The Cumulus Assciatin will publish selected academic and prfessinal papers, psters and wrks f art as nline cnference prceedings after the cnference (with an ISBN). When preparing their submissin, the authrs shuld take int accunt the fllwing: All submissins must be in English. All presentatins are als in English. Cntributins fr the peer review shuld be submitted annymusly and shuld nt cntain the name(s) nr institutin(s) f the authr(s). Submissin implies cnsent fr the material t be used fr the cnference and cnference publicatins. At least ne f the authrs shuld be present at the cnference t present the wrk. Fr the academic track, the cntent shuld be unpublished wrk. Fr ther tracks, the cntent des nt need t be unpublished, but the authrs must cmply with the use f the submissin material fr the cnference publicatins. Fr each submissin categry, see the detailed instructins f the submissin text, e.g. wrd limits, and ther required material. Authrs must specify the theme that they are addressing. Authrs must clarify their emphasis f their cntributins with a maximum f five (5) keywrds. The wrks f art have t be accmpanied by a 500 wrd abstract and tw images (maximum) with a file size f 0.7-1 MB (and 300dpi where pssible) in jpg r PDF frmat. The abstract f the wrk f art has t include the name f the artist, designer r grup, title f the wrk, year f prductin, material(s) used and the name f the dcumenting phtgrapher. Each image must be clearly specified (infrmatin fr the file name) as fllws: Name f the artist/designer/grup Title f wrk f art Year Size in centimeters All submissin prpsals shuld be in pdf frmat. Wrk f art: The measurements f wrk f art will be a maximum f: height 15 cm x width 15 cm x depth 15 cm. Failure t respect these characteristics applied t the wrk f art will result in the exclusin f the wrk fr exhibitin and eliminatin frm and frm f presentatin. All techniques will be accepted, fllwing the principles abve, but with sme cnsideratins: there is a limited number f audivisual equipment and tls, such as televisin screens, prjectrs and electricity r lights in the exhibitin space. The wrks must be ready fr installatin, fr example t be placed n exhibitin plinths r hung in the space. The wrks have t be recent and n lder than 2017. The wrk f art will be sent t the fllwing mail address: University f Lapland, Faculty f Art and Design, Prfessr Heidi Pietarinen, Bx 112, FIN-96101 Rvaniemi, Finland. The wrks must be marked with the artists names. The failure t cmply will result in the eliminatin f the wrk f art. After installatin, the artists will cllect the wrks f art during the last day f the cnference. N wrk f art will be returned t their wners. Respnsibilities t exhibitrs (psters and wrks f art) During the exhibitin, the University f Lapland maintains the right t use the psters and wrks f art fr prmtinal materials. The wrks f art are nt insured during shipment t the University f Lapland, r the duratin f the installatin nr the exhibitin. The University f Lapland and the Cumulus (the rganizatin) will nt be respnsible fr any damage caused by transprtatin via mail. Artists will nt receive any remuneratin fr participating in the Cumulus art exhibitin. The exhibitin pening will take place during Cumulus Rvaniemi 2019, n 29.05.2019 at the University f Lapland, Faculty f Art and Design.
