MULTICONTACT AUXILIARY RELAY TYPE HFASl DESCRIPTION The HFASl relys re instntneous, hinged-rmture, multi-contct, uxiliry relys. They hve six (6) electriclly seprte contct circuits dptle for either circuit-opening or circuit-closing ppliction. This rrngement permits numer of opertions to e performed simultneously. The internl-connection digrm for HFASl relys is shown in Figure 4. The HFASl relys re ville for front or ck connection. The front-connected relys re suitle for surfce mounting only. The ck-connected relys re suitle for either surfce mounting or semi-flush mounting; steel flnge is necessry for the ltte.r to provide mounting with norml covers. The outline nd pnel-drilling digrms for HFASl relys re shown 1n Figures 5, 6 nd 7. APPLICATION The Type HFA relys re uxiliry devices tht re suitle for ppliction where the operting chrcteristics nd rtings s descried in this ook re required. CHARACTERISTICS The HFA51A rely 1s self reset nd hs n instntneous dropout. The HFASlB rely 1s hnd reset y mens of plunger ssemly instlled through the trnsprent cover. The HFASlP is similr to the HFASlA except tht it hs plldium contcts. The HFASlS is similr to the HFASlA except tht the () contct 1n the No. 3 position is used with n externl resistor to otin pickup time of 8 milliseconds for high-speed opertion. The resistor 1s shorted y the () contct until the rely picks up. When the rely picks up, the () contct opens nd plces the resistor in series with the rely coil. Unles s relys re ordered with specific contct rrngements, they re shipped with six circuit-closing contcts (Code 60), with the exception of HFA51S, which is shipped with Code 01 contcts. Code 01 is ville in the HFA51S only. The HFASlS is not ville in Codes 51 nd 60. Suject to the limittions noted 1n the preceding prgrph, the contct rrngement cn e chnged to provide ny of the comintions shown in Tle I. These instructions do not purport to cover ll detils or vritions in equipment nor to provide for every possile contingency to e met in connection with instlltion, opertion or intennce. Should further informtion e desired or should prticulr prolems rise which re not covered sufficiently for the purchser's purposes, the mtter should e referred to the Generl Electric Compny. To the extent required the products descried herein meet pplicle ANSI, IEEE nd NEMA stndrds; ut no such ssurnce is given with respect to locl codes nd ordinnces ecuse they vry gretly.

RATINGS The HFASlA, HFASlB nd HFA51P relys re ville with coil rtings for stndrd voltges up to 575 volts t 25, SO, or 60 cycles nd up to 250 volts DC inclusive. The HFASlS rely is ville in DC voltge rting up to 250 VDC inclusive. DC COILS Wtts Freq. --- Cold Hot Cycles 7.8 6.0 MOUNTING AND CONNECTIONS 25 so 60 TABLE III AC COILS Volt Amper-es Wtts 10 23 32 INSTALLATION The Type HFA relys should e mounted on verticl surfce. The outline nd pneldrilling digrms re shown in Figures 5, 6 nd 7. Surfce mounting on steel pnels requires n ins ulting ushing for ech terminl. The internl-connection digrm for Type HFA relys is shown in Figure 4. ADJUSTMENTS PICKUP * The relys re djusted t the fctory to pick up t 73-81% of rting for AC coils nd 55-61% of rting for DC coils. Normlly these djustments should not chnge; if it is necessry to redjust the rely, the rmture-djusting nut should e lifted 1/16 inch, turned clockwise to rise pickup or counterclockwise to lower pickup, nd then reseted in the hexgonl groove in the rmture tilpiece. After the rely hs een mounted it should e operted few times to e certin tht the mechnism opertes freely, tht the contct surfces lign properly, nd tht self-reset models drop out quickly when the coil is de-energized. PICKUP TIME The HFA51S relys should pick up in eight milliseconds (8 ms) or less when rted voltge is pplied cross the resistor nd rely coil comintion. This time my e ltered y djustment of the rmture stop screw. CONTACTS The contcts re djusted t the fctory nd should not require redjustment since they re self-ligning. *Revised stnce lst tssue 4 4 9 12
* HFA51 contct circuits cn e chnged from circuit-opening to circuit-closing, or vice vers, y removing the fixed contct, turning it over nd replcing it. * * If for ny reson it ecomes necessry to redjust the contcts, for instnce, if contct is chnged from circuit-opening to circuit-closing, the following checks nd djustments should e mde: 1. Mke sure tht ll contct nd coil studs re tight. 2. Mke sure tht the rmture is free of inding when operted y hnd. The rided "pigtil" led on ll contcts must e djusted to exert minimum force on the contcts 3. Mke mechnicl contct djustments s follows: Normlly-Open Contcts Wipe nd Gp (Normlly-open contcts shll e djusted efore normlly-closed contcts). The moving contct rms shll e djusted so tht the normlly-open contcts mke pproximtely simultneously (.008 inch) when the rely is operted y hnd. All normlly-open contcts shll hve wipe of 3/64 to 3/32 inches. The contct gp shll e pproximtly 7/32 inch. This cn e djusted s follows: i) Insert 0. 058 gge etween the rmture nd pole fce nd close the rmture. ii) Bend the left-hnd moving contct to just light the continuity lmp. iii) Remove the 0. 058 gge nd end the remining moving contcts so tht ll moving contcts mke t pproximtely the sme time. iv) To check performnce, turn the stop screw in until one contct continuity lmp is lit. Turn the stop screw in n dditionl 1/2 turn nd ll continuity lmps should e lit. Bck off the stop screw to otin t lest 1/4 inch contct gp. v) Insert 7 /32-inch gge etween ny of the normlly-open moving nd sttionry contcts, nd turn the stop screw clockwise until the continuity lmp lights. Lock the stop screw in this position with the locking nut. Normlly-Closed Contct Gp nd Wipe The moving contct rms shll e djusted so tht the normlly-closed contcts mke pproximtely simultneously (+.008) when the rely is operted y hnd. The wipe nd gp re utom t iclly set y the formtion of the sttionry contcts nd the strength of the control spring. Adjustments cn e mde s follows: *Revised slnce lst Lssue 5
* CONTACT CLEANING i) Turn the stop screw clockwise until the first normlly-closed contct opens. ii ) Turn the stop screw n dditionl 1/2 turn clockwise. All normllyclosed contcts should e open. iii ) Turn the stop screw counterclockwise until there s pproximtely 1/8" gp etween the stop screw nd rmture. Lock the stop screw in this position. Recheck pickup fter the ove chnges or djustments hve een mde. MAINTENANCE In clening fine silver contcts flexile urnishing tool should e used. This consists of flexile strip of metl with n etch-roughened surfce, resemling in effect, superfine file. The polis hing ction is so delicte tht no scrtches re left, yet corroded mteril will e removed rpidly nd throughly. Fine silver contcts should not e clened with knives, files or rsive pper or cloth. The urnishing tool descried s included n the stndrd XRTllA rely tool kit otinle from the fctory. RENEWAL PARTS When ordering renewl prts, ddres s the nerest Sles Office of the Electric Compny, specify quntity required, nme of prt wnted, nd give nmeplte dt. The renewl prts puliction is GEF-2757. 6 Generl complete
