In April 1961, Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. He was in space for around 2 hours and then returned to Earth. He did not land on the Moon so the race had not yet been won. Place his picture on the timeline. Now give the children the sources for Valentina can they work out who she is? The first woman in space was Russian astronaut Valentina Tereshkova, in 1963. Even though she didn t land there, a crater on the far side of the Moon is named after her! Play Holsts planets.
