Key Skills to be covered: History Taken from Taken from I know some things that happened to other people in the past. I understand how to put a few events or objects in order of when they happened. I use words and phrases such as: now, yesterday, last week, when I was younger, a long time ago, a very long time ago, before I was born. When my parents/carers were young. I use time lines to order events or objects. I have found out some facts about events that happened long ago. I have looked at books to help me find out about the past. I have listened to stories about the past. I write in sentences things I have found out about the past. I draw pictures and write about them to tell others about the past. National Curriculum Links: I tell stories about the past using my story writing skills. I draw labelled diagrams and write about them to tell others about people, objects or events from the past. I understand how to put people, events and objects in order of when they happened, using a scale the teacher has given me. I use words and phrases such as: recently, when my parents/carers were children, decades, and centuries. I use time lines to order events or objects. I use time lines to place an event or a significant person. I have looked at books and pictures (And: listened to stories, eye witness accounts, pictures, photographs, artefacts, historic buildings, visit to a museum, visit to a gallery, visit to an historical site, used the internet.) I can recount the main events from a significant event in history. (Giving some interesting details) I ask, What happened in the past? and use information to help me answer the question. Pupils should be taught about: changes within living memory where appropriate, these should be used to reveal aspects of change in national life events beyond living memory that are significant nationally or globally [for example, the Great Fire of London, the first aeroplane flight or events commemorated through festivals or anniversaries] the lives of significant individuals in the past who have contributed to national and international achievements, some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods [for example, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, William Caxton and Tim Berners-Lee, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and LS Lowry, Rosa Parks and Emily Davison, Mary Seacole and/or Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell] significant historical events, people and places in their own locality Cross-curricular links, especially opportunities for Literacy, Numeracy and ICT within teaching: English: Newspaper article PE: Dance Music: Holst the planets

I know some things that happened to other people in the past. I understand how to put a few events or objects in order of when they happened. I use words and phrases such as: now, yesterday, last week, when I was younger, a long time ago, a very long time ago, before I was born. When my parents/carers were young. I use time lines to order Hold races between the children e.g. running, jumping etc. (Use house groups) Hands up who wanted to win? Why? Tell the children that they are going to find out about a great race between different countries the race to the moon. Man reached the moon in 1969 but up until that time there was a great race between different countries in the world to reach the moon. Can the children guess who the first astronaut in space was? Show a picture of Albert. The first ever monkey astronaut was Albert who on June 11, 1948 rode on a V2 rocket. Albert died of suffocation during the flight. Albert was followed by Albert II who survived the V2 flight but died on impact on June 14, 1949 after a parachute failure. Model writing a timeline from 1940 to 1980. (see below in for event ideas) Children given a Jumbo timeline and picture cards, They place the cards in the correct place on the timeline. What happened first? Etc. Note down when albert went into space. 1949 Albert goes into space 1969 First man on the moon 2010 I was born Leave spaces for: 1957 - Laika 1961 Yuri Gargarin 1963 - Valentina Tereshkova As Ext: write down why you think man wanted to reach the moon? Why was there a race to reach the moon? Review the timeline from last week. In the 1950 s another astronaut went into space. Ask children to discuss where the 1950 s are on the timeline. Can they guess who the astronaut was? Post a picture of Laika on the timeline. Laika was a Soviet space dog who became one of the first animals in space, and the first animal to orbit the Earth on Sputnik 2. Just give the children the name of the dog. Ask them to write this on their whiteboards. Explain that they are going to try to find out some information. Where did Laika come from? What rocket did she fly on? What happened to Laika? In April 1961, Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. He was in space for around 2 hours and then returned to Earth. He did not land on the Moon so the race had not yet been won. Place his picture on the timeline. Now give the children the sources for Valentina can they work out who she is?
