Author Visit Taran Matharu We had a truly motivational visit with Taran Matharu in May. He talked to our students about how he was inspired to write the Summoner series from his favourite films and television shows. These were Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Pokemon, World of Warcraft, Assassins Creed and Skyrim. In the Novice (the first book in the Summoner series) an orphaned blacksmith s apprentice accidently summons a demon from another world. He must travel with his demon to the Vocans Academy, where the gifted are trained in the art of summoning. Many students have been waiting for the final book in the series to be released and those that hadn t already read The Novice were very excited about discovering a new fantasy adventure. He has always loved books and was a huge reader as a child. Running out of books he wanted to read he decided to create his own. When he was 22 he entered a competition, National Novel Writing Month, where he had to write a 50,000 word story. He then uploaded his story to Wattpad, It took a while for his story to attract interest but eventually reached 7½ million readers. He was contacted by agents and publishers as well as NBC who interviewed him. His series has now been printed in 15 different languages as well as hitting the New York Times bestseller list. Taran is currently negotiating a film deal, but couldn t tell us who with! Taran is now a full time author. His typical working day would be 2 hours of writing and 4-5 hours of research. This includes going to the cinema, watching Netflix and playing video games. Which sounded amazing to many of our students. He told us how he can usually write a novel in about 6 months and is currently working on a new series which will be out in 2019. As well as having been asked by Dreamworks to write fan fiction for How to Train a Dragon. His idol was Darren Shan who he has now met. Taran really enjoys doing school visits and has been presented with lots of fan art, such as: tattoos, clay models, swords, toys and various other gifts. We really enjoyed our time with him and can t wait to read the new book Outcast. Maria Stoian, Lia Smith & Evie Whittle Student Librarians

Meet Elle Evans: pretty, popular - and never been kissed. Meet Noah Flynn: badass, volatile - and a total player. When Elle decides to run a kissing booth for the school carnival, she never imagines she'll sit in it or that her first ever kiss would be with bad boy Noah. From that moment, her life is turned upside down but is this a romance destined for happiness or heartbreak? If you love Holly Bourne and John Green, then you will adore The Kissing Booth! The stakes are high in this chilling sci-fi thriller, in which professional scythes control who dies. Everything else is out of human control, managed by the Thunderhead. It's a perfect system until it isn't. It s been a year since Rowan went off-grid. Hunted by the Scythedom, he has become an urban legend, a vigilante snuffing out corrupt scythes in a trial by fire.
