TH E MARK OF COMPLETE PLANER SATISFACTION
SINGLE SURFACE PLANER DO U B L E SCREW-ADJUSTED CAPACITY 20" BED x 8",dea' for small shopsr millsr pattern shopsr schoo'sr 'umber yards - as an auxiliary p'aner for departments of furniture and allied factories - repair and maintenance departments THIS sturdy, precision-built machine brings to the low-priced small planer field a new high standard of both construction and performance. It is exceedingly accurate and a thoroughly complete piece of fine equipment that embodies many features formerly found only in the larger and much more expensive planers... a machine that is bound to give many years of trouble-free service... the product of planer specialists. When all angles are considered, including price, we believe it will become perfectly obvious that No. 208 is the wisest selection anyone requiring a small planer could possibly make. Illustrating the drive for all four feed Rolls, the convenience and accessibility of ad. justments for the Rolls, Pressure Bar and Chipbreaker.
CUTTERHEAD CAPACITY The capacity of the No. 208 is from lis inch to 8 inches thick and 20 inches wide. It will plane single pieces 10% inches long; and when butted, pieces as short as 4 inches can be fed through the machine. It has four?riven ro~ls. The top infeed roll and chip~reaker are se?tlonal. which permits feeding.of several plece~, ~f varyl~g thickness simultaneously without danger of kickback. BUILT FOR VIBRATIONLESS OPERATION The one-piece semi-steel cast frame is 39 inches long and 35 inches wide. The base casting weighs 975 Ibs. Into this frame with four heavy, long integral gibs, is built the one-piece, heavy semi-steel b~d or ta~le (box construction) 36 inches long and 22 lllches WIde. The ::enter section of the bed or table between the rolls IS 8 inches wide and heavily ribbed to absorb vibration. It is 12 inches deep and supported between the four ways, with take-up gibs, on two heavy elevating screws of 1%" diameter. The bed is raised and lowered by means of a double set of bevel gears through an independent set of bevel gears and a 16" hand wheel at the front of the machine. Thus the movement of the bed up or down for change of thickness of planing maintains its parallelism with the cutterhead at all positions. FULLY ENCLOSED - SAFE - ACCESSIBLE It is only necessary to remove the shaving hood for grinding the knives. Operating adjustments can be m~de with the guards and hood in place. All guards and SIde guard plates are easily removable for a complete checkup of the planer. Every precaution is taken to protect the operator. Every moving part is fully enclosed. The motors and motor feed are built in the base of the machine, yet all working parts are readily accessible. ~he sectional roll and sectional chipbreaker prevent matenal, either singly or multiple fed, from "kicking back." No safer planer made. GEARS The gears are alloy steel, stub tooth, and turn on antifriction bearings. They compensate for the lower r.olls; thus they are in full mesh regardless of the depth of cut or position of the bed. The gears drive all four rolls through roller bearing chains. The steel gears in the gear box run in 600-W lubricant or equal, and are changed for the two rates of feed by means of the lever handle at the front of the machine. The cutterhead is 4 inches in diameter and carries three or four thin high-speed steel knives. The cutting circle of the knives is 4%". The cutting angle of the knives is 25. The speed of the cutterhead is 4200 R.P.M., 5000 R.P.M. available. The cutterhead is mounted in highspeed precision ball bearings. The knives are lis" x 1%" x 20" high-speed steel, and are clamped firmly in position in the cutterhead by means of headless set screws, %" x %" long, in the body of the cutterhead, and against the one piece knife bars. A "crowfoot" adjustable knife setting device is furnished for positioning the knives in the head. KNIFE GRINDING EQUIPMENT The electric Knife Grinder is built into the Planer and consists of heavy brackets and rail, a one-piece semi-steel casting. The Rail is square gibbed, and carries the ad j ustable traveling head. The motor is set vertically in the traveling head, and carries a 2%" diameter cup-wheel stone, adj ustable for depth of cut, controlled by a finger wheel at the top. The motor is 1;6 H.P., 3450 R.P.M., and is moved transversely by hand. The motor is lifted from the rail when replacing the shaving hood. The cutterhead, during the process of knife grinding, is locked in position by means of a Knife Indexing Block fastened by a thumb nut on the top of the Pressure Bar. The lip of the spring is held under the edge of the knife by means of a counterweight. The Device is adjustable for different grinding bevels.
KNIFE JOINTING The Knife Jointing Head fits over the grinding stone and is locked onto the lower end of the motor by means of a set screw. The Jointer Head carries a stone 1/2" x 1" x 3". A Traverse Handle is furnished for convenient and safe operation. SECTIONAL INFEED ROLL This is an all-steel roll; a positive drive in either direction. The sections are cushioned against shock by %" diameter rubber rings. The drive shaft is IV2" diameter and carries steel wings. The outer ring sections are steel, 3V2" diameter, 2%1," wide, corrugated on the outside, and each section is splined on the inside to receive the driving wings. The rubber ring inserts, two for each section, keep them central, and allow independent yield of 1,4"... a strong, powerful, efficient roll. PRESSURE BAR WITH INDEPENDENT END ADJUSTMENT The Pressure Bar or Shoe d irectl y back of the cutterhead is steel of heavy cross section, and the bottom of the shoe is finished to a mirror surface. This bar has independent end adjustment, and under the adjusting screws are coil springs, also adjustable for the right tension to hold the stock solid to the bed while passing through the machine. SMOOTH ROLLS The three smooth rolls, all positively driven, are made of steel, finished and ground, 3-7/16" diameter. All the rolls run in anti friction roller bearings, enclosed and oil lubricated. SECTIONAL CHIPBREAKER The Sectional Chipbreaker Frame is a one-piece Steel bar 2%" deep and I" wide, carrying vertical adjusting screws at each end; also coil spring tensioned at each end for vertical movement of the entire Chipbreaker. The sixteen sectional shoes are onepiece steel, 114" wide, hardened for long wear. The round stem of each section carries a coil tension spring. Each section is adjustable from above and allows 14" independent yield. A strong Sectional Chipbreaker is very important, as every piece of multiple feeding is held solid to the bed, and on wide boards all the sections of the Chipbreaker press equally its entire width. POSITIVE FEEDS The two rates of feed, 20' and 30' per minute, or available: 30' and 45', are provided as shown at the right. by a motor with two sheave pulleysone driving the Cutterhead, the other for driving the gear-box unit which runs in oil. The Variable F,eed, which is available, provides any rate of feed from 15' to 45' per minute, or, 20' to 60' per minute. This is a Roto-Cone drive through a Worm and Gear Reduction Unit, driven by a 11/2 H.P., 1800 R.P.M. Motor, enclosed in the base of the machine. STANDARD EQUIPMENT One set of Knives; wrenches; grinding wheel stone; Indexing Device; Knife setting attachment; and counterweight.
