Constructing Block 3. Use a log cabin method to make a portion of Block. Sew (1) 1-3/4 x 3-1/4 H rectangle onto the side of (1) 3-1/4 D square. Sew (1) 1-3/4 x 4-1/2 H rectangle onto the top of the unit. Press seams open. 4. Using the same method as in Step 3, sew (1) 3-1/4 x 4-1/2 E rectangle and (1) 3-1/4 x 7-1/4 E strip onto the unit made in Step 3. Press seams open. (See diagram for fabric placement). 5. Using the same method as in Steps 3 and 4, sew (1) 1-3/4 x 7-1/4 H strip and (1) 1-3/4 x 8-1/2 H strip from onto the unit made in Step 4. Press seams open. (See diagram for fabric placement). Repeat to create (24) units. Trim to 8-1/2. MKE (24) 6. Create strip set units by sewing the long side of (1) 8-1/2 x 3 H strip onto the long side of (1) 8-1/2 x 3 G strip. Press seams toward G. Repeat to create (48) units. (Please note: Create (24) strip set units with Fabric G on the right and (24) with Fabric G on the left.) MKE (24) MKE (24) HST = Half Square Triangle 3
7. Using the 5-1/2 H squares with a drawn diagonal line, lay the square on the top corner of each strip set unit. The diagonal line should meet with the top corner of Fabric G. Sew along the drawn line and trim the outermost excess fabric to 1/4. Press seams outward. 8. Create (48) units. (Please note: create (24) units with Fabric G on the right, and (24) units with Fabric G on the left). See diagram for fabric placement. MKE (24) MKE (24) 9. Using all units created in Steps 3-8 and HST units using Fabrics H and B, sew together Block using the Block diagrams. Press seams open. Create (24) Block s. Trim to 13-1/2. Constructing Block B 10. Lay (1) 5-1/2 square onto the top corner of (1) 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 H rectangle, RST. Sew along the drawn diagonal line on Fabric. Trim the outermost excess fabric to 1/4 and press seams outward. Repeat to create (48) units. (Please note: create (24) units with the triangle in the upper left corner and (24) units with the triangle in the lower left corner, as shown below). MKE (24) MKE (24) 11. Sew (1) 9-1/4 D QST and (1) 9-1/4 F QST, RST, ensuring that the longest edges of the QST face outward creating the corner of Block B. Finished size should be 8. 12. Sew (1) 8-7/8 G HST to the unit sewn in Step 11 to create a square. Trim to 8-1/2. Repeat to create (24) units. MKE (24) 13. Using all units created in Steps 10-12 and HST units using Fabric H and C, sew together Block B using the Block B diagrams. Press seams open. Create (24) Block B s. Trim to 13-1/2.
