How to communicate and interact with other networks - joint activities Dr Órlaith Ní Choncubhair Teagasc and FACCE ERA-GAS Consortium Manager ERA-LEARN Workshop Berlin, 24-25 September 2018 The project receives funding from the European Union s Horizon2020 Research & Innovation Programme under grant agreement No 696356.

Why collaborate with other networks? Reduce fragmentation and duplication of efforts Share costs Create networking structures Open to the World Broader geographic coverage Scientific impact

ERA-NET Cofund for Monitoring & Mitigation of Greenhouse Gases from Agri- and Silvi-culture 19 consortium partners from 13 Member States/Associated Countries Initiated by FACCE-JPI, Joint Programming Initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change May 2016 April 2021

+ FACCE 2016 ERA-GAS Joint Consortium Call

Two approaches for interacting with other networks: 1. Engage in close cooperation from the start 2. Build linkages with relevant networks during the lifetime of the ERA-NET

1. Engage in close cooperation from the start ERA-NET SusAn - Sustainable Animal Production Two independent ERA-NETs, however: Timing closely aligned Deep thematic synergies => Strongly integrated from the start

Areas of Synergy

Result Additional Activities Co-organised two Joint Workshops, together with ICT-AGRI 2 2018 Joint Call launching soon Potsdam Nov 2016 Dublin Feb 2018

2. Build during the lifetime of the ERA-NET: Example A Genesis: Involvement of New Zealand in our 2016 Joint Call 51 member countries 17 Partner Organisations 4 Research Groups 20 Science Networks Over 3000 scientists involved Fellowships, technical workshops, guidelines, databases

- a new joint initiative between FACCE ERA-GAS and the GRA Aim: to enhance the outputs and impact of the funded FACCE ERA-GAS projects by opening them up to participation from GRA member countries, where there is mutual interest and benefit Resourced separately by GRA members Existing contractual arrangements unchanged

Result Response not as strong as hoped However 1 FACCE ERA-GAS project now expanding to include data from SE Asia & Latin America (CEDERS Plus) Looking to expand a 2 nd project Awareness and linkages created with funders across the globe potential partners in the 2018 Joint Call

2. Build during the lifetime of the ERA-NET: Example B Information and Communication Technology and Robotics for Sustainable Agriculture ICT-AGRI 2 23 Partners 16 Countries

Result Joint Call for transnational research projects integrating Novel technologies, solutions and systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in animal production systems

Conclusions What have we learned? Interactions with other networks have been hugely beneficial for FACCE ERA-GAS Shared resources (expertise, time, contacts) Optimal use of finances Helped us to widen the impact of our activities incl. geographically, scientifically Build durable cooperation for the future

Conclusions What have we learned? Very positive if you can integrate from the start Be innovative Invest time in building relationships Be flexible + Connection with FACCE-JPI to ensure alignment with strategic goals and to feed back into JPI s activities
