The Two Rivers Photography Club - Newsletter Founded: June 2010 website: www.2rpc.com No. 3 April 2011 Greetings to all Perhaps Mother Nature will awake from the depths of winter and bless us with signs of spring. If you haven t already, it is time to check out your equipment and prepare for warmer weather photography. Are you planning a major trip? Prepare your cameras ahead of time. Be sure your camera s sensor is free of spots. Why wait until you download your images, only to find blemishes that you have to clean up on every photo? For stubborn areas you may want to seek assistance (i.e. Beyond the Print). The Two Rivers Photography Club has made a lot of progress and we are not yet a full year old. Many tasks have been completed, with more still in the wings. The web site is great and Chris Rollo deserves a huge Thank You for all her work to create a wonderful site. There is work going on to devise a financial process that will be used for all monetary dealings and will enable us to print out the information required to file a report with the IRS. Some of these steps are very new to us and Jeff Moore has volunteered to provide guidance to Patsy Nash-Jones in setting up the appropriate formats with Quick Books. Other items in the wings: information to be complied to complete our Not-for-Profit application, consultation with a lawyer, and the creation of a Facebook page for TRPC. Input from the membership is important. Ideas and suggestions are welcome. Can you think of new topics for the Saturday winter classes for 2012? Your board of directors is constantly looking forward. We are looking toward possible presenters for the 2012 Teach-In. The Fall Photo Class dates are set and the class info flyer is ready and on the club web site. Most of the 2011 2012 schedules of meeting dates are complete. This years Teach-In 2011 featured Lindsey Adler. It was a big success thanks to the efforts of Bill Baburchack who coordinated the event and the support of the members who attended. Lindsey came through the Roberson Club as a student, photographed with the pros at national meetings, went on to college in Syracuse, launched a successful career in photography and also has authored two books.. Hope to see you at the End of the Year dinner at Endwell Greens May 6, 2011 for a wonderful evening to include announcements of the winners, class promotions and great fellowship. TRPC Bus trip To PHOTOPLUS EXPO 2011 October 29, 2011 Jacob Javits Center - New York City The F/Stop The F/Stop is the official newsletter for the Two Rivers Photography Club of Binghamton, NY. It is published three times a year (Sept/Dec/Apr) and can be read on-line at the club s web site at: www.2rpc.com Articles, photos and announcements are welcome and can be submitted to the editor prior to the publication dates as follows: September 1, 2010 December 1, 2010 April 1, 2011 All submissions are subject to the f/stop editor, TRPC Officers and Board of Directors approval. Editor: Pete Kofira Jr. mrpetek@stny.rr.com Staff writers: Geri Hall Kathi Hunt May Lou Shapinas The TRPC Bus Trip to the 2011 PhotoPlus Expo and Trade Show at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City is planned for Saturday October 29, 2011. The club is announcing this trip early so members can have ample time to plan for this event and also so the club can secure the larger bus for the trip. If you went last year, due to only a small number of people signing up, we had to take a 30 passenger mini-bus to the Expo. Although this was adequate for our needs a larger bus, a 47 passenger bus, is preferred but we need a greater number of pre- paid people to commit in order to rent the big bus. With the first club meeting of the new season not until September 23, 2011 the club needs to get the word out early and secure the bus no later than September 1, 2011. Staring in early summer emails will be sent out, as well as information on the club web site about the bus trip with full details of the cost and trip itinerary. We will try to keep the price in the $45/50 range as in previous years. This is a great experience and something well worth attending. Don t Miss It! Get Club On the members Bus who had pictures on display for the show were: Bill Babruchak, PASS Nancy NOW: Bas- Bas- GET YOUR FREE EXPO mann You MUST register Patricia for a FREE Bonamo, entrance Sandra pass Kirker, into the Pete show Kofira by using Jr., the on-line form at: Grant www.photoplusexpo.com LaBarr, John Rehak, Debra If you Rockefeller, don't have a pass you will be charged a fee at the door. The deadline for the Cindy Ruggieri, Carol Saggese, Mary Lou Shapinas, and Helga Stein pre-registration for the FREE pass is October 15, 2011 The web site also offers some great planning tools to maximize your experience at the show. 2

TRPC Saturday Classes Vestal Public Library: The club concluded another successful series of five Saturday classes at the Vestal Public Library over the winter months. Dave Williams makes a point during his Q & A session on Photoshop / Elements class Nancy Basmann s class was full of attendees ready to use their computers to learn HDR. Peter Shell explains the images he took with a technique called Painting With Light. Club members that attended the HY-JINX had a wide variety of new and interesting setups to photograph from translucent flowers, water reflections, black light-neon objects to the ever friendly and cooperative model Rebecca,Pat Bonamo s beautiful golden retriever. 3

The picture is of a Cooper's Hawk taken during a snowstorm in her backyard. The article and picture will be published in the Spring/Summer edition of the magazine. Cont d on next page 4

TRPC Member News: cont d Cindy Ruggieri Had a photo essay entitled The Sweetest Month published in the Feb/Mar 2011 issue of Country Magazine. Cindy s article and pictures depicted the Mom & Pop maple syrup industries that are abundant in New York State. Cindy is a regular contributor to the magazine and has many of her stories published. Pete Kofira Jr Delaware based entertainer Mike Truitt (Plain Slice Mike) is using another of Pete s images of him for his latest album cover to be released in May 2011. Pete met Mike on the Ocean City Boardwalk a few years ago where Mike performs during the summer months. In his younger days, Mike performed with the Lynard Skynard Band and can be heard on some of the earlier tracks on Fleetwood Mac albums. Now married with a family, Mike is content with being the pastor of a small church in Delaware, performing on the OC Boardwalk and releasing the occasional album of his mix of gospel, blues and folk music. Barry Biddle - Won 2 nd place in the club s Salon competition with his image Floral Bubbles. Barry took the picture at the club s Hy-Jinx Saturday Class at the Vestal Public Library in March. The setup was a flower in a deep plastic container with a piece of glass on top prepared with RainX and water droplets. The judges liked the uniqueness of the flower reflections in all the bubbles. TRPC Community Service Projects: Boys & Girls Club of Binghamton, NY - Club volunteers Sam Wentz, Sandra Kirker and Pete Kofira Jr. taught a beginner s photography class at the Boys and Girls club in January 2011 and will be offering another session in April. The class is an introduction to basic point and shoot cameras with some instructions on using photo edit tools. The class in April will include all the same material but will be more focused on helping the students prepare entries for an upcoming photo contest sponsored by the national Boys & Girls Club called Image Makers. Also planned for April, the volunteers will be presenting the same class for residents of the Children Home Wyoming Conference in Binghamton, NY. If you would like to get involved with projects like this or have any ideas similar to this, please contact Pete Kofira Jr. at mrpetek@stny.rr.com Legal Aid Society of Broome County - As many of you know the offices of the Legal Aid Society that were located in the Press Building were severely damaged during the Midtown Mall fire in January 2011. Casualties of the fire and water damage were also some of the mounted images that the club had provided and Legal Aid had purchased as wall hangings for their office space. Club member Nancy Basmann has been working with the director of Legal Aid to assess the extent of the damage, arrange for repair or replacement as Legal Aid instructs, and also provide additional images for them to purchase for their current offices. The additional images will come from submissions from club members with Legal Aid making the final choices. This effort is scheduled to be completed by late spring. 5

TRPC Membership: The club membership cards are now available for pickup at the meetings. Thank you all for joining and making the new club a success. Currently we have 84 members. 32 in Salon Class and 52 in Gallerie Class. Thanks to club member Cecelia Laurendeau we now have an Excel spreadsheet to help the club manage the member list. TRPC Web Site: Have you noticed all the neat things on the club s web site lately, like getting the notice out about the meeting cancellation due to the storm, the way the winning pictures magically appear on the top scroll right after a competition and the addition of more club documents and guidelines on the site? These improvements wouldn t be possible if we didn t have a dedicated and skilled webmaster like Chris Rollo. She has really made the web site current and a vital source of club news. Her skills along with some programming help from club member Jason Herne have created an excellent website for the club. And there will be more improvements coming soon. Many club members have expressed that they would like to see the print competition scores posted similar to the way the digital scores are posted. This is a challenge for both Chris & Jason as well as the Competition Committee but they have agreed to work on it hopefully with an acceptable solution for next years competitions. It may sound simple but there are many aspects of the scoring system that need to be considered. It will be a challenge for Chris, Jason and the committee to work out. Always check the club web site for the latest information about what s going on in the club. www.2rpc.com Tips & Tricks: Club member Bill Cole devised a clever way to add memory to his laptop while making it still portable. Using Velcro, Bill utilizes two 500 GB Passport hard drives for off-line storage and to keep the majority of his high meg programs. This keeps the laptop s main hard drive and memory free of clutter allowing for faster processing times. TRPC Help and Education Tools: The club s Calibration Monitor is available for members wishing to check and calibrate their home monitor systems. (not recommended for laptops) Monitor calibration is strongly recommended to insure that what you are seeing on your monitor is what actually will be seen when your image is projected by the club s digital projector for competitions. The club also has a CD disk available for loan that has great instructions for Photo Shop and Elements users. The disk contains step by step and visual tutorials on most of the functions of these programs plus a compete list of keyboard shortcuts. Also available are 2 video disks from last year s Saturday classes on Digital Framing by Grant La- Barr and A Overview of Photoshop by Dave Williams. Contact: Bill Wandling waw49@aol.com will be coordinating the loan out of these items. 6
