Bertha Ophelia Jones Born June 20, 1896 Moved with her family from Rock Hill to Wewahitchka, Florida in early 1900s. Came to Blountstown around 1914 to attend business school. Employed by Sam Atkins, Clerk of the Court in the old Courthouse building. Employed by Attorney Thomas C. Ray from 1916 to 1931as Secretary and Abstract Clerk. Married Joel M. (Bud Joe) Atkins March 3, 1916 Employed as Secretary to Attorney and Senator Marion B. Knight from around 1935 until her retirement approximately 1974. "Miss Bertha" died October 28, 1976. Bertha J. Atkins Vonnie Traylor Duke Born August 31, 1921 in Calhoun County, Blountstown, Florida. Graduated from Blountstown High School. Began employment with Calhoun County in 1957 by working part-time with the County Judge. From 1958 to 1971worked part-time for the County Judge, Tax Collector, and Sheriff. In 1971 started full-time with W. A. Ray as his Deputy Tax Collector. In 1981was elected as Calhoun County's first female Tax Collector and reelected in 1985. Completed certification courses for Tax Collector at University of Florida giving her the honor of being Calhoun County's first State Certified Elected Officer. Married to M.J. Duke, they have three children, Lawane, Jerane and Ladon. All three have made Blountstown and Calhoun County their home.
M & B Railroad, 1910 The M & B Railroad played an important role in the history of Calhoun County. Passenger service was available on the M&B until the early twenties. Freight service, and for a time mail service, continued until 1972 when the train ceased its operations. Welcome Home Friends Jerry Guilford Construction Emory Bridges Mr. Emory Bridges was born November 24, 1905 in Worth County Georgia. His parents were James Edward Bridges and Mary Lila Webb Bridges. His family moved to Calhoun County in 1916. In 1923 he married Verna Williams and their children are Lionel, Charlie Cook, Bruce and Patricia Ann. Mr. Bridges served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1949 until 1950. He served as Calhoun County Tax Assessor from 1960until 1976. Mr. Bridges would like to thank the people of Calhoun County for their vote and support through the years.
