This tutorial will show students, teachers and parents what steps they can take to protect their personal information on a social networking site, such as Facebook. After viewing this tutorial, the learner will be able to review and update their Privacy & Security settings on Facebook to protect their personal information. This will also provide the learner an idea of what he or she may want to update on other social networks, such as Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, etc. Social Networking Privacy & Security Social networking is a great way to keep in touch with friends, family, and coworkers, but what about the people you don't know viewing your personal information? Why are they doing it and what are they doing with it? 1
Privacy Shortcuts First, select "Privacy Shortcuts" at the upper right hand corner of your device. 2
Privacy Shortcut Menu Then select "Privacy Checkup" for a quick and easily understandable way to view and edit your privacy settings and other helpful information. 3
Privacy Checkup: Posts Next, select the drop down menu to choose who can see your posts. It's up to you, and remember if your boss or a friend's parents are Facebook friends, you may want to use discretion on what you post. 4
Privacy Checkup: Apps Then select any of the Apps you have listed on your Facebook page and view and edit who can see them. 5
Privacy Checkup: Profile Under "Profile" you can view and edit who can see your (1) phone #, (2) email addresses, (3) birth year and (4) hometown. I have all set to "Only Me", except for my Facebook email address and my hometown. I would love to let everyone know my full birth date so I can get extra presents and blessings on my birthday, but I really don't want someone to steal my identity. 6
Complete Privacy Checkup Read more about your Privacy & Facebook or you may close the window to get back to your home page and access a separate window to view and edit even more preferences. 7
Facebook Privacy Basics Read more about Facebook privacy basics to further understand what your best options may be to keep your personal information protected. Next, we will look at another way to access your Privacy & Security settings. 8
See More Settings First, select the same button you selected previously to view "Privacy Checkup", but this time, select "See More Settings". 9
Privacy Settings & Tools: Privacy On this page, think about who you want to see your posts, who can send you a friend request, and who can look you up. 10
Privacy Settings & Tools: Security This page allows you to view and edit multiple settings, such as Login alerts & approvals, App passwords and even who you would want to manage your Facebook account if something happens to you. In addition, you can even deactivate your account. 11
Privacy Settings & Tools: Timeline & Tagging Under this page, you can view and edit who can post on your timeline, which I will not allow unless I approve it, first. Wouldn't it be embarrassing if your Sister posted a picture of you as a baby, covered in spaghetti or what about a picture of you with personal information in the background or even a post with the geolocation of the photo available to others who may see that great new car in your driveway, and can now figure out exactly where it's parked? Privacy Settings & Tools: Blocking On this page, you may "Block" others from accessing your page and contacting you, along with app invites and other requests. I think these options are good if you do not 12
want to receive additional friend requests from people that could cause you harm and annoyance. 13
Easy as Pie Remember, be safe and protect your personal information from unauthorized people and Apps. Happy Social Networking! 14
