The research includes articles, correspondence, birth and death certificates, cemetery records, muster rolls, wills, newspaper clippings, and pedigree charts. Puryear was a history enthusiast who specialized in Tennessee and Virginia state history. Therefore, numerous photocopied articles on topics such as the Cumberland Compact, John Donelson, Morgan s Riflemen, John Cotten, Lord Dunmore s War, and the Battle of the Bluffs are included. Puryear also edited Border Forays and Adventures: From the Manuscripts of Lyman Copeland Draper and the Wisconsin Historical Society by Lyman Copeland Draper. According to his obituary in the Tennessean, he served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954 and received his B.A. from Vanderbilt University in 1957. He was the Executive Assistant to Nashville Mayor Beverly Briley, and became Treasurer of the Nashville Metropolitan Government until his retirement in 1996. Puryear published Border Forays and Adventures, a chronicle of the frontier stories of the historian Lyman Draper, in 2006. He died on December 18, 2010. He was buried at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Nashville, Tennessee. Organization/Arrangement of Materials Collection was kept in the original order in which it was donated.
