Cnclusin: All participants advancing t State (8 participants) are the Challenge Champins. PARTICIPANT MATERIALS All participants must be prvided with the fllwing materials fr all runds f the cmpetitin: CEF s cmpetitin versin f the peridic table. Other peridic tables are nt acceptable, as they may cntain t much r t little infrmatin Scratch paper Pencil r pen A TurningPint electrnic respnse device, labeled with the participant s name and assigned t them using the Participant List If the Organizer has chsen t use letter cards during the Champinship Rund, the devices shuld be replaced with letter cards (A,B,C, and D) during that rund B. QUESTIONS All Challenge questins are supplied by CEF in the frm f TurningPint slides. Organizers must nly use the questins and answer chices prvided by CEF. All Challenge questins are multiple-chice, with a single crrect answer. All runds are arranged in rder f increasing difficulty.
2018-2019 Yu Be The Chemist Challenge Official Cmpetitin Frmat 6 Practice & survey questins will be included in CEF s TurningPint slides. CEF will include practice questins befre Preliminary Rund 1. These test the TurningPint respnse devices and ensure that participants understand hw t use the respnse system. CEF will include survey questins at the end f Preliminary Rund 3. These questins help CEF cllect imprtant data abut the Challenge and participating students. There are n crrect r incrrect answers fr either practice r survey questins, s n pint values are assigned t these questins within the respnse system. As a result, participants scres will nt be affected by their respnses t these questins. C. QUESTION PRESENTATION Challenge questins and answer chices are prjected n a screen at the frnt f the rm as TurningPint slides using the TurningPint electrnic respnse system. The sequence fr each questin is: Mderatr reads the questin and its answer chices alud. The TurningPint Operatr starts the electrnic cuntdwn timer. All participants answer the questin simultaneusly within the specified time limit. Once the timer expires, the crrect answer is displayed and read alud by the Mderatr. If the Organizer has chsen t use letter cards during the Champinship Rund, the sequence fr that rund nly is: Mderatr reads the questin and its answer chices alud. The TurningPint Operatr starts the electrnic cuntdwn timer. Participants will select ne letter card during the specified time limit. Once the timer expires, participants will display their selected card t the judges. D. SCORING Answers are electrnically recrded, scred, and tallied in the TurningPint sftware. Participants receive ne (1) pint fr each crrect answer and zer (0) pints fr each incrrect r missing answer. If the Organizer has chsen t use letter cards during the Champinship Rund, answers during that rund will be manually recrded and tallied by the Judges. If the Judges determine a questin is invalid (due t a timer issue, upheld participant appeal, etc.), the affected questin may be excluded frm scring fr all participants. OFFICIAL SCORING RECORD: The TurningPint Operatr saves the electrnic recrd f participant answers and scres at the end f each individual rund. These saved TurningPint files becme part f the Official Scring Recrd, and must be submitted via email t CEF within 2 weeks f the Lcal Challenge cmpetitin as Stated in the 2018-2019 Official Rules.
2018-2019 Yu Be The Chemist Challenge Official Cmpetitin Frmat 7 BACKUP SCORING RECORD: As a failsafe against an electrnic failure, the Judges will create the Backup Scring Recrd by manually recrding the electrnic TurningPint scres fr each participant at the end f each individual rund using Judges Scring Sheets. Organizers must cllect the Backup Scring Recrd, at the end f the cmpetitin. These may nt be discarded until the Organizer receives cnfirmatin that the saved electrnic TurningPint files (the Official Scring Recrd) were successfully received and pened by CEF. E. RESPONSE SYSTEM Participants submit answers using the electrnic TurningPint system. Participants press the labeled buttn n the electrnic respnse device that crrespnds t the multiple-chice answer they wish t select. Participants may change an answer as many times as they wish, withut penalty. The last answer submitted befre time expires is recrded by the electrnic system as the participant s final answer. If a participant believes their electrnic respnse device is nt wrking prperly, they shuld raise their hand immediately t ntify the Judges. The Judges will determine if a device is faulty by cnsulting the TurningPint respnse data. If there is evidence that the device is nt wrking prperly, the Judges will replace the device and make scring adjustments fr that rund. F. Participant Advancement Standard Frmat Use the instructins belw t determine which participants advance t the respective next rund. Preliminary Runds - Lcal Challenges: At the end f Preliminary Rund 3, half f all participants r the number f participants advancing t the State Challenge whichever is greater, advance t the Intermediate Runds based n highest cumulative scres. If the ttal number f participants is dd, Organizers shuld rund up t the nearest whle number. State and Lcal-as-State Challenges: At the end f Preliminary Rund 3, half f all participants advance t the Intermediate Runds based n highest cumulative scres. If the ttal number f participants is dd, Organizers shuld rund up t the nearest whle number. Intermediate Runds Lcal, Lcal-as-State, and State Challenges: At the end f Intermediate Rund 2, the tp 4 participants will advance t the Semifinal Rund based n highest cumulative scres. Based n highest scres frm the Semifinal Rund alne, the 4 th and 3 rd place participants are determined, and the tp 2 participants advance t the Champinship Rund. Champinship Rund Lcal, Lcal-as-State, and State Challenges: The participant with the highest scre frm the Champinship Rund alne is the Challenge Champin. G. Tiebreaker Prcedure Standard Frmat Use the prcedures belw t determine which tied participants advance t the respective next rund. Preliminary Runds: Step 1: Participants with tied cumulative scres are differentiated by scres frm Preliminary Rund 3 alne, since it is the mst difficult f the Preliminary Runds. Step 2, Optin A: If a tie persists amng five (5) r fewer participants, allw all tied participants t advance t the Intermediate Runds. Step 2, Optin B: If a tie persists amng six (6) r mre participants, use the Preliminary Tiebreaker Rund questins ne by ne until the tie is brken. Lcal Challenge Organizers shuld prepare fr this pssibility by pre-printing tw Champin certificates. Step 2, Optin B: In a Lcal Challenge where nly ne participant will advance t the State Challenge, tied participants are differentiated by cumulative scres. The student with the highest cumulative scre frm all runds, except Tiebreaker Runds, is declared the Lcal Challenge Champin and advances t the State Challenge. If a tie persists after cnsulting the tp tw participants cumulative scres, cntact CEF fr further instructins. Step 2, Optin C: At a State r Lcal-as-State Challenge, ne Champin must be determined as each state can nly send ne participant t the 2018 Natinal Challenge. Participants answer the Accelerated Questins ne by ne until the tie is brken. Organizers must cntact CEF at challenge@chemed.rg if any Accelerated Questins are used. Step 3: If the tp tw participants in a state are still tied after all Accelerated Questins have been exhausted, cntact CEF fr further instructins. H.
