Calling all young budding artists discover a world of inspiration and creativity at Summer Art Camp! Our week long, age-appropriate classes are designed to encourage artistic expression, art appreciation, imagination, and understanding for kids ages 5 to 13. Try out new art processes and materials, explore Frist Center exhibitions, and experience original works of art. No previous art-making experience necessary! P R O G R A M D E S C R I P T I O N S AGES 5 7 Art Smarts Investigate the language of art. Campers will learn the vocabulary of art while exploring a variety of art materials and processes, including sculpture, print making, collage, painting, and more. Learn about composition, balance, line, and symmetry while creating art! Sculpture Mania! Delve into three-dimensional art. Campers will experiment with sculpting techniques and tools to assemble, carve, craft, and model a variety of sculpted art. Inspired by contemporary sculptors and their work, participants will make maquettes, model figures, and create kinetic sculpture using clay, fabric, found objects, and more. Folk Art Fun Explore art from the perspective of a folk artist. Create painted and sculpted artworks from recycled materials, construct whimsies from everyday objects, and learn about traditional & contemporary folk artists during this funky folk art journey. Complements the exhibition Bill Traylor: Drawings from the Collection of the High Museum of Art and the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. Paint-n-Play Discover how much fun painting is! Young artists will explore different kinds of painting including tempera, tie-dying, watercolor, and more. Try out unusual painting tools, explore texture, play with color, and create your own painted masterpieces! AGES 8 10 Totally Textiles Inspired by the exhibition Creation Story: Gee s Bend Quilts and the Art of Thornton Dial, campers will create modern textile art using traditional and contemporary techniques. Campers will experiment with fabric to create a variety of projects, including an appliqué quilt, a felt animal pillow, a fiber fusion sketchbook cover, and much more. Landscape Creation Discover new and innovative ways to create different kinds of landscape artwork! Focusing on the exhibition Constable: Oil Sketches from the Victoria and Albert Museum, students will learn both traditional landscape painting methods, as well as contemporary styles using a variety of tools and media including fabric, ink, paint, and photography! Make your Mark with Abstract Art! Make a statement and explore the language of modern art. Inspired by a variety of modern & contemporary artists including Louise Nevelson, Mark Rothko and Helen Frankenthaler, participants will use shape, color, and form to communicate personal stories. Art techniques will include encaustic painting, impasto painting, photo transfer, and building assemblages. Drawing FUNdamentals Explore the wonderful world of drawing. Young artists will study a variety of drawing techniques by creating still-life to self-portraits while focusing on line, shadow, form, and space. Participants will experiment with different tools and materials including Japanese ink drawings, charcoal, pastels, pen & ink, and more. 2 0 1 2 S C H E D U L E 1 4pm Sculpture Mania! Totally Textiles July 16 20 9am 12pm Folk Art Fun Landscape Creation 1 4pm Paint-n-Play Drawing FUNdamentals * The last two weeks of camp curriculum for 5 10 year olds will be a repeat of the first two weeks for this age group. AGES 11 13 Art + Environment Investigate the connections between art and the natural world! Building on the exhibitions The Industrial Sublime: Photographs of Edward Burtynsky and Constable: Oil Sketches from the Victoria and Albert Museum, young artists will create artworks connected to the environment and the natural world. Participants will examine traditional and contemporary depictions of nature, using techniques that include drawing, mixed-media collage, painting, print making, and photography. Turn trash into treasure and explore ways of using art to help save the environment! Enrollment in each summer art camp is limited to 20 participants per session. Programs fill quickly, and early registration is encouraged to guarantee space in the session of your choice. A N S W E R S T O Frequently Asked Questions: Registration Begins Feb. 6 Members Feb. 20 Non-Members WHEN YOU REGISTER: Summer camp registration opens for members February 6, 2012, and for non-members February 20, 2012. Registration will be recorded on a first-come, first-served basis using the date and times the registration forms are received. A confirmation letter will be sent after successful registration. If you do not receive a confirmation letter within three weeks after sending in registration forms, please contact the summer camp manager, Anna Chappell, at 615.744.4912. Your balance must be paid in full no later than two weeks prior to the start date of your session. If payment is not received by this date, you will forfeit your registration and deposit. Programs and dates are subject to change. The Frist Center reserves the right to cancel programs when necessary. Fees will be refunded under this circumstance. Drop-Off 8:50 a.m. Pick-Up 4:00 p.m. Art Show Every Friday 4-5 p.m. Summer Camp is generously supported in part by: Ida F. Cooney Fund for the Arts and The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee Programs are generously supported by: DAILY SCHEDULE: Please be prompt dropping off and picking up your child: morning camp begins at 9:00 a.m., and parents are encouraged to drop off their child at the Demonbreun entrance no later than 8:50 a.m. Afternoon camp ends at 4:00 p.m., and parents are encouraged to pick up their child upstairs in Studio B no later than 4:00 p.m. For parents of children who are not enrolled in the after-camp program, a $2.00 per minute late fee will be assessed for children picked up after 4:00 p.m. For pick up and drop off of campers, please park in the Frist Center s visitor parking lot and bring your ticket with you for validation. All summer camp related parking is FREE. WEEKLY SUMMER ART CAMP EXHIBITION: Campers exhibit their artwork at the Frist Center: each camp session closes with a weekly art show on Friday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Campers artwork remains at camp until the weekly art show. If your child will not attend the weekly art show, make sure to let their instructor know so he/she can send their entire portfolio of artwork home with them in advance. DRESS CODE: Campers should dress for mess. Please send your child in closed toed shoes: no flip flops. The art studios can get chilly with air conditioning in the summer: please send a sweatshirt or sweater if this is a problem. LUNCHES & SNACKS: Snacks and water will be provided for participants during their camp session. Children enrolled in the day long program (two sessions) should bring their own lunches. Supervised lunches will be held from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. PRE & AFTER CAMP PROGRAM: Pre-camp and after-camp sessions from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and/or from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. will be provided for an additional $45 per week. Space is limited. It is important to be prompt in picking up your child: A $2.00 per minute late fee will be assessed for parents who pick up their children from an after-camp session after 5:30 p.m. NEED-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS: A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. If you provide notice of cancellation one week prior to the start date of their program, 50% of your tuition will be refunded. There will be no refund for registrants who cancel within one week of their start date. In the event the Frist Center must cancel a session, due to a lack of participants, a full refund will be provided.
