A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT As my two years as President come to an end, I want to say Thank You. Thank you to Lori Bessette, Ruth Sears and Carol Garvey. Thank you to all of you who volunteered for every other position there are too many to list and not enough space to do it in. It was a wonderful two years and I enjoyed getting to know more members along the way. Thank you to Ruth Sears and her board for volunteering for the next two years. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Congratulations to Sandy Reynolds whose quilt was chosen to represent our guild at the New England Quilt Museum. I look forward to seeing it along with all the others quilts this summer. Don t forget your Challenge Quilt for the June meeting. It will be fun seeing what some of you did with your paint chip colors! You must attach your paint chips to the quilt. Just Quilts will also be vending at the meeting. Guild Opportunities Being a member of the guild means participating in decisions, projects, sharing ideas and helping each other to learn and enjoy their quilting experiences. As we head into the next two years, there are opportunities for members to meet new people, help out with our projects, participate in activities, learn new techniques and generally grow in our shared quilting lives. Here are some ways you can help the guild: Hospitality: we will need some volunteers (more fun in a group) to organize the refreshments offered at the meetings. This involves coming early to the meetings (about 6-6:15) to set up the table and put out the items brought in by other members. They also organize the list for sign-up and make sure the area is clean before leaving. You also get to socialize with everyone who comes by the table! Each month a few people are needed to supply food and water for this, so please sign up at least once during the year. Community Service: This is an opportunity to lead our efforts to support those in need in our community. In the past we have donated many items to children and families and in order to continue this, we need someone willing to organize us. The guild members will support you, we will be more productive with someone to focus our efforts. Donna Chaves, who has been doing a fantastic job at this is willing to help the next leader. Membership: Susan Vanderhoof has been working with Barbara for the past year and is willing to take over as the membership person for the guild. She would like someone to help her. This involves coming to the meetings a bit early, by 6:30, and helping to check in the people as they arrive, as well as helping Susan in any other related tasks (record keeping, membership lists,etc.) This is a great way to meet everyone and learn names to go with the faces you see each month at the meetings! Raffle Quilt: There is a group of members working on making a quilt to be raffled in the Fall of 2016, when we will be having our next Quilt Show. This quilt should travel to shops and other locations during the next year and a half, to sell tickets. This task involves organizing this trip and means you would get to visit quilt shops, maybe explore some new ones! You might even get to go to a quilt show to show it off to others! Again, a small group of friends might be good for this one! Quilt Show: This is THE BIG ONE we all look forward to the quilt show every other year. We will need a team to work on organizing this, so I hope everyone has something they can do to help out. There will be many tasks involved, and there s sure to be something you can do to help the next show be the best yet. Initially, we need a chairperson (or two) to lead, and we will need people to do advertising, printing, decorating, hanging the quilts and taking them down, registrations, and many more committees that you will be hearing more about as we head into Fall. If you have an interest in leading one of these or helping out, please let Ruth know as we begin to plan for this. Many of our members have done this show many times, some are new to this. We will help you learn what needs to be done and hope everyone is able to participate in some way. By the way, I hope you are all working on some quilts to put in the show! There may be other opportunities I have forgotten, so please feel free to bring them up to me. If you want to let me know what you are interested in doing, email or call me or talk to me at the June meeting. Hope to see you there. As we take a break for the summer, I hope you will think about how you can become an active member of the Quilters by the Sea. Keep your eyes open for ideas for the show, ways to teach others what you know, share your projects. Quilters by the Sea Meeting Minutes May 7, 2015 ~ St. Philomena School, Portsmouth, RI Meeting was called to order at 7:10 PM. Announcements: Tonight we will vote for a quilt to represent the Quilters by the Sea at the New England Quilt Museum this summer. The new officers for the next 2 years will be presented. Reminder that the quilt challenge is due in June, when we will choose winners. Ninigret Quilters are inviting members to participate in a class on June 13th for $35. Members interested should see Allison Wilbur for details. Treasurer: Carol announced the balances in accounts. Some expenditures include storage and Nancy Chong bills from her visit in April. Membership: We had 57 members present and 5 guests. We welcome new member Sharon Wilson from the April meeting. The guests were Suzanne Monroe, Karen McCann, Meredith, Nancy Devillers, and Ann Green. Hospitality: The committee asked for a few volunteers to bring items for the last meeting. Community Service: Donna is still collecting placemats for the Meals on Wheels. She showed a quilt made and donated by Tina Fox. Shop Hop Bus Trip: The bus is almost full. If you haven t paid, please send money to Susan Rood. Winners: BOM: Ruth Sears; FOM: Marilyn Bunnewith. Door prizes went to Tina Fox and Karen Jameson. Show and Tell: Items were shared by Lori Bessette, Carol Garvey, Bridget Murphy, Aggie Keeney (who donated 2 quilts to community service!), Laurel Niemi, Beverly Poole, Kelly Neeley (another donation to community service and two others), Maria Ferreira, Colleen Craveiro, Jean Drooger, and Jennie Nestlerode with Carol Brierley, who worked with Jennie on a quilt. Lots of variety and it s good to see so many people sharing their work. Other: Debbie Timby and Jean Conwell will be vending their mittens at the Wool and Fiber Fest at Coggeshall Farm in Colt State Park on Saturday, May 16th from 9-4. Knit One Quilt Too will offer guild members a 20% discount in June. Program: Nancy Messier, a former art teacher in Barrington and quilter showed her Art Quilts. She also makes more traditional full size quilts, but these were all 13 X 13 and showed various techniques including using photography, paint, thread painting, layering of fabrics, discharge (a technique that works similar to bleach where you apply a paste and when you wash it out the color is removed). Some of these were made in response to challenges she shared with a group of 9 friends who challenge each other to try different things in their quilting. She was willing to pass the small quilts around so we could hold them and see the techniques up close. She also answered questions about her work throughout the presentation.
