Rotary is Service Above Self Atonement It was Monday, September 28, 2009, and President Jan Rhees blessed our meeting with thoughts of the holy day of Yom Kippur, when we close the book on last year and start the new year fresh, each of us enriched by our Jewish heritage.going from the sublime to the notso-sublime, Jim Hallett (undersigned) noted the upcoming playoffs involving both the Dodgers and Angels and, lest we get too confident, reminded us of the experience of Casey at the Bat.Paul Allman resurrected the ancient club welcome song, with mystified new members mumbling along.we welcomed our visitors, including an Australian. We sang Happy Birthday to Bob Stephenson.and Anne Konie, a member of the new Leadership Manhattan Beach class, joined in presenting a check in support of LMB to Francie Seckinger, with our own Paul Allman and Kathleen Terry joining in. Santa Rosalia Jay Harkenrider introduced us to Caitlin Sappington, Vice President of Mira Costa Interact and a member of the Baja Club at Costa, which sends ten local kids to Santa Rosalia every February and hosts ten Santa Rosalia kids here locally every summer. The Baja Club, the Interactors, the Manhattan Beach Fire Department, and the Sister City Committee have joined together with Manhattan Beach Rotary to facilitate relief for Santa Rosalia, recently battered by Hurricane Jimena. Supplies have been collected and are being sorted and inventoried and readied for delivery. And guess who from our club pitched in last Saturday? The human hurricane (the good kind) who seems to be everywhere, our own President Jan, of course. Happy Dollars and More Deb Robertson shared with us the Women s record sky dive 181 women from 31 countries in Perris, fundraising for the City of Hope and breast cancer research, raising $900,000 and counting see www.jumpforthecause.com... Roger and Patty Civalleri are among the leaders of an October expedition to Bahia de Los Angeles on the Sea of Cortez to tag whale sharks, explore Indian cave paintings, and learn more about shark conservation through their organization,

Rotary is Service Above Self Iemanya Oceanica. (Harris Bass has already signed up as a leader of their fundraising arm called Mako Faction. Mako Faction is a group of misunderstood alpha predators like sharks the group is composed of attorneys.)..vinny Fazzino shared his video, recruiting volunteers for his upcoming trip to Ensenada on behalf of two orphanages, Gabriel House Special Needs Facility for handicapped kids and Casa Hogar Vocational Center. Water, Water, Everywhere Former Los Angeles County District Attorney Gil Garcetti has left the prosecution business and, as of 2002, taken up photography (see www.gilgarcetti.com.) He has published numerous books of his photos, including the Disney Hall, Cuba, and, most currently, his new book about water specifically, water in West Africa. He shared with us his slides, powerfully demonstrating the 4-5 mile (each way) walks taken by women and girls to carry 5-7 gallon containers of water to their villages, at great physical cost and to the detriment of any possibility the girls have for getting an education. His photos have recently been displayed at the United Nations to raise public awareness about safe water. Gil s slides also showed us solutions bringing wells to these villages. Our own Aliyah Levin has already involved us in such projects, and you just know she s talking to Gil Garcetti even as I write these words. So, on this holiest day of the Jewish year, we remembered what genuine atonement brings to the new year dedication to service. Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett
Rotary is Service Above Self Attendance & Make-ups Attendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Lindy Murrell, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club's attendance record is reported district-wide. Let's help June keep that attendance record high--report your makeup to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you're not a Board member, and it's a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make June's job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you're not sure it's a make-up--hey, tell her anyway! It s Time To Pay Your Dues Each Rotarian by now should have received their annual dues statement for the 2009-2010 Rotary year. Thank you to the 40% of the club that has already paid their dues. If you haven't, please give this matter your attention. Dues may be mailed in to the Club's post office box or handed in at the Monday morning meetings. There is an annual pre-pay option for breakfast for those members who wish to take advantage of this convenience. Please note that payments from last year do not roll into the current year. If you wish to use this option please remit payment, or notify Matt Peck our Treasurer, so that our records are current. Lastly, as a reminder, each member (other than those who do the annual pre-pay) who attends a Monday meeting is expected to pay at least $5 at the door. Those members wishing to partake of the bountiful Marriott breakfast buffet pay $10. Lastly, tickets for our award winning raffle are $2. Please remember to stop at the Treasurer's desk when you arrive on Monday mornings so that each member pays their fair share.
