Firefighter Switch with Arc Faut Detection PVSEC... Description The term firefighter switch indicates a remotey controabe DC Disconnect with which the DC side of a photovotaic system in proximity of the modues (or directy beow the cabe outet) can be disconnected. The disconnection of DC ines within a buiding ensures maximum safety for persons. The integra arc faut detection with UL 699B approva aows detection of hazardous DC arc fauts in the PV system and immediatey trips the DC Disconnect by means of the ow votage trip modue. Disconnection of the circuit heps to extinguish seria arc fauts aready before any safetycritica situations can arise. DC arc fauts can be caused by defective components such as connectors, cabes, PV modues and junction boxes due to ageing, anima bite, heavy snowfa or mounting and instaation errors. The integra arc faut detector now aows reaisation of fire prevention in photovotaic systems. Remote disconnection and reconnection provide ease of reset and thus high system avaiabiity even in arge roofmounted soar instaations. In norma operating condition, the system wi automaticay restart after an inadvertent shutdown, e.g. due to a brief suppy votage dip. The ETA technoogy of arc faut detection significanty enhances the safety of photovotaic systems. Firefighter Switch with Arc Faut Detection PVSEC... Function arc faut detection The arc faut detector approved to UL 699B detects seria and parae DC arc fauts by means of a detection agorithm taiormade for photovotaic appications. The circuit disconnection by means of the Disconnect heps to extinguish seria arcs. Because of the random nature of arc fauts with different types of arcs (seria, parae, etc ) we tested the PVSEC with various rectifiers of major manufacturers in various appication situations to achieve the highest possibe arc faut detection rate (> pease contact ETA for the atest information on compatibiity with rectifiers). Using the ETA technoogy for arc faut detection significanty increases the safety and reiabiity of PV systems. Operating contros on the arc faut detector: Push button Test After pushing the button Test the PVSEC carries out a sef test. During the sef test the LEDs ON and ARC ight simutaneousy. When the sef test is competed successfuy, the PVSEC opens the oad contacts( position 0 ) and ony the LED ARC remains it. Duration sef test: 0. to 4 seconds. Push button Reset By hoding the Reset button for at east 0. seconds the PVSEC is reset to norma duty after an arc detection or a positive sef test. During this process the LEDs ON and ARC go out. After the subsequent startup phase the oad contacts are switched on again and the dispay ON ights green. Duration of the runup phase approx. 4 seconds Note: Humidity in the instaation area (e.g. caused by condensation) must be avoided. When instaed in encosures with a high protection cass, vent hoes or pressurisation eements have to be used to avoide condensation. In the appication it has to be ensured that each PVSEC is suppied with min. A aintenance: An eectrotechnica functiona test to ensure system avaiabiity shoud be carried out reguary, e.g. annuay. Side switch with ockout feature anua operation of the PVSEC on site Actuating the side switch into the direction of the arrow trips the switch eectricay by way of the undervotage reease modue. When the side switch is in position "0, the PVSEC is both mechanicay and eectricay ocked. Remote actuation is then no onger possibe. The switch can be protected against inadvertent operation in the OFF condition by means of a padock with a shacke diameter of 3 4.3 mm. Lockout feature Indicator LEDs on the arc faut detector: LED ON ights green: The PVSEC is running on norma duty. Load contacts are cosed ( Switching position I ). LED ARC ights red: Either an arc has been detected or a successfu sef test has been carried out. The oad contacts of the PVSEC are opened ( Switching position O ). LEDs ON and ARC ight simutaneousy: The device carries out an interna sef test. Appying suppy votage or pressing the reset button triggers the sef test. Working principe The PVSEC is generay switched on by means of the integra remote contro. The PVSEC... is aways switched off by tripping the ow votage reease modue. The PVSEC... is automaticay switched on after the startup phase by appying the suppy votage to the terminas and except when: the side switch is in position 0 an arc faut was detected In case of an interruption of the suppy votage the PVSEC wi automaticay be switched off. Detection of an arc: In the switching position 0, switching off happens immediatey and the LED ARC ights red. Before reset the root cause of the faiure shoud be identified and remedied in the system. After detection of an arc, resetting the PVSEC requires the foowing: push the reset button for at east 0. sec. A seftest and the startup phase foow briefy interrupt the suppy votage (on site or remotey). Safety function After 0 operations within one minute type PVSEC wi be bocked for minutes. If another 0 operations foow immediatey afterwards, type PVSEC...A wi be bocked entirey. 03/4 www.eta.de 89
