October 2017 P a g e 5 Friends Recall Margaret McCaughey Trailblazing County Clerk By Matt Leader, Livingston County News, September 27, 2017 Margaret McCaughey, a former Livingston County Clerk who died Sept. 19 at the age of 97, is being remembered by friends and co-workers as a tireless public servant who never hesitated to roll up her sleeves and get to work. I found her just to be very concerned about the community and serving the public, said former Livingston County Administrator Nick Mazza, who worked alongside McCaughey from 1989 to 1994. She was truly, truly a very dedicated public servant. Born in 1920 in Geneseo, McCaughey started working for the county in 1942. She worked her way up through the County Clerk s office before being elected County Clerk in 1974. McCaughey s overwhelming victory she garnered 11,856 votes to opponent John Morgan s 6,733 made her the first woman ever elected to a county position...
