S ports Section B Wednesday, December 12, 2012 The McLeod County Chronicle GSL wins opener, 80-63 Maass leads team effort with 26 points, 7 assists, 6 boards Lee Ostrom Sports Editor Ethan Maass led the way with 26 points, and three of his Glencoe-Silver Lake teammates also posted double-figure totals, as the Panthers won their long-anticipated basketball opener 80-63 last Friday (Dec. 7) at Watertown-Mayer. GSL, 7-20 one year ago, played hard, pushed pace and showed good depth against its Section 5 (Class AA) rivals, who lost for the second time since topping Dassel-Cokato in its Nov. 30 opener. GSL head coach Robb DeCorsey, who had fed his boys a steady diet of drills and scrimmages since the Monday before Thanksgiving, said they were chomping at the bit for a game. Senior guard Travis Rothstein saw it, too. After three long weeks of practice, he said, we were ready to show people what we ve got this year. What did the Panthers show? A team effort, senior forward Trent Draeger said. In particular, Draeger thought GSL s man-to-man defense something he said DeCorsey stresses every day in practice was key. Everybody who played made positive contributions, DeCorsey said. *** About nine minutes in, Watertown- Mayer closed to within 21-20 on guard Jacob Grotbo s trey his first, and his team s fourth. However, the Royals came away empty 0-for-3 from the field, 0- for-2 from the line, with three turnovers on its next five possessions. At the same time, GSL was tallying 12 points, including a four-point play (three-point shot plus a free throw) from Maass, an All-Wright County Conference point. Senior forward Brandon Ebert, who started the 12-0 spree with a mediumpost deuce, finished it by finding the netting from the side. GSL would lead by 13 for a second time, when Keaton Anderson knocked down a triple that made the score 36-23. Then, Watertown-Mayer made a move, using Grotbo s second trey and two free throws by guard Jacob Wandersee to get to within six at 38-32. But a triple by Maass and a reverse layup by sophomore forward Garrett Ober allowed GSL to go to intermission with a 43-34 advantage. *** The Panthers added the first four points of the second half two on a Draeger layup from Maass, and two on a steal and layup by Anderson, a sophomore lefty who finished with 14 points. Maass fifth triple made it 52-38 with 15:18 to go. His back-to-back driving deuces upped GSL s lead to 58-43 with 12:15 remaining. A few possessions later, the bulge became 17 when senior forward Reed Dunbar stuck a deuce from a corner of the lane. From there, the Royals fought back, getting to 62-52 on two of 6-4 junior center Luke Sandquist s 19 points. Kevin Simonson Special to The Chronicle Coming off their best-ever finish in a Don Hall Invitational, the Panther wrestlers took their talents to Andover last weekend for the annual Husky Invitational. The GSL/Lester Prairie coaching staff set a goal of finishing in the top three of 13 teams. In December 2011, the Panthers placed fifth. This year, led by four individual champions, three second-place finishers and a third, GSL/LP brought home the runner-up trophy. I thought everyone wrestled great, and we wrestled as a team. Everyone stepped it up a notch and we were able to get second, commented senior captain Mitchell Hartwig. Team champion Centennial had three champions, three seconds and three thirds. Centennial defended its team title from a year ago by scoring 225 points, compared to the Panthers 188.5. Chippewa Falls (Wis.) was a distant third with 155.5. What aided Centennial to the team title was the ability to fill all 14 weight classes and place in 13 of them. On the other hand, GSL/LP filled only 11 of the weights, with only eight of them placing. Bringing home champion medals for the Panthers were Jacob Jewett (106), Nate Tesch (138), Hartwig (152) and Dalton Clouse (195). Jewett, Hartwig and Clouse were all number-one seeds, while Tesch was seeded sixth. In Glencoe that day, Panthers will clash with Raiders in a pair of tripleheaders three games (C -squad, B- squad and varsity) for girls teams and three more for boys teams. Capping the schedule will be the varsity games; the girls game tipping off at 6 p.m., the boys at 7:30. But it s not all basketball. Throughout the day, folks will have opportunities to participate in fund-raisers that raise dollars for the Tim Orth Memorial Foundation and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Two years ago, when the tripleheaders were last played in Glencoe, all the proceeds were directed to the Tim Orth Memorial Foundation, GSL coach Cullen Ober said. He recalls about $1,500 going to Orth kids. *** GSL s holiday boys basketball tournament returns this December after a year s absence. When it was over, Draeger (12 points) said the big difference from a year ago is this team s strong team chemistry. The whole outfit seems to be clicking together. *** Watertown-Mayer graduated all five starters from its 28-3 team of last winter. Those Royals were Section 5(AA) champions losing to Litchfield in the state quarterfinals. DeCorsey had good things to say about Sandquist. The kid s tough, he said. The Royals only knocked down one trey after intermission. In the second half, we did a better job of closing out on their shooters, DeCorsey said. This is DeCorsey s second year as GSL s head coach. A huge thing, according to Rothstein, is better knowing what DeCorsey expects. Maass connected on nine of 14 shots from the floor and three of four from the line for his 26 points. He also charted seven assists, six rebounds and two steals. Anderson was GSL s top rebounder, with seven. He and Rothstein had four assists each. Greg Ober led in steals with three. GSL scored on 37 of 74 possessions, while WM tallied on 31 of 74. The Panthers were 32-for-61 from the field (seven treys) and 9-for-15 from the line. The Royals were 22-for-47 (six treys) and 13-for-24. GSL committed 23 turnovers to WM s 24. The guests converted 10 secondchance opportunities into eight points; the hosts eight into five. In all, GSL outrebounded WM, 30-27. Jewett won by fall in each of his first two matches; then beat Jake Bergeland from Centennial in the finals 7-4. Jewett currently is the state s ninthranked Class AA 106-pounder. Tesch pinned the third seed, Shawn Sura of Chippewa Falls, in the quarters; in the next round he defeated second-seeded Michael Straw from Minneapolis South, 10-3. In the finals, he faced topseeded Devon Felton from Austin. Felton was a state entrant a year ago and is currently ranked fifth in the state. Tesch scored a quick takedown and three nearfall points before giving up a reversal and two nearfall points. Moments later, though, Tesch had the reversal that put Felton on his back. Suddenly, the referee hit the mat for the fall at 1:19. Hartwig won three matches on the day with all wins coming by fall. In the finals, he beat Kyle Zerbian from Chippewa Falls in 3:47. Hartwig, who improved to 6-0 on the year, moved his career win total to 114. Currently, he is ranked third at 152. Clouse won his title at 195. Clouse barely worked up a sweat, as he recorded three falls in times of 39 seconds, 27 seconds and 1:14. Hartwig and Clouse were both champions last year. Finishing second for the Panthers were Michael Donnay (120), Brandon Richter (126) and Nick Brelje (160). Donnay was the top seed at 120 and advanced to the finals by scoring a fall in his first match and winning 9-0 in the semifinals. In the championship match, he fell 4-3 after giving up a reversal late in the third period to Danny Chiebek of St. Louis Park. Richter, the third seed, won by technical fall in a pigtail round before winning by fall in the quarterfinals and semifinals. His semifinal opponent, Erik Power from Austin, is currently ranked 10th. In the finals Richter faced top-seeded Quinn Miracle from Chippewa Falls, losing 13-4 in a physical match. Freshman Nick Brelje finished second at 160. He advanced to the finals by winning his first two matches by fall. In the finals he faced topseed Charlie Schmid of Orono and lost by fall. After going 0-3 at the GSL/LP tourney at 120, Aaron Donnay felt more comfortable at 113. Donnay won a pigtail match by pin and then faced the second seed in the quarterfinals. In a very tight match Donnay lost 8-5. This dropped Donnay to the wrestlebacks where he won three matches to finish third with a 4-1 tourney record. Also competing for the Panthers were John Williams (170), who finished 1-2, and Martin Lezama (182), who went 0-2. Chris Lemke, a second-year wrestler, finished the day 0-2 at 285 but went the distance in both matches. He came close to winning by fall in his second match, before running out of time. The Panthers hit the road Thursday for a double-dual event at Litchfield. GSL/LP will face the host Dragons in the opening round and then Dassel-Cokato in the finale. Hutchinson also will be werestling that night, but will not face the Panthers until January. On Saturday, the grapplers travel to Richfield for a dualformat tournament, where they hope to improve on last year s seventh-place finish. Lakeville North is considered the favorite. He had 26 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in GSL s 80-63 win at Watertown-Mayer. Chronicle photos by Rich Glennie Beauty and the beast The first winter storm arrived Saturday night and lasted throughout Sunday, dumping about 10 inches of snow on the ground. It created some beautiful artwork, above, when Mother Nature added her white touch to Wonder Works festive decorations at 13th Street and Hennepin Avenue. It also brought out the beasts of winter. The sound of snowblowers and snowmobiles, coming out of hibernation, resonated throughout the area even as the snow continued to fall on Sunday afternoon. Behind the snow was some of the coldest temperatures of the early winter season. Law enforcement and tow trucks also had a busy weekend. Schreifels leaves GSL Board after 4 years Rich Glennie Editor Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board member Gary Schreifels was presented with a traditional school bell Monday night for his four years on the board. His tenure ends Dec. 31 after he lost his seat on the board to newcomer Donna VonBerge in the Nov. 6 election. I had a heck of a four years, Schreifels said at the end of Monday night s meeting. It has been a blast. I m leaving (the board), but my passion (for education) hasn t changed. Schreifels went on to thank the administrators, teachers and other school staff and board members for helping him learn during his four years. It s been fun. But he also parted some advice to the new School Board. During the election, it was discussed the silence that many board members hear from the public on issues. The district, as a whole, has to communicate better with the School Board, Schreifels said. This is not an easy job (being a board member). The other side of the silence issue, he added, is that board members need to challenge the administration. Speak up and ask tough questions to make them better. I wish Mrs. VonBerge all the luck in the world, Schreifels concluded. GSL Board Chairman Clark Christianson praised Schreifels for his hard work and extensive training to become a good board member. That extra training benefitted the board and the school district, Christianson said. We reaped the benefits here. Schreifels brought experience to the negotiating table as well as his knowledge to building projects, Christianson said. We appreciate your dedication, he added. Silver Lake Winterfest activities set for Dec. 15 Alyssa Schauer Staff Writer With the holidays nearing, December is often a time for planning and more planning. The Winter Fest committee is joining tradition as they are busy organizing and preparing for the 11th-annual Silver Lake Winter Fest celebration set for Saturday, Dec. 15, beginning at noon. The Winter Fest weekend kicks off with the annual Christmas lighting contest on Friday, Dec. 14, beginning at 7 p.m. Civic Association members will be traveling throughout the community to judge Christmas lights for the annual contest. Any contestants who have won in the past two years are not eligible to win. Winners will be announced at the Winter Festival on Saturday, Dec. 15. Cash prizes will be awarded. Remember to turn on your lights! Winter Fest will then begin on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 12:30 p.m. and activities will run until 3 p.m. at the Silver Lake Auditorium. The Pola-Czesky grand marshals serve as hosts and hostesses to the event that includes live entertainment, free sandwiches, cookies, hot cider, hot chocolate and coffee provided by the GFWC Silver Lake Women s Club, and drawings for door prizes, which will be announced at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. A coloring contest sponsored by the Degree of Honor will also be held, and the Pola-Czesky Royalty will be present to help judge the contest and hand out awards. There will be horse-drawn wagon rides throughout town and photo opportunities with reindeer and Syverston s sleigh. Santa and Mrs. Claus also will be in town for a visit at the Silver Lake American Legion, and all children visiting Santa will receive a goodie bag compliments of the Legion. Topics will cover: Soil fertility: This includes N, P, K, micronutrients, soil organic matter, why these are so important to our soils, and how to better manage them. Soil chemistry: This includes cation exchange capacity, ph, bulk density, nutrient movement and storage, and water holding capacity. Soil physical properties: This includes how the soil was formed, soil structure, soil compaction and erosion. The class size is limited to 15 producers to ensure interactive learning and plenty of time to ask individual questions. This class will offer a total of seven continuing education unit (CEU) credits. They will include: 4 CEUs in soil and water, 1 CEU in nutrient management, and 1 CEU in crop management. The family members include, from left, Ben, his mother Angie holding sleeping Kate, and Lizzy. At right, Mindy Lemke and Sara Brown, working with the chamber of commerce float, were all smiles as they marched down the parade route handing out treats to the bundled up parade watchers. The parade, although short, was impressive with its many light displays on the fire trucks, floats and even people. Despite the cold weather, parade watchers lined both sides of Greeley Avenue to watch the parade, which also drew an audience inside Millie Beneke Manor. The parade ended at the impressive light display near Glencoe Regional Health Services long-term care facility. Minnesota Nice gets responses Photos courtesy Linda Krueger The postal boxes used by Linda Krueger are packed with a variety of items often hard to find for deployed military personnel, especially in Afghanistan. Linda Krueger of Glencoe continues to get letters back from deployed soldiers who have received the Operation Minnesota Nice care packages she has been sending. Krueger said the feedback has reaffirmed to her the need to continue the project as long as military personnel are deployed overseas. There have been a few others, but this one touched my heart, Krueger said of a note from Major Steve Heinz. I just want you to see the results these packages mean to the soldiers, she added. Krueger, with help from other volunteers and with growing support from area residents with donations of items and cash, has more than doubled last year s 30 packages this holiday season. Here are some replies from soldiers: ***** Ma am, Thank you for the nice package you sent me. I especially enjoyed the cookies in the tin. I remember eating them as a kid during Christmas. I am 37 years old and have been in the military since I was 17. I have a wife of 14 years and three children. I have two girls: Trinity, age 11, Sophie, age 10, and my boy, Joseph, age 5. They all live in Hinesville, Ga. I am very blessed to have a nice family. I grew up in Little Falls, Minn., and went to St. John s for college in Collegeville. This is my fourth deployment. I was in Iraq twice and now twice in Afghanistan. I am a combat engineer; so my job is finding IEDs. I have done this for the last three deployments. But now I work in the headquarters and help other units find the IEDs. Thanks again! I, too, am from Minnesota. Pretty soon Christmas will be here and you will be able to spend time with family and friends. My heart swelled when I read your letter, with Christmas on its way, and my family in Tennessee, your words just made my day! Being a Minnesota native, I still have my Minnesota pride! I haven t been to Arlington, or anywhere near there for the longest time. I went to Sibley East with Michelle (Gomez, wife of the Rev. James Gomez of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Glencoe). We were in the same class together. Some of my fondest memories are going to the movies at her family s theater. I m currently serving my fourth tour overseas; this is my first to Afghanistan. I ve served three in Iraq, and by the grace of God, made it back without a scratch. I m stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky., with the 101st Airborne Division, and I live in Clarksville, Tenn. My wife, Angie, and our two daughters, Sabrina, 15, and Celeste, 13, are anxiously awaiting my return. I ll send a couple of pictures along so you can see what we all look like. Angie is an LPN, and she works with me at Fort Campbell at one of the troop clinics. I ll have six years left until I retire at 20 years come February, and I m looking at starting my own bakery close to our home. Now that I ve rattled on, I m making a special trip to Glencoe to see Michelle, and maybe I ll get a chance to meet you face-to-face. Again, thank you so much for all of your support!
