IMPORTANT REMINDER Please inform a membership committee member AS SOON AS POSSIBLE OF ANY CHANGES in your personal information CO-PRESIDENTS CORNER Snow Birds are leaving us fast and furious, as they are anxious to return home. We have gained another new member - Susan Davis joined The Piecemakers this past week. Hope everyone will take her under their wing and be there for her. A past member, Nickie White, came back to see us. She brought a beautiful quilt she had made for her grandson for Show and Tell. We have received our assignment for the 2017 Quilt Show. We will be responsible for Basket Mania. This was our second choice, but we re sure that our chapter will do a really great job as always. There was a discussion at Executive Board about the Guild hanging some of our quilts at various recreation centers in The Villages. The Guild is in the process of checking this out, and we will advise everyone when we have more details. The cook book project is well under way. The committee received a total of 634 recipes. However the pre sales are not going as well as expected. The committee wanted pre sales of 2000 but, as of last week, they only had 98. If they don t get enough pre-sales they will return the monies back to those who pre-ordered. The Guild is going to have an annual blood drive and are in the process of checking out the details. This year s drive will be for one of our members, Nancy Meyers. She is ill and is requiring a lot of blood. The Basket Mania Funds (from the 2015 show) will be disbursed in the form of grants of $162.00 to the existing chapters at the time of the show. To receive a grant, chapters must submit a letter to the Executive Board informing them of how they will use the money. A letter has been submitted by The Piecemakers. The subject of what do we want to do as a chapter was thrown out to those members present. After a lot of discussion, nothing was really decided. This subject was presented in hopes of finding a way for all chapter members to work together. We need to encourage group involvement. (Editor s Note: E-mail your suggestions to Brenda/Wanda at addresses shown top left of this page.) Our next all day sew-in will betuesday May 12 th 2015. This would be a great day for everyone to work on charity quilts. Hope all of our Snow Birds arrived home safely, and that they will have a great summer. We will be anxiously awaiting their return in the fall. They are surely missed. Peg Tackett has had knee surgery and is in Freedom Point Rehab. We re sure she would love to hear from everyone. Her address is 1460 El Camino The Villages, FL 32159 Room 152. Have a great month, Brenda &Wanda Piecemakers Quilters 1

MEMBERSHIP PAGE MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Donna Parisi is a seasonal member of the Piecemakers from the Adirondack region in NY, and has been coming to The Villages since 2007. In 2012 they bought their own home here. Donna was originally a member of Patchwork Gardens chapter, and is a past-president of that group. She decided to become a Piecemaker after attending the Friday Quilting group and meeting some of our members. Donna is an experienced award-winning quilter who prefers hand appliqué. She designs her own quilts to display and rotate in her home, and also gives them away to family and friends. She has 2 children and 1 grandchild. Donna loves nature and the outdoors, and is a history buff. She also enjoys golfing and travel. At the April Brunch with the B s Donna gave a presentation Things to Think About When Making a Challenge Quilt. She has won awards for every Challenge she has attempted. For those of us unable to attend, Donna is sharing her expertise and Tips & Tricks. THANKS DONNA! CHALLENGE QUILTS : TIPS & TRICKS THE JUDGES ARE FLIPPING THROUGH PILES OF QUILTS, AND YOU WANT THEM TO STOP AND REALLY LOOK AT YOURS! Try to think outside the box... don t do the obvious thing Use multiple techniques... curved piecing, appliqué, embroidery, etc. Add interest by varying the fabrics used... silk, textures, bold prints Use a complimentary or focus color Use as much of the Challenge fabric in the DESIGN as possible Remember to interpret the theme! ie: If it s quilting in paradise, make sure there s a quilt, or something like a quilt in your entry Don t center your design... off center is much more interesting Use design techniques... rule of 3, odd numbers, the Golden Mean More quilting is always better than less Bury all your threads... don t knot or backstitch. Thread nests on the back are a no-no! Mitre all corners if possible Make sure quilt top fabric goes all the way to the edge of the binding Try using 2.25 binding strips instead of 2.5 for a firmer binding Mitre binding corners and sew the mitres down... front and back And last but not least... remember to have FUN. That s the whole idea! The Guild has issued a Challenge to all members. It is called The Cupcake Challenge. For $5.00 you will receive a piece of fabric with cupcakes on it. You will then make something/anything using that piece of fabric. There will be a judging and prizes later on in the summer. Your product is yours to keep. Fabric available at May Guild meeting. MAY BIRTHDAYS Darlene Bell, Norma Carlo, Barbara DeLong, Dot Favre, Mary Huber, Patti Porto, Peggy Tackett, Carla Tiling, Ann Vogel Our Very Best Wishes for a Happy Day! Piecemakers Quilters 3
