Carousels - Overlapping Slat Introduction The overlapping slat carousel is designed to re-circulate baggage through a series of rectangular shaped slats overlapped and linked to form a continuous loop. It can be used as either an arrivals or make-up carousel. Whilst the basic design of the carousel has been standardised, it is sufficiently flexible to accommodate variations in height, length and width. This is the only type of carousel that allows changes of heights within the loop configuration. Function Arrivals Carousel Baggage is loaded airside then transferred to the baggage hall for collection. Where the carousel passes through a wall, the wall opening can be fitted with a draft curtain and automatic roller shutter security door upon request. Make-up Carousel Make-up carousels typically have a galvanised or zinc plated trim and are located in the airside section of the baggage hall. Baggage is transferred from the check-in landside area to the airside via a series of conveyors which ultimately feed the make-up carousel. Baggage re-circulates around the carousel for collection by the baggage handlers. Daifuku BCS. 2017. All Rights Reserved. Version 2 Page 1 of 8
Features Flat conveying surface. Suited for both baggage reclaim and baggage make-up applications in a variety of flexible configurations. Best suited for many types of baggage applications. Is able to incline or decline to accommodate changes in elevations between airside and landside. Historically proven to be low maintenance. Satisfies global OH&S requirements and IATA design standards. Technical Data Precision moulded rectangular shaped slats are connected together utilising fabricated steel support carriages which form both the driving and support chain of the carousel. Each carriage contains a centrally located guide wheel and two support wheels. The support structure beneath the running surface contains two rows of continuous support wheels and a central guide track which control the path of and support the slats. The carousel is fitted with trim covering the support structure on both the inner and outer perimeter to provide a safe and aesthetically pleasing finish. The outer trim is typically 150mm deep with a setback toe kick to the floor. The standard inner infill trim is raised 150mm above the conveying surface to provide a guide for baggage and finished edge for the infill floor. Stainless steel or galvanised finishes can be provided for airside and landside applications. Support Carriages An endless loop and conveyor surface is created by linking together the support carriages. This endless chain allows the slats to be pop riveted in place. The carriages are fabricated mild steel weldments, jig machined to the designed pitch, then fitted with a self-aligning spherical bearing. Precision machined pins (12mm diameter guide roller stud) are used to join the support carriage assemblies. The guide roller stud screws into a tapped hole in the carriage and is locked in place with an internal star lock washer. The finished support carriage is electro galvanised to provide lasting corrosion protection and is jig tested before dispatch. At the leading end, in the centre of the support under carriage, a 50mm diameter wheel assembly is positioned to guide the carriage assembly around the carousel. The guide wheels are a high-density plastic tyre moulded onto precision sealed for life ball bearing. A machined lug is positioned in the centre of the carriage assembly just behind the guide wheel to engage with the caterpillar drive chain roller drive dogs. The gear motor is shaft mounted to transfer power directly to the drive sprockets. Dual drive chains run on two sets of matched sprockets and chain guides. These are connected by centrally located precision drive dogs that transmit driving force directly to the support carriages. As the drive unit rotates and the carousel moves forward, the trailing set of drive dogs accurately lifts into place around the tail sprocket and engages the next support carriage providing for a smooth and quiet driving mechanism. Bearings are greased for life and are maintenance free. The drive maintenance consists simply of routine checks to ensure that the drive chain is correctly lubricated and tensioned. Framework The overlapping slat carousel framework is manufactured typically in 2200mm long modules of mild steel sections and pressings. Bolted to the cross bracing for structural strength are the centre guide rails and load wheel tracks. Robust screw adjustable legs are used to support and level the cross bracings. The outer line of legs provide the attachment point for a recessed toe kick plate, which also form the bottom section of the trim skirting. The centre part of the carousel frame includes mounting locations and can have infill brackets to hold centre infill cross braces supplied as additional components for the optional infill. Panelling / Trim The overlapping slat carousel can be supplied with 2 forms of trim: For arrivals carousels, 304 stainless steel #4 brushed finish panelling. For make-up carousels, galvabond steel panelling or mild steel powder coat panelling. Powder coating in RAL standard colours is also available for airside and make-up carousel finishing. The centre of the carousel conveyor shall be provided with a panelling up stand extending vertically 150mm above the top surface of the slat. The upstand forms a guard to prevent baggage spilling into the centre of the loop and forms a finishing edge to the optional centre infill. An optional flare can be supplied to ensure that bags and parcels do not dislodge from the carousel on outer curves. Airside Panelling / Trim The airside trim is constructed from 3.0 mm galvabond mild steel or powdercoated panelling. This section of the carousel shall be fitted with trim as follows: Inner edge shall be provided with a high side, 150 mm above the slat surface and running the entire length of this section, including the curves. The outer edge of the straight and curved sections shall be provided with 150mm deep side trim located just below the underside of the slat extending down over the conveyor structure. A toe kick shall be fitted to the entire outer edge. The toe kick shall form part of the carousel trim and shall be fitted such that it is recessed behind the stainless trim from above. Powder coated mild steel is used to construct the toe kick. Butt type joins are used to join the stainless steel trim. The butt join allows for a neat, no gap finish offering passengers a professional and safe outlook when retrieving their bags.
