INFORMATION ABOUT THE VADSTENA SUMMER COURSES The aim of the Swedish Lace Association (FSS) is to keep and develop the bobbin lace making technique. Every year FSS offers a number of summer courses in bobbin lace making both for beginners and also advanced lacemakers. The courses are held at Vadstena Folkhögskola, which also offers boarding, in the unique, inspiring historical town of Vadstena on the coast of Lake Vättern. Application: At the latest April 9, 2018. Notification of acceptance will be no later than May 4, 2018. Applications submitted after April 9 will be considered if places are available. Course fees: Payable upon invoice no later than June 2, 2018. Refunds only if the course is cancelled or in the case of illness, in which a doctor s certificate is required. An administrative fee of SEK 500:- will be charged. Accommodation: Accommodation can be arranged from noon Sunday June 24, Friday June 29 or Sunday July 1 at Vadstena Folkhögskola. The school offers good hostel standards including kitchens. The rooms all have showers and toilets. Single rooms cost SEK 375:- per night, double rooms cost SEK 310:- per person per night. You can bring your own linen and towels, but it is possible to rent linen and/or towels for SEK 80:-/50:-. Please check the box on the application form if desired. The cost for accommodation and linen is paid upon invoice no later than June 2, 2018. It is not yet certain if it is possible have lunch at the school cafeteria for approx SEK 90:-/day. If you are interested in having lunch, please check the box on the application form (a checked box is binding). Qualifications for attending the courses: This is specified at each course. Participants, excluding the Childrens courses, must be 15 years old. After completed course the participants receive a diploma. For the advanced courses the participants have to hand in the work made during the course for evaluation by FSS. Those attending two one-week courses will receive a discount of SEK 600:-. Full time students with valid certificate will receive a SEK 300:- discount/course. The discounts cannot be combined. Literature and most other material for the courses can be bought in the FSS shop. Pillows and bobbins can be borrowed during the courses. Only patterns and laces by FSS will be used during the courses, unless otherwise stated. The Association will notify you of acceptance to the course by group e-mail. It is thus possible for other participants to read you e-mail address. 1. BEGINNER S COURSE Date: June 25 June 29, 38 hours of instruction Course Contents: The course is intended for beginners. The course will give you basics in the Vadstena bobbin lace making technique. A competent instructor will give you the necessary guidance so you can develop your own skills which will enable you to continue lace making on your own after the course. The course follows the course in the book Knyppling. It is possible to borrow a lace pillow during the course. Literature: The Swedish book Knyppling (Natur och Kultur). Qualifications: No previous skills necessary. This course is open for everyone, grown-ups as well as young adults. much you accomplish during the course, approx. SEK 500:-. Course fee: SEK 2380:- 2. BEGINNER S COURSE Date: July 2 July 6, 38 hours of instruction Please see the above description of Course 1. 3. CONTINUATION COURSE Date: June 25 June 29, 38 hours of instruction Course Contents: The course is intended for those who have completed the beginner s course and what to continue, or those who have made a break for a couple of years and will start with bobbin lace making again. You work at your own level. The course will give you basics in the Vadstena bobbin lace making technique. A competent instructor will give you the necessary guidance so you can develop your own skills which will enable you to continue lace making on your own after the course. During the course patterns from FSS are used. It is possible to borrow a lace pillow during the course. There is no mounting of bobbin laces in this course. Literature: The Swedish book Knyppling (Natur och Kultur). Qualifications: Completed beginners course. much you accomplish during the course, approx. SEK 400:-. Course fee: SEK 2380:- 4. 5. CHILDREN S COURSE IN LACE MAKING Date: June 25 June 29, from 9 am to 1 pm Course Contents: This course gives you the basic skills in Vadstena bobbin lace making. Those who already can make lace continue to develop their skills. Qualifications: This course is for those who want to begin lace making and for those who already can make lace. Age 7 years or more. Material Costs: The cost of borrowing a lace pillow, bobbins and necessary materials are included in the course fee. Number of participants: A maximum of 6. Course fee: SEK 1000:-. 6. CHILDREN S COURSE IN LACE MAKING Date: July 2 July 6, from 9 am to 1 pm Please see the above description of Course 5. 7. TÖNDER LACE MAKING Date: June 25 June 29 and/and July 2 July 6, 38 or 76 hours of instruction Course Contents: Tönder lace making with an instructor from Denmark. The laces are made in a very thin thread. Literature: Compendium included in the fee. Qualifications: Completed beginner s course as well as up-to-date and very good knowledge in lace making. much you accomplish during the course, approx. SEK 700:-. 8. BOBBIN LACE IN METAL WIRE Basic and continuation course Date: June 25 June 29, 38 hours of instruction Course Contents: You learn how to make bobbin lace with metal wire, about tools and material. We discuss the differences between lace making in metal wire and linen thread. You learn step by step the different elements in bobbin lace with metal wire. Qualifications: Up-to-date and very good skills in lace making. Literature: The Swedish book Knyppling (Natur och Kultur), Metallknyppling. To find and see structures and motifs and translate them to bobbin lace. Course Contents: The course contains working with design, how to make your own sketches and to plan the technique from them, lace making of your own motif and mounting of the lace. COURSE FOR TEACHERS IN BOBBIN LACE also new and future Date: July 2-July 6, 38 hours of instruction Course Contents: With a starting point in the syllabus for bobbin lace making by the Swedish Lace Association we discuss the planning of a course and how to maintain the technique and develop bobbin lace making in Sweden. Lectures and own lace making are included in the course. Literature: The Swedish books Knyppling (Natur och Kultur), Att dikta en spets (Warne förlag). Qualifications: You have completed the basic course in bobbin lace making according to the book Knyppling as well as some years experience in bobbin lace making. You are a bobbin lace teacher, or want to be. much you accomplish during the course, approx. SEK 400:-. Course fee: 2380:- SEK. 7

11. MOUNTING BOBBIN LACE Date: June 29-July 1, 22 hours of instruction (Note! Weekend course) Course Contents: This course teaches mounting of bobbin lace according to the standards of the Swedish Lace Association, including joining of lace, straight and bevelled corners, lace with folded corners, satin stiches on linen, inset lace with linen edge, lace on linen, lace around a circular cloth. Qualifications: Sewing skills are necessary. Literature: The Swedish book Knyppling (Natur och Kultur). Material: For this course you need to bring 1,4 meter Udd och stad alternatively 1 meter with foot sides and 0,4 meter with head side, 1 meter lace for a circular i.e. Sockerudd med spindel or 0,25 meter for a ¼ cloth as sample as well as 0,25 meter of an optional lace with two foot sides. much you accomplish during the course, approx. SEK 400:-. Course fee: 1800:- SEK Instructor: Kerstin Sandberg 12. SCANIAN PETTERSSON LACE Date: June 29-July 1, 22 hours of instruction (Note! Weekend course) Course Contents: The Pettersson laces were made during the years 1800-1839 by the family Pettersson from Österlen, Scania, southern Sweden. The characteristics of these laces are the geometrical shapes they share with Scanian free-hand lace. You will learn the basics by using a standard pricked, unmarked pattern and a working diagram. With the given shapes, it is possible for you to make your own combinations and designs. It is also possible to make corners in this technique. Re-discover this old lace, its technique and its advantages. The same technique was and still is used in province Hälsingland, northern Sweden. ADVANCED COURSE I Date: June 25 July 6, 76 hours of instruction (including Saturday morning) Course Contents: Practical bobbin lace making combined with history, mounting, drawing patterns and analysis. Course Objectives: To create an interest and enthusiasm for bobbin lace making and to preserve the cultural inheritance and development as well as stimulating creativity, versatility and an inquisitive attitude regarding bobbin lace making. Literature: The Swedish books Knyppling (Natur och Kultur) and Att dikta en spets (Warne förlag). Qualifications: Good and up-to-date knowledge of bobbin lace making. Please submit 12 cm of each of the exercise laces in the textbook Knyppling as an example of your work together with your application. much you accomplish during the course, approx. SEK 600:-. ADVANCED COURSE II Date: June 25 July 6, 76 hours of instruction (including Saturday morning) Course Contents: Making bobbin lace with finer threads, beginning with Sampler II from the book Knyppling, analysing, drawing and pricking of patterns. Lessons in basic bobbin lace techniques and lace making from other countries are included. Course Objectives: To create an interest and enthusiasm for bobbin lace making and to preserve the cultural inheritance and development, as well as stimulating creativity, versatility and an inquisitive attitude regarding bobbin lace making. You tackle advanced patterns in coarse threads, for example lace for altar cloths, plus a lace sample analysis. Lessons in the development of European lace making are included. Course Objectives: To create an interest and enthusiasm for bobbin lace making and to stimulate creativity, versatility and an inquisitive attitude regarding bobbin lace making. JEMS FROM THE LACE ARCHIVES Date: June 25 July 6, 76 hours of instruction (including Saturday morning) Aim of Course: It is our ambition that the outcome of this course will be that old laces can survive. Course Content: This course is intended for those who are interested in the origin of laces. Field trips, analysis with sample lace making, The history of the designers is included. The intention of this course is independent work in research, analysis etc. You will have instructions in the element analysis of samples, followed by technical drawing, pricking and lace making. Guest lecturers will attend. The aim of this in-depth study of the archives is to preserve and develop the Swedish pattern treasure as well as increase the understanding of the craft behind. You will compile a material that will be examined by the association. Literature: Literature in the library of the Lace Association.
