INTERMEDIATE PHOTOSHOP: FAMILY PHOTOS What is Photoshop Elements? Photoshop Elements is a streamlined version of Adobe Photoshop CC. Despite missing some more advanced features, it is a robust piece of software capable of handling many types of projects. You can buy Photoshop Elements as a one-time purchase instead of a monthly subscription like the full version.

INTRODUCTION Course Topics: Basic photo adjustments Spot Healing Brush Clone Stamp Tool Removing people Adding people Importing into Photoshop The simplest way to bring images into Photoshop is to drag and drop your photo on top of the Photoshop icon. Another way to open a file you would like to edit is to move to the File tab, click Open, and locate the file on the desktop. To start today s lesson, open Photoshop Elements and drag the file named Image 1 (or another file) onto the Photoshop icon. Once Elements is opened, click on the Expert button. Elements offers a variety of modes for different uses, but the Expert setting has the most tools available for photo editing.

ADJUSTMENTS Adjusting Levels The simplest change you can make to a photo is adjusting it s levels. Most photos, when taken, end up being a little flat looking. When we look at photo one, you can tell that the black and white tones in the photo are slightly grey. To fix this we ll open up the levels, click on the enhance tab and scroll down to adjust lighting (as shown below). Once we ve clicked Levels look at the information and you ll notice that there are three tiny arrows underneath what looks like a wave. The left arrow effects the black tones in our photo, the middle arrow adjusts mid-tones, and the right arrow adjusts white tones. To adjust this drag the right and left arrows to the very tip of the wave while watching what happens to your photo.

ADJUSTMENTS Adjusting Saturation Next we ll adjust saturation. This item is located in the same menu as levels. Saturation effects how much color is shown in our photo. Saturation works on a slider so we ll slightly add saturation to make the color of our photo pop. Adding Layers You ll notice now in the right hand corner that there are more layers. Layers are essentially different pieces of paper on top of one another. The highest layers are the most visible while layers underneath may be invisible or slightly covered. To add a new layer click on the layer tab and click add new layer. Adding text will automatically add a new layer but any other change you make should usually be put on a new layer. Using new layers allows you to experiment, erase, and undo a lot easier. Some tools we use will need to be made on our background however (more on this later).

TOOLS Healing Brush Now we ll talk about one of the most exciting tools of Photoshop, the magic Healing Brush. Using the Healing Brush erases blemishes on a photo. Using a software algorithm, the Healing Brush takes the input from the surrounding area around the brush and fills it in. This works quite well on single shade items but can cause some errors when working on detailed portions -- remember to decrease the brush size around these areas! Let s remove all the shadows from the lamppost on the left hand side of our photo. Clone Stamp Tool While the spot healing brush is great at clearing minor blemish and shadows, use the Clone Stamp Tool for larger areas. The Clone Stamp Tool allows you to select a point and then replicate that point over another spot. First we ll need to create a new layer and then mark this our clone stamp tool to sample all layers. Remember to keep working on the clone stamp layer and not our original. Next we ll need to select our sample point. This is the colors or textures that we would like to cover over other areas of our photo. To select a Sample Point hold ALT + Left Click. Then Left Click to paint over the layers beneath with the selected texture/image.

TOOLS Let s try and remove the two people standing to the right using the clone stamp tool. Remember to consistently select new points in order to make it look as good as possible Now Let s Try it! Using Family Photo 2: 1. Bring the image into Photoshop 2. Adjust the levels 3. Adjust saturation 4. Remove the logos on the family s shirt 5. Remove people from the background

TOOLS The Smart Brush Tool Now we will show you how to use the Smart Brush Tool. The Smart Brush Tool allows the user to apply a number of different effect presets, selectively, by brushing or auto selecting across the image. Once the Smart Brush Tool is selected, more options will appear in the bottom of the screen. The Smart Brush Tool has two options: regular smart brush where the tool selects the area for you,and the detail smart brush tool where the user chooses what to brush over. The detail smart brush tool works similarly to a paintbrush tool while applying the smart brush effects to the area. Using the Smart Brush Tool A popular Photoshop trick is to take a photo, like the one seen below, and change the background to black and white while leaving the subject in color. This is very easy to do using the smart brush tool.

TOOLS Once smart brush tool is selected, move on to the next menu. From there choose black and white and select desired black and white preset. Now start painting over the part of the image that will be black and white. The smart brush tool will do its best to find all of the edges and will turn whatever the user paints to black and white. Now Let s Try It!

COMBINING IMAGES Combining Images For our final lesson, we ll learn how to Photoshop images by combining two photos together. This effect can be used to add family members, celebrities, or other missing elements to your favorite photos. First we ll start by adding someone to an existing photograph. In this case, let s use the original image we started working and this additional image of Pluto in Disney World. Before you start working it s important to check the lighting of each photo. In the photos, you ll notice that there is similar strong lighting from the upper left direction. In cases where the light is not of a similar quality and direction, it is usually impossible to make the combination look convincing. The best way to have photos match, like many Hollywood shoots, is to use the same studio lighting, but we usually don t have that option!

COMBINING IMAGES First we ll need to adjust the levels, saturation, and other basic elements of our new photo in order to make a convincing match as practiced a little earlier on. Next, we we ll need to use the Lasso Tool in order to highlight the Pluto from the background. This is done more easily using the Magnetic Lasso Tool from the tool bar. Then use CTLR + C, or CTRL+X, to copy or cut Pluto from the background. Now we ll move back the original photo to paste (CTRL + V) Pluto in. Pluto will be pasted in as a new layer that we can modify or edit without changing the background.

COMBINING IMAGES Once Pluto is in the picture, we ll need to scale him to size by dragging from the corner of the layer diagonally. Zooming in, using CTRL and the + symbol, will allows us to move in closer. Once we are in to a pixel level, we can use the eraser to remove extra borders or unwanted elements. We might also move Pluto down so that his feet are obscured to better deal with differences in perspective. Now that we have him put into place we might remove part of Pluto s right hand to better integrate him with the original image. By temporarily lowering the opacity of the layer we can tell what to avoid erasing and voila! We have a rather convincing added character to our original photo.

COMBINING IMAGES Now Let s Try it! Using Family Photo 2 & Family Photo 4 add Mini Mouse to the far right corner: 1. Bring the Family Photo 4 into Photoshop 2. Adjust the levels and saturation of Family Photo 4 3. Use the lasso tool to cut and paste mini Mouse into Family Photo 2 4. Erase extras in order make the image more convincing
