Foreign Affairs, Part I It was Monday, November 19, 2012, and President Tom Turkey Jeffry kicked off Thanksgiving week with Duke Reverend Winser reminding us not to take those whom we have in our lives for granted..distinguished guests included Lincoln Stone s daughter, Amanda..Larry Johnson is assisting with the Sandpipers Home Tour, including donating cookies (which he also shared with us) (www.delusciouscookies.com). And John Akker is hosting the December 1 holiday party, featuring his lower level recently remodeled by Vinny Fazzino..We watched slides of Randy Meadors, his wife Gail Carruthers, Donn Ennis, Vinny Fazzino and seven other Rotarians joining multiple dignitaries, including the President of the Mexican Congress, in raising the Mexican and Rotary flags over Casa Hogar CBV. President Tom returned from this event with a sacred Mexican Indian artifact purchased at the border and sold to John Hugunin on condition that President Tom hang it in his living room for a month. (Archeologist Charlie Steinmetz: I feared a dig had been looted, but I see that you, President Tom, have been looted. ) Foreign Affairs, Part II Andrea Belon, a Spanish exchange student whom we are sponsoring, joined us along with James Jackman of Redondo Rotary whose family is currently hosting Andrea. (Later in the year, Maxime Mechaine, an exchange student sponsored by Redondo Rotary, will be hosted by John Van den Akker.) Introduced by Roger Cox, Andrea shared slides from Spain. She comes to us through the Rotary Club of Benahaus in Marbella, Malaga, Andalusia (the south coast of Spain). Please include Andrea in your activities let Roger Cox know.

Foreign Affairs, Part III Ingo Werk briefed us on the Zone Institute in Bogota, Colombia (he s headed to another zone institute in Squaw Valley, by the way). He shared five areas of interest: 1. Polio. Always! 2. A new RI grant-making model premieres July 1. 3. RI is instituting improved reporting of club, district and international projects. 4. To increase membership, RI is increasing the accessibility of Rotary, through, as examples, websites, e-clubs, and attendance flexibility. 5. RI is positioning Rotary as a major global player in humanitarian assistance and development. A Word From One of Our Sponsors John Russo, a nice Italian boy from Youngstown, Ohio, entered the novitiate with Christian Brothers during high school here in L.A. (he was the school barber), but gave it up and entered UCLA, where he was his fraternity social chair and ran the halftime football activities. Via ROTC he moved on to Forts Benning and Ord and made the wise decision to marry his bride of now 53 years (Karen is active in our community). They produced a son, who is in Irvine in a litigation firm and a daughter, an account manager, in LaJolla, who in turn have produced five grandchildren, one at UCSB and twins who have played for national champion soccer and hockey teams. John started with IBM in L.A. ( stored program machines ), working sales, moved on to New York, then back here for decades with Commerce Clearing House. He started up and then sold a composite rubber business (pools, playgrounds, etc.) and also started up and sold a data storage and retrieval business. He remembers the good old days when a person could create and sell a concept, but he also remembers too much time on the road (and its impact on family life). Foreign Affairs, Part IV Club member and Past District Governor Ingo Werk, a German often found with a Heineken in hand, spoke serviceable Spanish

on behalf of Rotary at the Casa Hogar fundraising, in between his participation in zone institutes on two continents, always in the company of his bride Mary (an architect, by the way) and still finding time to practice his Cajun dancing in preparation for Bayou Teche. He described Rotary International as a private sector platform unmatched in the world today. It s hard to resist saying that Ingo is himself one of those private sector platforms whose shoulders we all stand on. The Power of Words and Volunteers It was Monday, November 26, 2012, and President Tom Jeffry called upon Rick Farrell (generally a man more inclined toward harp tones than words) to remind us of the power of words like the words employed by Lee Walker, who touchingly bid farewell to his dad after their last Thanksgiving together..jan Buike solicited volunteers for the annual Joslyn Center holiday luncheon on December 13..Robin Gary solicited volunteers for the Sandpipers holiday home tour and holiday baskets as well as for Junior Achievement s Finance Park..President Tom solicited elves for the December 7 Santa Float (contact Mark Lipps)..Russ Rothner solicited volunteers for District 5280 s participation in L.A. s community effort to bring the holidays to 3000 needy families on December 8..Rich Ham solicited one couple to fill out the Rotary Guatemala tour..richard Pyle, Wendell Harter s brotherin-law, solicited support for Project Cuddle, Richard s daughter s project to rescue abandoned babies (700 and counting) And Mark Lipps solicited members to join our club s December 10 field trip to Redondo s Sealab. U.S.A! U.S.A! U.S.A! Introduced by UCLA football (and more) team dentist Ray Padilla, Adam Krikorian treated us to slides and highlights from his summer coaching the U.S.A. Women s Water Polo Team to a gold medal in the Olympics. Actually, preparation started for him in 2009, narrowing team members down from 65 to the final 13 (he cringed as he remembered cutting #14), including superstar Maggie Steffens. He confessed to his error in illegally calling a last second timeout in the semifinal match with Australia, causing a penalty

that pushed a certain win into overtime, where the women rescued him from lifelong ignominy. Adam has 14 national championships as player and coach, men and women, at UCLA, and three world championships as coach. Asked about coaching men as distinct from coaching women, he offered a bemused smile and told us women are more disciplined but more complicated (always wanting to know why ). Women in Rotary I remember in the early 80s volunteering to be our club s Vocational Director, undoubtedly thinking to myself, how difficult can this be? Apparently as easy or difficult as one wants to make it, it turns out. We have watched Kathleen Terry turn it into one of our most active avenues of service, and, judging from this last meeting, Robin Gary has upped the ante still more. They make us old members feel more than a little sheepish (no, not you, Roger Cox, my sheep stories ended with your demotion) to think that it took the United States Supreme Court to force us to let people like Kathleen and Robin join our club. (Or, as Roger would say, to force the wolves to lie down with the lambs.) (Now stop that wooly thinking, Roger, I didn t mean in the Kiwi sense.) Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett President Tom with Olympic Coach Adam Krikorian

THANK YOU 2012 SPONSORS! ROTARY CLUB OF MANHATTAN BEACH

Attendance & Make-ups Attendance is an important part of our commitment to Rotary. Our secretary, Patti Panucci, regularly files attendance reports with District 5280, and each club s attendance record is reported district-wide. Let s help Patti keep that attendance record high--report your make-up to her. (And, of course, do the make-ups in the first place!) What is a make-up? Board meetings, for one--you are always welcome even if you re not a Board member, and it s a fun evening to boot! Other clubs are also a make-up. So are many of our projects. So make Patti s job easier--when you do a make-up, tell her. If you re not sure it s a make-up--hey, tell her anyway. Local Rotary Make-Up Clubs Rotarians Participate at Weekly Meetings!
