Letter From The Prez This year's KBS Blues Challenge Solo/Duo Contest has an excellent line-up of local and regional blues performers. Acts taking part in this year's competition include "Blind-Dog" Gatewood, D.J. Rice, Doug Lamb, Gary Applegate, Lamont & the Professor (Lamont Gillispie and Bill Dean), Laurie Jessup & Cort Duggins, Randy Colvin and Tyrone Cotton & Screamin' John. The contest takes place at the Maple Inn located at 9416 Taylorsville Rd on Sunday, August 11. Our start time is 4:00 pm. We are almost halfway to our goal of raising enough funds to create the second Louisville Blues Compilation recording in the history of the KBS. Scott Mullins and the blues society produced Volume 1 back in 1990 and we thought it was time to do another one. We hope to have the finished product ready by our 25th anniversary celebration on November 16. Sponsorships are $200 each and you get your name or the name of your organization or company in the credits and a copy of the CD. If you are interested, please contact me at prez@kbsblues.org or 502/724-9971. Photo by Cheryl Cissell Notable events this month include the Hippie Reunion at Stevie Ray's on Sunday, August 4. This year's reunion will be a benefit for local bluesmen Lamont Gillispie and Byron Davies (see more info below). The show starts at 4:00 pm and will include the River City Blues Band, The Jaywalkers, The Blues & Greys, The Pranksters, Blue Meridian, Say Uncle, Palo Verde and Lauren Eid. The Kentucky State Fair will host no less than three blues bands between August 15 and August 25. They are the Stray Cat Blues Band, Little T&A and Lamont Gillispie & 100 Proof. Stevie Ray's will feature several great blues shows in August including Kelly Richey (August 2), The Beat Daddys (August 9), the 2013 International Blues Challenge Solo/Duo Contest winner Little G Weevil (August 14) and the Kilborn Alley Blues Band (August 31). The festival season keeps rolling along with the Cincy Blues Festival on August 2 and 3, the Ribberfest in Madison, IN on August 16 and 17 and the Bean Blossom Blues Fest August 22 through August 24. All three feature a mix of local, regional and national blues acts. Headliners for the Cincinnati, OH blues festival include Ana Popovic, EG Kight and Watermelon Slim & the Workers. The 12th Annual Ribberfest will have another group of talented performers including Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Rick Estrin & the Nightcats, the Cash Box Kings and Carolyn Wonderland. Louisville's own Dog House Kitchen and Dust Radio will both be at the Madison festival. The Bean Blossom Indiana festival features three days of blues highlighted by Mary Bridget Davies, Doug Deming & Dennis Gruenling and Gene Deer & Gordon Bonham. Two one-day blues festivals take place on Friday, August 9. The Capital City Blues and River Festival in Frankfort is headlined by the Lauren Mitchell Band of Sarasota, FL. The second Mary Ann Fisher Summer Concert of the year in Russellville, KY will have Tyrone Dunn & Kinfolk. And our brother blues society to the west, the River Basin Blues Society, helps sponsor the Old Damn Blues & BBQ Fest on Saturday, August 10 in Newburgh, IN. Byron Davis posted the following message on the Facebook page for Lamont Gillispie & 100 Proof on Wednesday, July 17: OK, Here is the skinny... In the last few weeks some health problems have risen. The brief of it is... Lamont was diagnosed with esophageal cancer two weeks ago and I was diagnosed with liver cancer last week. The wheels are in motion to take care of us both. We're going to fight it and we need your thoughts to be with our families. We will definitely keep every one of our friend's up to date. Again, on behalf of Lamont and myself, don't give up on us, this is a new journey. Love, Byron & Lamont Cheryl Jaggers, organizer of the annual Hippie Reunion, has decided to make Lamont and Byron the recipients of this year's benefit. KBS board member Natalie Carter has also created a Facebook FundRazr page for the guys. You can find it by going online to https://fundrazr.com/ and searching for Hippie Love for Lamont Gillispie and Byron Davies. Please show these men your love and support by coming to the benefit and sending a few bucks their way on the website. For that, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Liz Mandeville Clarksdale Blue Kitty New Music Reviews! Veteran Chicago blueswoman Liz Mandeville has created a significant recording for several reasons. One, it showcases her own tunes. Two, it is the debut of a new label, Blue Kitty. And three, several tracks on the CD are the last-ever recordings from drummer and blues harpist Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, who passed away prior to a planned follow-up studio session. It was also Smith who encouraged and helped Mandeville to create the new label. The CD is a showcase for the singer and guitarist's wit, strong vocals and confident delivery. Mandeville is also a decent guitarist in her own right, and accompanies herself quite nicely. There are other notable performances on the recording: Nick Moss - who once played in Mandeville's and Smith's bands - plays lead guitar on one track, as does tenor saxophonist Eddie Shaw. Steel and slide player Donna Herula adds some country flavor as she makes an appearance on two cuts. Overall, though, the CD is definitely blues with few exceptions - blues as only Mandeville can deliver. With influences of soul, swing, and R&B also peppered throughout the song list, the tunes weave together threads of insight into the human condition, laced with humor, and all under the atmosphere of Clarksdale, Mississippi, where Mandeville stayed to soak up the history and deep south vibes for inspiration. This is a CD worth having - and labeling it Blues. Les Reynolds James Buddy Rogers My Guitar s My Only Friend Blue Wave Records Thirty seven year old Buddy Rogers is a Canadian born guitar slinger who has played professionally since he was 15. He has toured extensively with BB King s bassist and later with BB s drummer. His influences are the three Kings (BB, Albert and Freddie), Johnny Watson, and Jimmie Vaughn. These influences are evident in these cuts. There are 10 cuts on the CD, all originals starting with the title track. The music is a mix of blues and soft rock. Rogers is an excellent guitar player but sees to it that the guitar is almost subdued in the cuts and never jumps out front of the rest of the band-there are good guitar solos but it has its place-not throughout the songs. Overall, the music is not as bluesy as it could be, and is really closer to soft rock. The CD doe has some good music on it, just not very bluesy. You should check it out at www.jamesbuddyrogers.com to listen to samples or buy the songs. Bob Brown plished slide player in the Delta style, sometimes joins him in an interesting shared slide harmonic display. Speaking of guitar, Theessink's style seems to be one of understatement: lightweight, melodic, easygoing and gentle, undergirded by his low, sometimes nearly a whisper, vocals. All the tunes are very good, but not all, as previously noted, are blues. The ones that are favor Delta and country. Overall, a good CD. Les Reynolds Hans Theessink Wishing Well Blue Groove Folk, roots and blues, or is it roots, blues and folk, or does it really matter in which order the genres are listed? Hans Theessink, with 20 albums to his credit, has firmly established himself in each of those styles, and all are evident on his latest recording, "Wishing Well." The Dutchman, now 65 years old and living in Austria, is a multiinstrumentalist specializing in stringed instruments, mostly the acoustic guitar. The 14 songs on this CD highlight his talents across traditional, original and covers of ballads (including one from Bob Dylan), Indianinspired and blues/roots music. One notable guest is David Pearlman, who plays pedal steel on several of the songs. Theessink, an accom- 6
