By Nancy Fiedler It is the season of ghosts and goblins! What fun it is to create a door banner for the season using just decorative stitches. Supplies Needed: Skyline S7 or any Janome sewing machine Satin Stitch Foot F Piping Foot Beading Foot Wide Zipper Foot E Quarter Inch Foot O AcuFeed AD Foot Janome Blue Tip Needle Janome Black Prewound Bobbin Optional: Elna Press Download B.pdf, O.pdf and Ghost.pdf Fabric and Notions Required: 1/3 yard of white cotton 1/3 yard of black and white small print 1/3 yard of backing 1/2 yard of orange for piping 1/3 yard of batting 8 yards of a 1/4 cotton cording 4 yards of black 4mm string beads Terial Magic, liquid stabilizer Jenny Haskins Web Magic; paper-backed self-adhesive fusible web Tear Away stabilizer 3/8 x 10 dowel rod 1 plastic ring Black embroidery thread Black all-purpose thread Page 1

Instructions: Note: Directions are written for the Skyline S7. Use comparable stitches for other Janome machines. Cutting and Fabric Preparation Applique 1. Cut a white cotton strip into four equal squares, approximately 11 x 12. 2. Front: Black and white small print, 10 1/2 x WOF. 3. Backing: 10 1/2 x WOF (same length as black and white print) 4. Batting: Cut to the same measurement as front and back. 5. From orange print: Cut 6 1/2 bias strips 6. Saturate white cotton squares with Terial Magic; hang to dry for approximately 20 minutes. 7. Press dry Decorative Stitch Letters: Marking Option 1: Perforated Fabric 1. Download and print B.pdf, O.pdf and Ghost.pdf 2. Pin the pattern to a cotton square. 3. Do not thread the needle, select a straight stitch and sew on the lines to perforate the fabric. Page 2

4. Repeat for each letter and ghost shape. 5. Remove the paper. Marking Option 2: Drawn Lines 1. Place the pattern under a white square. 2. Use water soluble marker and trace all of the lines. 3. Repeat for each letter and ghost shape. Filling Stitches 1. Thread the needle and bobbin and attach the Satin Stitch Foot F. 2. Select a decorative stitch and fill a defined area while keeping the rows of stitches close together. 3. Press the reverse button at the stopping point, the machine will lock off and stop sewing. Designer Tip: It is perfectly acceptable if the stitches slightly overlap the lines. 4. Select a different stitch to fill the next area. Page 3

5. Continue selecting stitches and sewing until all of the areas are filled. 6. Repeat for each letter and vary the stitches so that each letter is unique. Design Tip: Turn the second O to the back side so that the fill areas are in different positions. 7. Add any narrow satin type stitch for detailed separation lines. Stitch H17 was used on the sample. 8. Select the straight stitch and sew on the outside line to define the cutting line. Page 4

Ghost: Program eyes and mouth as follows: Eyes: Decorative Tab Decorative Mode Combine Stitch #17 L.S. *Sew an eye at each placement mark Mouth: Long Mode Combine Stitch 07 Width: 7mm; Length: 2mm L.S. *Sew a mouth at the placement mark. Page 5

Applique: 1. Follow manufacturers directions for fusing the Web Magic to the wrong side of the applique fabrics. 2. Cut out the letters and ghost. 3. Remove the paper backing and place appliques on the front. 4. Fuse in place. 5. Select Applique Stitch 6. Place Tear Away stabilizer under each applique and sew around all raw edges. 7. Remove the stabilizer. Beaded Double Piping: 1. Sew the bias strips together to form one continuous strip. 2. Attach the Piping Foot. 3. Fold the bias strip over cotton cording and place it under the groove of the foot. Sew the second row of piping. 4. Place the cotton cording next to the first row of piping and under the groove of the foot. Sew the second row of piping. Page 6

5. Attach the Beading Foot wide. 6. Select the Zig Zag Stitch - Width: 4mm; Length: 4mm 7. Place the beads in valley between the two rows of piping and under groove of foot. 8. Sew at a slow speed, guiding the beads in place for the entire length of the strip. 9. Trim the seam allowance. Construction: 1. Baste the batting to the wrong side of the front. 2. Attach the Zipper Foot. Sew the piping to the front with the right sides together. 3. Sew the backing to the front, right sides together, leaving a 4 opening to turn. 4. Clip the corners and turn them right side out. 5. Quilt the background area as desired. The sample was quilted with AcuFeed foot AD and Q11 6. Sew a sleeve to the top of the door banner and insert a dowel rod. Sew a plastic ring in the center to hang. Page 7
