Manhattan Beach Rotary Club Serving Manhattan Beach Since 1950 Club No. 751 District 5280 Chartered August 9, 1950 www.mbrotary.org DG DJ Sun President Richard introduced our governor, telling us that DJ (aka DG) Sun was born in Korea and came to Los Angeles after graduating from the University of Illinois in Carbondale and then getting an MBA at Oregon State. He has been with a commercial/industrial real estate brokerage firm for years and has held multiple RI, District, and Korea Town Club offices. He gave a very short talk, breaking all prior records for district governor brevity. He centered his talk on RI President K.R. Ravindran s words, Be A Gift To The World. He sees Rotary s mission as improving the human condition, and otherwise lets Rotary s actions speak for themselves. Education is when you read the fine print. Experience is what you get if you don t. TODAY S PROGRAM Aug 10 Committee Reports. A preview of the year to come. Pete Seeger

District Brass It was August 3, 2015, and President Richard Ham found himself surrounded by the top brass from District 5280, for this was the date of the annual District Governor formal visit to our club. Our visitors included District Governor DJ Sun (I ve always called Larry Johnson LJ the DJ in tribute to that voice and actual disc jockey history, so I ll now call Governor Sun DJ the DG ). Our governor was accompanied by DG- Elect Greg O Brien (former judge and fellow South Bay Rotarian from the Palos Verdes club), DG-Elect-Elect Cozette Vergari (Westchester Rotarian and long-time friend of this club and many of our members) and Assistant Governor John Ramey (assigned to our club, so we ll be seeing more of him). (By the way, like Paul Harris, all three members of this entourage are lawyers, and isn t that simply dandy?) Citations District Governor Sun called out a number of club members while with us. He had special thanks for President Richard Ham. He made particular mention of Larry Johnson and the largest District project this year, the World Vision Niger water/sanitation project. And he awarded District Governor citations to John Rhind, Shannon Ryan, Charlie Steinmetz, and Kathleen Terry. He also joined Herb Trachtenberg in awarding Paul Harris fellowships to Susan Adams and Shannon Ryan

(PH + 7!). (After the traditional standing ovation for our governor, we were apparently too weak to offer the traditional standing ovation for our Paul Harris fellows. But see below.) Travel Plans District Governor Sun invited us to join him in Seoul, Korea for the RI Convention May 28-June 1, 2016. We watched videos from RI and from the Korea Tourist Association enticing us to go. He told us to connect with Korea and touch the world. He is also offering a personal tour of Korea after the convention for District Rotarians who would like to see more. (Registration for his tour should be on the District website in early November.) DG (aka DJ) Sun also told us that Cozette Vergari is organizing the annual District Humanitarian Trip which will take us to Panama January 27-February 1, 2016. Club Members Our club members got in a few licks as well. Patrick Fard s thought of the day aligned perfectly with DJ Sun s talk, telling us to keep faith and never give up. Mark Burton, our City Mayor, showed off a little to our district governor, pointing out that our club membership includes Police Captain Tim Hageman, Fire Chief Bob Espinosa, Parks and Rec s Jan Buike, and School Superintendent Mike Matthews. Happy Dollars: Dick Chase noted that I swam the Pier to Pier (perennial medalist Susan Adams skipped it this year), so I in turn noted that Alex Yoffe completed the far more challenging Catalina Channel race on his SUP (stand-up paddleboard). Steve Murillo is looking forwarded to a November river cruise on the Rhine. And Ian Jackson and Bill Bloomfield paid to get us to stand up and applaud our Paul Harris Fellows.

Text When all was said and done, I could summarize this meeting in a text: DJ the DG Liked LJ the DJ. Don t we all! Yours in Rotary, Jim Hallett

RI Programs Rotary International offers a broad range of humanitarian, intercultural, and educational programs and activities designed to improve the human condition and advance the organization s ultimate goal of world understanding and peace. Nine structured programs and nine service opportunities help clubs and districts achieve their service goals in their own communities and in communities abroad, fostering fellowship and goodwill in the process. Rotary Service Above Self World Community Service has been described as the quiet revolution of hope. Isn t it time for you to: Reach out to someone who needs help. Develop a relationship with a club in another country. Become acquainted with customs and culture of a faraway place. How Well Do You Know Your Piers? The first Manhattan Beach Pier was all wood construction and built in 1902. It was destroyed in a storm in 1913. The second (and current) Manhattan Beach Pier was completed in 1920. The Roundhouse on the pier was finished in 1922 The Manhattan Beach Pier was declared a California Historical Landmark in 1995. Share The Rotary Bulletin Include your spouse!
