Volume 59, Issue 8 Est. 1949 August 2007 The Newsletter of The Leathercraft Guild Editor / Publisher Robert Ambriz *Officers* President Robert Ambriz Vice President Wayne Christensen Secretary Ellen Marie Piles Treasurer Mary Noble Copyright 2007 The Leathercraft Guild c/o Robert Ambriz 1434 S. Pine Ave. Ontario, CA 91762 The Leathercrat is published monthly. * Articles due by first Sunday of the Month It was a nice time at the fair in Costa Mesa, CA. They have made changes to the fair since our last demos there in 2005. More volunteers than they gave us space for made it tough for some to get a chance to work at the table. The fair has downsized the booths for Craftspeople and the amount of groups there. We set-up some display items but did not have enough space for all that I loaded up my car with. Some members and Guest from the SCLG did bring their projects to work on in the booth. We welcomed members of the South Coast Leather Guild which participated with us this year. It was a nice chance to meet others whom share the same interest, Leathercraft. I m so thankful for those whom helped at our Leathercraft Guild booth at the 2007 Orange County Fair! Thank You Jerry, Mary, Mark, Sandi, Wayne, John and Ron! Thanks to Nancy, Rosie, Frank, and all the others from their new guild whom helped at our booth. The guilds were allowed to have some flyers about where they meet. We also let the fair visitors have free information on the Leather Supply vendors and classes in the surrounding areas. Also, Leathercrafters received complementary copies of the Leather Crafters & Saddlers Journal. There were not many Leather Entries this year but I was happy to see some by children also in the youth exhibits building. They are the Leatherworkers of the future! Some nice work done by teens was entered. On Sunday afternoon when I arrived, I was happy to see our guild members were allowed to use space which was vacated after Saturday. This made my day because now there was working space for more and we had both sides of a doorway to the Home & Hobbies Bldg. 14. I first demonstrated there with our guild back in 1980. This could be our last year but maybe the new guild in the area will take over down there. Well see in 2008 if they make space for Leather at the fair. See the 2007 photo collage! Hello to all on behalf of The Leathercraft Guild! Well here is another issue of our guild newsletter in hopes that it informs you of our guild activities. This month we are meeting in Reseda on the 19th which is this Sunday. Our last guild meeting video watched was about Leather Design Layout which was a great subject. Our August workshop will be at the SBTP meeting location. It will again be hosted by Wayne, our Vice President. The participants will gain some design layout practice time after our business meeting is over. The International Federation of Leather Guilds show being hosted by the Lone Star Leather Crafters is getting closer. Still excited about attending a Federation Show this year and having a guild display to represent our guild. Our table will show leatherwork of our past and present members. We have current IFoLG Show information for you by request via mail or at the meeting. Some more information will be given in next months issue of The Leathercrat. I still need more time to prepare since my job has kept me too busy lately. We will help honor The Legends In Leathercraft theme since some have roots in The Leathercraft Guild. I do hope some of you whom reside locally will make the effort to attend our meeting! We will have a guild meeting raffle with some great Leatherworking items and tools on the table. Our demo workshop will be on Pattern layout so please bring Mechanical Pencils and a circle template if you can. We watched a video at last months meeting on this subject. It was starring a very early member of the Leathercraft Guild, Chuck Smith. If you were not there, don t worry you will still gain knowledge at the workshop. Also items will be on display for an upcoming Classic Leather Art Raffle! It was sad to hear that some talented Leather craftsman have passed on. My sympathy to the families of Mr. Don King, August 19, 1923 - July 28, 2007. The Founder of King's Saddlery and creator of the Sheridan-style saddle. Darwin E. Ohlerking 77, of Eagle Grove, Iowa, he died Saturday morning August 4, 2007. He did rustic building structure pictures in Leather. Look for Doodle Pages created by Mr. Ohlerking. Last month we had drawn a ticket from our last guild raffle of patterns for a winner of a Midas Tool by the old Kelly Tool Co. which used to be in New Zealand. MEETING Dates! Our July meeting was on July 15th at our meeting room in Rosemead, CA This month the meeting is August 19, 2007 at Standing Bears Bring circle templates and mechanical pencils for our design layout practice session. Future Date is: September 16, 2007 will be at Rosemead October date will be changed due to the I. F. o L. G. show. Oct. 14th if possible. Mark your calendar! Visitors are welcome to attend and show some of their leatherwork. Our meeting locations in both Reseda and Rosemead have enough room for more interested parties. For more information on meeting dates and locations contact: Robert Ambriz at 909-983-9544 Email: leatherguild@email.com or contact Standing Bear's Trading Post 818-342-9120 Email - inquiry@sbearstradingpost.com www.theleathercraftguild.com WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!!! Are you ready for this show, make some entries, add to our display! Member guilds of the International Federation of Leather Guilds get together for the annual show hosted this year in Fort Worth, TX. They were planning to have two special receptions held. One on Friday at Tandy Leather Factory and at Hide Crafters Leather Company. The host guild will have a good old fashion all you can eat Texas Bar-B-Q on Saturday. You can get show updates on-line from the Lone Star Leathercrafters and even the IILG.org web site has the info. to share. An updated show packet version with class / workshop information is available for our members and guests. If you are a duel member of two guilds, enter items for both Leatherworking groups. The International Internet Leathecrafters Guild and Leather Artisan Guild of CA are member guilds too. I hope to make a lasting leather impression with our guild history in Texas. If you have something to share there and can t go, just bring it to a meeting. Our July meeting included a video on some pattern layout techniques. A preview of a DVD slide show which represents our guild history in photos of people and Leatherwork was viewed on my old laptop computer. This is still under construction but I hope to complete it before the IFoLG show. Last month we obtained some items for our raffle table. Some discontinued tools by Kelly Tool Co. will be the main attraction at our future raffles. These were shared at the July meeting. A generous member had donated some tools and findings to raffle so another person who needs them can win. Nice chance to win some great stuff! Help support our guild, buy some tickets for $2 ea. or 3 for $5.00. At the meeting a large carved picture by our Past President, Roz Kaohn was displayed. It will hopefully find a place to ride the road to Texas for our display table. The Orange County Fair passes were distributed at the meeting and all members present were in attendance at our fair booth this year. We also discussed the possibility of vintage collector type items being raffled by our guild as a fundraiser and extend the opportunity to others outside our leather guild. With the help of a out of town member, this was a subject that excited the members to have a chance to win some priceless works of leather art. The details will be worked out this month and presented in the next issue and via email to others in the Leathercrafters World. We had to finalize our plans for set-up and volunteers for the next weekend when our booth would take place. I told of my plans for the stage demonstration scheduled for Saturday at the fair. A extra drawing from the last raffle tickets purchased was awarded the first of the Midas saddle stamps. The lucky winner is Ellen Marie Piles! She gets to pick from a group of unique designs. So will the future winners as the tools slowly are raffled out to members no matter where they live. The meeting was adjourned with myself feeling good about what our guild was planning for the benefit of our members in good standings.

The Southern California Fair in Riverside County is the same month as the Federation Show, it is the week before. We now have entry info. for that fair also. They have asked if we would still be interested in doing a demo there. If could maybe just be a one day event because we all live a far distance from the fairgrounds. If anyone is interested please let it be known, and maybe I can contact them to ask if they would allow that. Not much time to plan but to me it s worth looking into. I m aware that Perris if further than we have gone in recent years. I just wanted to mention it just in case some who can t attend the meetings have any interest. This is the year for Leather there, they have helped us by adding all new categories. So glad they let us submit them. Last year two guilds members had entered so they had a wonderful display of Leathercraft. With the new Handcrafts divisions for both Professional and Amateur, it opens a whole new door for us. The Leather Artisan Guild of California members will most likely have some entries there again. They are closer and plus that is where I first heard of this fair. A fellow member whom lives there told us about it at a meeting. So we got together and car-pooled out to deliver all our entries. Thanks Tim! for sharing the information, it is a nice fair to visit! Items can be taken in by others for you if you cannot deliver them. You will need your claim check to pick them up. Help keep the new Class numbers of entries so they don t remove them soon. When you enter in more than once class, you are helping to show a larger number of display items. When fairs have a good number of entries in a Division, it seem they tend to display them near each other. When only a few enter, I have seen all entries are spread throughout the building. Please enter and you could be helping promote our craft by letting people see Leather items at the fair. 18700 Lake Perris Dr. Perris, CA 92571 951-657-4221 951-657-5412 FAX info@socalfair.com
