19-5903; Rev 0; 6/11 General Description The family of supervisory circuits monitors voltages from +1.1V to +5V using a factory-set reset threshold. The MAX16084/MAX16085/MAX16086 offer a manual reset (MR) input while the MAX16087/ MAX16088/MAX16089 offer a reset input (IN). The IN input allows for monitoring of an additional voltage. The combination of these features significantly improves system reliability and accuracy when compared to separate ICs or discrete components. The MAX16081/MAX16084/MAX16087 feature a pushpull, active-low reset output. The MAX16082/MAX16085/ MAX16088 feature a push-pull active-high reset output. The MAX16083/MAX16086/MAX16089 feature an open-drain active-low reset output. The reset output asserts and remains asserted for the reset timeout period after the monitored voltage exceeds its threshold. All devices are offered with reset timeout periods ranging from 30Fs to 1.8s. The MAX16081/MAX16082/MAX16083 are available in 3-pin SC70 and SOT23 packages. The MAX16084 MAX16089 are available in 4-pin SC70 and SOT23 packages. All devices are fully specified over the military -55NC to +125NC temperature range. V REF REF MAX16081 MAX16082 MAX16083 TIMEOUT PERIOD OUTPUT DRIVER () Detailed Description The family of supervisory circuits monitors voltages from 1.1V to 5.0V. The MAX16084/ MAX16085/MAX16086 offers a manual reset (MR) input while the MAX16087/MAX16088/MAX16089 offers a reset input (IN). The IN input allows for monitoring of an additional voltage that can be as low as 0.4V. The MAX16081/MAX16084/MAX16087 feature a pushpull, active-low reset output. The MAX16082/MAX16085/ MAX16088 feature a push-pull active-high reset output. The MAX16083/MAX16086/MAX16089 feature an opendrain, active-low reset output. The reset output asserts and remains asserted for the reset timeout period after the monitored voltage exceeds its threshold. All devices are offered with reset timeout periods ranging from 30Fs to 1.8s. Supply and Monitored Input (VCC) The operate with a VCC supply voltage from 1.0V to 5.5V. VCC has a rising threshold of VTH + VHYST and a falling threshold of VTH. When VCC rises above VTH + VHYST and MR is high (MAX16084/ MAX16085/MAX16086) or IN is above its threshold (MAX16087/MAX16088/MAX16089), goes high ( goes low) after the reset timeout period (trp). See the timing diagram in Figure 1. When VCC falls below VTH, goes low ( goes high) after a fixed delay (trd). Manual Reset Input (MR) (MAX16084/MAX16085/MAX16086) Many µp-based products require manual reset capability, allowing the operator, a test technician, or external logic V REF MAX16084 MAX16085 MAX16086 REF MR TIMEOUT PERIOD OUTPUT DRIVER () Functional Diagrams MAX16087 MAX16088 MAX16089 V REF IN circuit to initiate a reset. A logic-low on MR asserts reset. Reset remains asserted while MR is low, and for the reset active timeout period (trp) or delay (ton) after MR returns high. This input has an internal 50kI pullup resistor, so it can be left unconnected if it is not used. MR can be driven with TTL or CMOS logic levels, or with open-drain/collector outputs. For manual operation connect a normally open momentary switch from MR to ; external debouncing circuitry is not required. If MR is driven from long cables or if the device is used in a noisy environment, connect a 0.1FF capacitor from MR to ground to provide additional noise immunity. Dual-Voltage Monitoring (IN) (MAX16087/MAX16088/MAX16089) The MAX16087/MAX16088/MAX16089 monitor both the VCC voltage and the IN voltage (see Figure 2). Reset asserts when either of the voltages falls below its respective threshold voltage and remains asserted while either is below its threshold, and for the reset timeout period (trp) after both voltages exceed their respective thresholds. IN is a high-impedance comparator input with a 0.4V threshold to monitor a second supply voltage. To establish an externally controlled threshold voltage, VMON_TH, connect a resistive divider network from VMON_TH to IN to. The monitored voltage reset threshold is: VMON_TH = VTHRST x ((R1 + R2)/ R2), where VTHRST = 0.4V (typ). Low-leakage current at IN allows the use of large-valued resistors, resulting in reduced power consumption of the system. REF V REF TIMEOUT PERIOD OUTPUT DRIVER () 9

Applications Information Interfacing to µp with Bidirectional Reset Pins Since on the MAX16083/MAX16086/MAX16089 is open-drain, these devices interface easily with FPs that have bidirectional reset pins. Connecting the device s output directly to the FP s input with a single pullup resistor allows either device to assert reset (Figure 3). Negative-Going VCC Transients ESD Protection The family of devices is relatively immune to short-duration, negative-going VCC transients (glitches). The Typical Operating Characteristics show the Maximum Transient Duration vs. Reset Threshold Overdrive graph, which indicates the typical transient pulse width and amplitude required to trigger a reset. The reset threshold overdrive specifies how far the pulse falls below the actual reset threshold, and the maximum transient duration specifies the width of the pulse as it crosses the reset threshold. If a pulse occurs in the region above the curve, a reset triggers. If a pulse occurs in the region below the curve, a reset does not trigger. Table 1.
