4) Read the text and choose the correct answers: (Each 0.4 Total 2.4) SOAPS AND SOCIETY. Soap operas are watched by billions of people, but are they high-quality entertainment or just TV trash? At this moment, millions of TVs are being switched on around the world, so that people can watch their favorite soaps. In the world of soaps, anything can happen. People s lives are more exciting, more dangerous, and definitely more outrageous! Maristela Duarte, 22, says, I never miss my favorite soaps. I m addicted! And I love discussing the latest episodes with my friends. But her brother Flavio, 16, thinks soaps are boring. I can t understand why soaps are so popular. The storylines are ridiculous people are always being killed in car crashes. I think soaps are only produced to fill the TV schedules. However, recently there has been a move away from the classic, unrealistic soap format. One example is City of Men, by the directors of the acclaimed Brazilian movie, City of God. This highly realistic TV series follows the lives of two young friends living in a shanty town in Rio de Janeiro, struggling to fulfill their dreams. Life in Rio s favelas is portrayed accurately in this soap, which proves that real life can still be popular with audiences. Another interesting break from soap opera tradition is Ugly Betty, a popular series that was first shown in Colombiaa. Betty, a clever unattractive young woman, wants to build a career in the fashion industry. But appearance is supremely important in this superficial world, so she encounters many difficulties. However, thanks to her intelligence and kind personality, she succeeds in the end. Ugly Betty s positive message was found to be a refreshing change from classic soaps, where every character has to be beautiful. It was copied by many other countries and won a lot of awards around the world. Today, many soaps deal with social issues and can even have a positive impact on our attitudes. In Macedonia, south-east Europe, a soap was written about young people from three different ethnic backgrounds. It told how the teenagers overcame strong cultural prejudices to become good friends. Before the soap was broadcast, only 30% of Macedonian teenagers said they would make friends with someone from a different ethnic background. But while the soap was being shown, the figure doubled to 60%. As Maristela says, Some soap operas are good, and others are really bad. If viewers are both entertained and educated by a soap, then it s a good one! 1) The author thinks that.. a) soaps are ridiculous. b) only women enjoy soap. c) good soaps try to do more just entertain. d) soaps shouldn t try to do more than just entertain. e) people who watch soaps are stupid. 2) The characters in classic soaps. a) lead ordinary lives. b) aren t like real people. c) are real people. d)are unattractive. e) are dangerous. 3) Maristela. a) watches soaps with her brother. b) often forgets to watch her favorite soap. c) doesn t have a favorite soap. d) likes talking about soaps.

e) likes arguing about soaps. 4) Flavio.. a) doesn t have Maristela s opinion of soaps. b) wants to find out what will happen in his favorite soap. c) finds soaps difficult to understand. d) is too busy to watch soaps. e) thinks soaps are very realistic. 5) City of Men and Ugly Betty. a) cause many social problems. b) don t deal with serious issues. c) aren t as popular as classic soaps. d) are different from classic soaps. e) are more unrealistic than classic soaps. 6) The Macedonian soap. a) was watched by 60% of Macedonian teens. b) focused on friendships among three groups. c) was set in the fashion industry. d) taught people about Macedonian culture. e) reinforced ethnic stereotypes and prejudices.
