STEM in Wenatchee Where we are and where culd we be... What is STEM? STEM stands fr Science Technlgy Engineering and Math STEM makes science, technlgy, engineering and math relevant fr students. By engaging in hands-n, real-wrld prjects, students begin t understand hw the skills they are learning in the classrm can be applied in everyday life. This apprach is called activities-based, prject-based challenge-based, and prblem-based learning. Why STEM? Cmmn Cre Standards- with cmmn cre standards cming in the near future nw is an ideal time t lk at new curriculum. Page 6 f 12

Middle Schl science teachers cncerns ver gaps in curriculum and lack f alignment Natinal and State STEM initiatives Why STEM? Wenatchee Learns Feedback Paul Allen Fundatin Grant Data Driving the Why... Washingtn state is a natinal leader in STEM: we rank first in the cncentratin f STEM jbs, first in the creatin f sftware cmpanies, and secnd in the New Ecnmy index fr innvatin and entrepreneurship. A 2011 Gergetwn University study fund that ur state s STEM ecnmy wuld nly grw strnger. By 2018, we will see a 24 percent increase in STEM jbs, which is 7 pints abve the natinal average. 94 percent f these jbs will require sme pst-secndary educatin. In the next five years, prjectins estimate that Washingtn will have at least 5,000 STEM jbs that g unfilled because we lack qualified candidates. While Washingtn ranks furth in the cuntry in technlgybased crpratins, we fall t 46 th when it cmes t participatin in science and engineering graduate prgrams. Nearly ne-quarter f the prjected jb penings statewide thrugh 2012 that require a bachelr s degree will be in the STEM fields f cmputer science, engineering, and life sciences. The grwing skill-pprtunity mismatch has rts in ur educatin system where almst half f elementary schl kids receive tw hurs r less f science instructin a week. Hw t d STEM? The Wenatchee Schl District intends t pursue a K-12 STEM initiative. Nw the fllwing questins need t be answered: Where des it fit? Hw des it fit? Hw des it wrk? What has been dne... We have met with a grup f math, science, CTE, and technlgy teachers frm K-12 t begin this same discussin and begin preliminary wrk. What are ur next steps? Assemble a cmmittee f interested staff t start the wrk in planning ur initiative wrk within the area f STEM.
