The exhibition concentrates o n work done in o n e country, within a period o f thirty y e a r s, b y artists whose w o r k s can be considered, in a broad sense, stylistically similar. W h i l e the word "expressionism" c a n be used to describe the work of a n y artist w h o rejects the imitation o f t h e outer world of a p p e a r a n c e s, it is usually e m ployed to describe the work of specific artists w h o lived in Germany during the first three d e c a d e s o f the 20th century. "In the present exhibition, 'Expressionism' refers to free a n d intuitive exaggeration o f ordinary forms and colors of nature in order to achieve and heighten a n e m o t i o n a l, a s well a s aesthetic effect," explains William S. L i e b e r m a n, Director, Department o f D r a w i n g s, w h o selected the exhibition. "The i n - dividual attitudes o f so many o f t h e artists w h o worked in Germany were fevered b y p a s s i o n, alternately exhaltation and despair." Included in the exhibition are w o r k s b y Kubin and Schmithals, precursors of surrealism a n d abstract a r t respectively, and works b y t h e three artists w h o formed the first German Expressionist Rottluff. group, Die Brucke: K i r c h n e r, H e c k e l, and Schmidt- Also represented is another famous Expressionist g r o u p, the Blaue R e i t e r, whose m e m b e r s included the Russians Kandinsky and Jawlensky, the Swiss K l e e, and the American Feininger. Both groups were dissolved with the o n s e t o f the First World W a r, a n d two of the artists represented in the exhibition, Macke and M a r c, were killed in a c t i o n. Other artists whose work is included are Corinth, R o h l f s, N o l d e, O e l z e, and K o k o s c h k a. Although smaller than the Museum's previous drawing show Seurat to M a t i s s e : (more)
