1 Manuscripts & Folklife Archives Special Collections Library Department of Library Special Collections Western Kentucky Library Bowling Green, KY Descriptive Inventory SUMPTER, Irene Malone (Moss), 1902-1996 13 boxes. 76 folders. 1357 items. 1779-1996. Originals, photos, slides, negatives. 1982.111.1 & 2000.72.1 BIOGRAPHY Irene Malone Moss (1902-1996), was born in Warren County, Kentucky, to physician Morton M. Moss (1867-1939) and his wife, Maybelle Andrew Moss (1870-1948). Moss attended Bowling Green, Kentucky public schools, Southern College in Petersburg, Virginia, and received her A.B. degree from Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, Kentucky. On September 16, 1927, Irene married Ward Cullin Sumpter (1903-1977), also a native of Bowling Green. They were the parents of a daughter, Reta Moss, born in 1931. Ward was a chemistry professor at Western Kentucky for many years, retiring from that position in 1965. Irene s interests included history, genealogy, historical landmarks, and antiques of the local area. Her many hours and years of research, with the assistance of her husband, culminated in the publications, Our Heritage [:] An Album of Early Warren County [,] Kentucky Land Marks, and Medical Doctors of Bowling Green and Warren County, 1796-1985. The Sumpters also collaborated on an extensive genealogical project entitled Our Daughter s Ancestry. After retirement, the Sumpters moved to Winter Park, Florida, to be near their daughter and her family. Following their respective deaths, each was interred in Bowling Green's Fairview Cemetery. COLLECTION The collection revolves around the Sumpters genealogical and historical research with a typed copy of their 1953 unpublished genealogical compilation Our Daughter s Ancestry ; typescript, carbon copy, photos and negatives for Irene s 1976 book Our Heritage [:] An Album of Early Warren County [,] Kentucky Landmarks; and research materials for her 1985 book Medical Doctors of Bowling Green and Warren County, 1976-1985. Included also are Irene s scripts and slides for a presentation that she gave on Warren County houses; Hobson House Association papers of which Irene was a member; and data that Ward gathered about Bowling Green s founder Robert Moore.
